Thank you, this was extremely informative. I've hunted out all the public places in my area and will be moving on to private property and wasn't sure of what to say.

I've been metal detecting for over 5 years now. Just this year I started knocking doors, I have realized the best spots are older homes. I usually just say a little about my self and what I do, and than I say what I am going to do and that I will make it look like no one was ever there. Pretty much every time they say yes. You have some very valid points here!

Well done video! This is your classic "knock & talk" strategy, keep it simple and get'er done! The 10 recordings are the best part.

Very informative video for people like myself who are new to "door knocking." Thanks for posting. Another thing that I have seen suggested is to not only show the owner the coins that you find, as you have mentioned, but to offer to pay for them. Carry a coin price guide with you just in case you happen to encounter a "what's in it for me" kind of person. This way maybe they are less likely to feel that they are being taken advantage of. I have an abundance of older homes in my area and when I drive by them I swear I can hear the coins calling out to me. I just have to get my nerve up and take your advice. Wish me luck. I really appreciate the time you put into this. I can't thank-you enough. I like how you kept it incredibly simple and got right to the point. Seriously, this is what I needed. I have exhausted the land I am able to hunt. I asked one neighbor knowing that they had just sold the land to a developer. He was apprehensive at first but then his wife said "who cares if he digs a million holes, they are leveling this place in a few days." Which I saw instantly change his mind. He then walked around with me to show me the hot spots. Nothing but clad, trash and experience. I hit that place hard and dug almost every target. My whites is a toy compared to what you and JD are swinging but pretty reliable. If everything goes according to plan I will have an AT pro soon. Maybe even a camera worthy of shooting some stuff for KZread. IDK I am third shift and calm my detecting fever by watching videos. You guys are some of the very best on here.

I have been doing this door knocking for years now with very good results. This is a good video for people Rusty who want to do this. I myself do it around South Texas and I have a good YES percentage. Your right, you must look presentable when knocking. I first give them my business card and then go with my introduction as why I am there. I have copied on here a form I use if the property owner gives you permission or is worried about you getting hurt. I came up with this form from a detector on another detecting forum site. I use it a lot due to the hunting I do in South Texas, snakes, old shacks, etc. and other creatures that can harm you. Hope this help's you guys out. GOOD LUCK SCANNING THAT COIL TO THE SOIL!! I don't normally tell people what I'm looking for. If people know your looking for valuables instead of junk then they are likely to say no. Because they want the valuables too... I don't generally mention what I'm looking for unless they ask. They love when I surprise them with a find for them to keep though. Just something to think about. Great video, loved the response you got !! Keep @ it and HH !!

I like your video. This is the same approach I have been using myself. I've probably door knocked 8 or 10 times so far and was granted permission all but once. I don't find it easy to ask by any means and I am still as nervous as hell doing it. I just repeat the mantra "Nothing ventured nothing gained, nothing ventured nothing gained" all the way up to the door. After watching this I will be knocking a lot more! Looking forwards to seeing the rest of your videos!

At 4:00, I usually switch steps 2 & 3. I'll mention "thru my research I found that an old house/school used to stand on your property from 1874". This tends to peek their interest before telling them what my plans are. Most people don't know the history of their property before their house was built in 1979 lol. Then I tell them what my hobby is and what I'm interested in recovering. Just another angle on yours. Thanks for the tips. Please sub me :) Working on getting more vids up.

Great video, and im sure I will be sharing it to one of the forums I use on a regular basis! The main issue we have here is the private areas are farms, have long gated driveways. We try to call or catch the owners on the front of their property, it makes it a bit trickier.

Awesome & very informative video for the timid and shy people. I don't mind knocking on doors myself because of dealing with people on an everyday basis for work. The best way to handle permissions is like jumping into a cold pool. You can ease your way in and freeze one inch at a time and probably back out before you ever get more than a foot in. The way I like to do it is just run full force screaming and dive right in, then get a burst of adrenaline =) For permissions just drive until you see a medium size house, nothing too big and fancy or intimidating. Park and walk up to the door. Just don't think about it and do it. And if it's a no just do it again. Eventually you'll get some yeses and it will build your confidence which will lead to even more yeses. GL and HH!

I just use my night vision goggles and headphones during the hours of 1am-4am m-f and 2:30am-6am Sat and Sundays. Nobody every complains. Sometimes I take those Gnome garden figures when I leave and stick them in the ground pointy hat first.

