Metal Detecting - How to clean Civil War era buttons.
Found another Civil War button! Thought I'd do a demo on how I clean these buttons. Feel free to comment with tips on how you clean your old buttons and coins.

This weekend we traveled to Belleau, France from where I'm stationed in Germany for the Battle of Belleau Wood Ceremony. We took a $40 metal detector to give my kids something to do while I worked and when I met up with them later in the day, they had found 4 rounds (primer and projectile in tact) along with a U.S. uniform button. What a great investment and your video helped me with the cleaning process. From a very happy U.S. Marine and his young kids that loved the "hunt"... thanks!
Cool - most folks don’t realize how much time and effort it takes to properly clean and preserve… Using petroleum jelly as a sealer sounds like a great idea! I’m going to try it on some old iron plantation tools my brother wants to display in his cabin. Thanks Matt!
Nice tutorial man I learned something new!
Really like the idea of the vasoline. Ive never thought about that! Thanks for sharing! Great video very informative!

Thanks for watching, MrCGJ15! The Vaseline forms a nice protective layer that resists decay... and it make the button nice and shiny. HH!
The button clean up real nice Matt. Thanks for the demonstration.
Hi MAtt. Wow. What a great button and tutorial n how to safely clean one. Very educational. I've never thought to use Vaseline. Very utilitarian. ttyl -Drew
Thanks for the button clean up information. I will try it on a few.
Nice video... I found a WWII button couple weeks ago so I will give this a try for sure...

Very cool NYS button! Just dug my first CW button which was also a NYS in January. Got a video of me finding it on my channel. This video helped me when cleaning it too! Keep up the videos! I love seeing the Civil War goodies you are pulling out!
Great find and informative video Matt! I really like that magnifying glass, very nifty. I'll have to pay you to clean some of my relics. LOL

Sounds good, JD - I only charge $25/hour, but if you have your Tarheel Diggin' disount card and key FOB, you'll receive further discounts I cannot disclose unless you add them to your cart! LOL! Hey, keep in mind this works good for Indian Head pennies and large cents too.
Nice find good cleaning on the button. The vasoline works very good just takes some time and patience. Forrest GL & HH

Yes indeed, Forrest - I probably spent about an hour cleaning this button. However, when you think about it, I'm going to enjoy displaying it for the next 30 years, so it's worth the 1-hour investment! HH
Nice video Matt. Thanks for sharing! :)

Thanks Al - yes, I was bummed when I noticed the damage on the front of that button. Thanks for watching! HH
That's a great video, wish I could have seen it after I found my first button or coin. I have always used olive oil, this is the first time I've seen vassoline used. Why do you choose that over the olive oil?

Thanks IDH - I like the olive oil too. In fact, I like to soak my Indian Head Pennies in olive oil. However, I believe the Vaseline does a better job of coating the artifact after it's cleaned, which protects it from further decay or exposure to oxygen and dust. Just my personal experience... Hey - thanks for watching and commenting! HH
GREAT VIDEO ENJOYED GL&HH
Hope you are doing well, miss your vids! Found my first CW button, Armor Confederate block A just this past weekend. So nervous about the clean up and protecting the button. Do you still recommend the petroleum jelly.

Nice find! I'm still a big advocate for toothpick only (no water) when cleaning. Finishing with a little petroleum jelly is fine, but depends on the button. Sometimes I just use a little skin grease from my forehead or nose to give it a little "pop".

Tarheel Diggin' Will do sir. I'll actually feature that and my token cleaned up in the next video. The token ended up being a "Union For Ever" token dated 1861. real cool! I Have a feeling that house possibly housed a union soldier.
