Jim - a few observations... You need something on the top of the ladder rungs to allow for coefficient of friction with the sneakers and boots, otherwise you'll slip off due to water, mud, snow etc buildup. If you look at any "ladder rungs" online (for example) you'll see they are either perforated and/or have traction tread on them. There's a reason for that. I'd hate to see someone injured or die. Also, you have to drill a small drain hole in each of the ladder rungs at the bottom (we do a 1/2" diameter at 1" in from each end), to allow for condensation to escape. Otherwise, with the tubes fully welded, you essentially created a "bomb" where there is nowhere for the expansion and contraction gasses as well as moisture to release to. The welds will fail, it's a matter of time. There's a lot of things that go into ladders, I was the lead engineer and designer for one of the biggest in the country for 10-1/2 years. Not being negative - just empowering some wisdom. Look at OSHA 1917.118 Paul

Thanks. I thought about the slipping part while Jim was building the thing but did not think about the other points you brought up. Wow! I learned something from you today. Thank you Sir!!

You talking about your fab table, an old timer told me one time a tradesman is only as good as his tools and equipment is. You paid good money for that table but the end result is it makes your lay out easier keeps things square and basically pays for itself and then some. Your damn fine fabricator Jimbo as always love your videos 👍

After watching your videos, I purchase the HTP pro pulse 220. Been using it for over a year now and I absolutely luv this welder. I run 25/75 gas on .035 wire 90 percent of the time. It’s very quite machine compared to my other welder too. Thanks for the recommendation!

Your mill is in a good spot, nice and high, stable without any chance of tipping. Still wondering through, if you’re thinking about a stand eventually. I happen to have a mill on a very weird base and it needs a real stand that is permanent.

The tools are important. B/c without a welding table (like me) you can never get good results and stress and spend a lot of time on things that are a breeze for others. I cant get a good square. pieces not joining nicely.

When it came time to drill the holes in the tabs, I would have bet we were going to the drill press to drill several at one time , but no you threw us a curve ball. I know drilling holes in the tabs was fast forwarded, but that bit seemed to cut like a hot knife through butter. Were you using the Champion cobalt or XL-5? You were using a 90-10 Argon mix. Can you use the same for TIG?

Hi Jim. Off topic for this video, but Im going to build a double gate 12 ft wide x 6 ft tall and wanted to use 1-1/2" square for frame and 5/8 for pickets. What gauge tubing should I use for a strong gate? Also size and thickness of Posts? Thanks in advance if you can answer this for me.

jimmy diresta has an interesting gate build on his YT channel. April wilkerson has two cool gates on her YT channel. My gate will be shaped like direstas, but is a double entry gate, 17' wide by 6.5' tall. gate post side upright 8 foot 2x4 .25 wall tube, middle upright and laterals ate .125 4inch channel x4, lower lateral is .2 channel, the diagonal is .125 channel. here is the link to direstas build....kzread.info/dash/bejne/on93zNmjiJS9c7A.html i think he used 0.125 wall plate for everything.

I’ve built ladders like that on two horses You don’t need a welding table if I had to I would build it on the floor as well. I think your just a big guy you couldn’t handle making one on the floor. I never welded it al the way around either all your doing is waisting rods oh I’m a stick welder not that easy mig and mig is boring to me.