Are you digging with a small hand trowel or do you dig with a metal detecting shovel?

Just got a Garrett 350, It only arrived a couple of days ago.I am a newbee, have never used a metal detector before Seems as though I am a late starter(70) yrs. old..I really liked your Vid. The only way you can fail horribly is if you don't go =) It's been a while since I've knocked doors so even I feel nervous about doing it but once you start in you'll lose the fear. The best thing is to not think about it and just pick an area, park the car and go. GL and let us know how it goes cause now we'll be looking for a follow up and you can't back out =)

Thanks for sharing =) Farms can be tricky if no one lives there. If I see a potential spot that's out in the country I start knocking the doors of neighbors across and to the sides of it. Usually someone will know who the owner is and maybe even know where they live. GL and HH!

Very interesting, I have a naive question. Do people every ask to see what you've found and then want the items? I'm assuming if you find a watch/ring then they might want it back. Or do you have a code of what is kept vs. asking the homeowner if this is theirs? I think you answer this around the 24 minute mark but was curious for any elaboration. Thanks for posting!

Yep those older homes can give up a lot of goodies, especially if they haven't been hit hard before. Thanks for commenting and HH =)

When you finish the yard, do you show the owners what you found or just get in your car and leave?

If the land owner has lost a ring there they would likely tell you if they know you're going to detect the yard. I'm a coinshooter so I don't dig many lower signals. When people ask what I've found they are usually shy about it. My response is always "nothing really valuable" and I keep detecting. If you're going to dig low signals I would recommend asking them beforehand right after they give you permission. Something like "have you lost any rings in the yard? What'd it look like?"

this is great. i detect with my dad, and i'm almost 15, and he's always scared someone will get mad at us and pull a gun or something.

Have you ever encountered or accidentally damaged a buried cable (TV, phone, etc.) in a yard while you were digging? Is this a concern?

Here is what you said on Friendly Metal Detecting Forum-- "haha yesterday I hunted a house and this lady started following me around right from the get go. I got a good high tone, made a mental note of it, and passed it up. Then I intentionally dug trash for the next 3-4 digs. She lost interest and went back inside. I went back to the high tone and it was a clad quarter lol If it would have been silver and she saw me dig it that wouldn't be good"--Cutaplug. Doesn't sound to me like you are the kind of person that should be knocking on doors and selling videos on how to be represent the hobby.

Hi Cutaplug! Great video, I'm new to metal detecting and haven't knocked any doors yet, but I noticed you haven't mentioned you're going to dig up their lawn yada yada (I'll fill in my holes u won't even know I was here...etc). Are we to assume when we say I metal detect as a hobby etc That they already know you're going to dig up their lawn? Just wondering if I should put that in my spiel if needed. Thanks I subbed you⚒🇨🇦

I just assume people know what metal detecting is and that they understand that I will be digging targets. I only explain that I cut a small plug and you can't even tell I was there if they ask me. GL and HH =)

I personally would just go and not worry about it. I would think it would be similar to sidewalk hunting and as long as it's not protected land or something I can't imagine why you would have a problem. Then again it's your #@$ so you might check the law if you want lol

I know it sounds cliche but the best method to get over the jitters is just go do it. When I don't door knock for a while I get nervous too but after a few doors it's all good.

Good advice. I manage to overcome it. For me, I only stop at really great spots after research. So I already have a lot invested in it by the time I knock.

I think it more depends on the yard and the people who live there. Most people who live in the country aren't as picky about their yards so they might be more likely to let you detect. If you go to a yard that is sodded and super well kept you'll start to get funny looks and most of those places are in the city. When I get invited in for coffee it's usually by the country folk =)

Ya sometimes you can give them a little nudge to say yes and it works. It throws a lot of people off when you ask so they don't know what to say lol. There's even been times when I thought for sure it was a no because they say "I have to talk to my husband first" or whatever. Then I follow up a few days later and get a yes. Last one was a huge old house and found several barber dimes and some jewelry in one day...

Rusty, I have about a 90% yes rate now days but I've been doing it for eight years now. And yes you do need a "A" personality ask someone to dig in there yard. Sometimes I'll till them, I'll be back in late fall or frost out spring to hunt so it wont be hard on the sawed. Because if you screw up one yard it will get around. I had one owner say you can MD the whole yard but you just can't dig. But when it comes to finds, a piece of silver once and awhile to a land owner has always came back 10 fold to me. For example one 1900S XF Barber Half a 200 dollar coin, that I gave back to the land owner landed me 16 seated coins and one territorial token that I sold for a lot $$$$$

90% yes rate is awesome and even someone just starting out should get at least 50% I think. I never give my finds away but a 16x return on investment sounds like a good deal to me =)

Congrats on the Indian and Large Cent! My first Barber quarter ever was found between the sidewalk and the street so it's a great place to hunt. Whenever I hear myself on recording it sounds goofy but If I can get some Yeses then who cares =)

And yeah, that first lady that turned you down. Sounded like if you offered her all the relics you found she probably would have said yes.

"Hard no" = we have people chained up in the basement and don't want you to hear them screaming.

what i hate is when u get up the ballz to go ask and then they are not home lol. Great video i'm pumped to go knocking now. idk why its so scary going knocking but it is lol and i knock all the time cause im a pizza delivery driver.

LOL I used to disconnect cable when people didn't pay their bill and I would have to knock the door to try to get a payment or take their equipment. Would get yelled at and cussed at and one guy even threatened to pull my ladder out from under me. I told him you better hope fall kills me buddy. But I never got shot at doing that so I doubt I'll get shot at knocking doors for metal detecting =)

Do the owners ever say "Yeah, whatever you find is mine because it's on my property." How does that work, or how do you respond to that?

+Bill Browne I usually come back with "Most of the stuff I find is only worth maybe a dollar or two so I keep it but if I find something worth a million or more I'll split it with you is that OK?" This usually does the trick. If not I'll just move on to the next house.

Ya sucks when no one is home and it looks like a great spot. Maybe you could start asking all your deliveries and you might have 100 houses lined up by the end of the day =)

Would it be ok to try and sell them a vacuum cleaner as long as I am there already?

+Kirk Johnson Well I can tell you from experience you will have a much higher chance of digging in their yard than selling them a vacuum cleaner. I tried to sell kirbies when I was younger and after two weeks of trying REALLY hard to sell one I didn't sell a single one. So I'm not that good of a salesman and still get a very high yes rate for metal detecting so I think anyone can do it =) Or maybe I just didn't believe the vacuum was worth $1,500 and that's why I couldn't sell any lol.

hahaha Ok, I'll stick to asking for detecting. I'm not surprised you had trouble selling kirbies. I tried to sell steel entry doors door to door. It was brutal. I didn't sell a single one either. Asking for detecting permission will be a refreshing NEW door to door experience for me I think. I'm inspired by this great video and your feedback too. Thanks

I usually just get in the car and leave. If it's a really good yard then I'll follow up with them and maybe show them a few finds and see if I can return the next day or something. I usually don't show them silver coins cause then they might think I'm getting rich off of them. Most of the time I just show them junk and clad change and sometimes wheaties. If they think you're excited about the junk finds they'll not suspect you're cashing in on their yard lol.

Great video thank you!! Curious if you ever asked home owners in a "Historic" downtown area? I would think you would get more "Yes" responses if you asked for the strips near the road and sidewalk.

I'm not sure property owners in California would give permission. Folks in the east are much more giving.

Ya knocking doors is pretty dangerous business =) You could get a bullet proof vest and some body gear but people might be scared of you then and pull a gun =) I haven't had a gun pulled yet. Give it a try sometime and you'll see it's not that bad. Next big ol house you see say "hey dad that looks like a good place. Pull over I'm gonna go knock the door" GL!

Here is a tip, if you give them a card with your name, even if they turn you down then you can say, call me if you lose something metal or in the case of the woman that turned you down because her husband was thinking of getting into MD, then you can say have your husband call me and I can give him some advise as to what to get in a detector. That might get you permission from him or his friends.

I was told once "I already gave someone else permission to hunt" not sure if that was a nice way to say No. I have never seen anyone detecting in this yard and I drive by it every day on my way to work

Rusty, You have given me one more arrow in my quiver when talking to my grandkids about getting tattoos or piercings. I will assume from what I heard here that you (and your dad) are presentable when you approach these homeowners. I'm betting you would get a complete different attitude from those you asked if you had barbed wire tattooed around your neck and a ring in your nose. If everybody in the world would relearn to talk to each other like you do here we would all be better off. I hope you find some really good stuff, you deserve a excellent find.-- John

Thanks John! I guess it just depends on the homeowner. If they have barbed wire tattoos then you might have a better chance if you put in some fake piercings and one of those stick on tats to get permission =) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder lol
