Metabo grinder diagnose and repair

Customer's complaint was "Not working." Thanks for being precise! I've done hundreds of these and know what to look for. This particular model is a WE9-125Quick
Sorry about the crappy quality. I need a better camera and maybe need to mark off the area that shows up so I can stay in frame. I'm new to this, so please excuse me.

    I got a slightly used WE 14-125 VS from a pawn shop for $30 because it didn't work... and then I found your video. Somebody tinned the hot wire, then apparently folded the tinned tip over on itself and then jammed the whole fucking thing into the switch assembly. Stretched the holy hell out of the poor thing, it was a "hotdog in a hallway" situation. One $9 replacement switch later, I have a $220, 5", 12 amp grinder with variable speed control. Big thanks to you for making this video, can't overstate how much it helped.

    I just learned something this morning. In 2015, Hitachi bought Metabo for $180M. In 2017 KKR bought both companies. That's why Metabo grinders went down in quality since the model in this video. It all makes sense now. I was wondering why they would change such a good thing into garbage. They were the best!

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge, repair seems to be going out of style with a just replace it mentality 🤨. I have a metabo we 9-125 quick that I want to use at its low end of the rpm. It only wants to spin at higher rpms and if I turn it down it doesnt want to keep spinning with any sort of light pressure. Then it surges with power suddenly. The brushes have small grooves where the springs hold them down, is it time to replace? Any other parts that may be the culprit? Thank you again ✌🏻

    While you're checking the brushes, check for loose/charred connections where the leads from the brushes go into the field. If I remember correctly they tend to have issues at these contact points. I've seen the receptacle where the spade goes into the field widen from vibration, make intermittent contact, and end up black from the connection arcing. You can usually squeeze them tight again and file off the spade. If that doesn't seem to be the problem, you might have a bad electrical unit. You could bypass it and use an external speed control. Harbor Freight makes a router speed control that should work.

    Have a WEV 15-125 QUICK, great machine, unfortunately I had to use it in intense heat (Doha, QA) and eventually dusty environment, so lately the speed selector has no effect anymore (is turning at low speeds only no matter what where the selector is) and the power is gone. What would be a quick diagnose point of view? Worthless to say there no Metabo service here and the general quality of these kind of services is incredibly low - so I might wait for a chance to get it back somewhere in Europe and get it serviced there if I have no chance to set it up myself here. Thanks.

    I can almost guarantee that the magnet (Metabo calls it the "tacho disc") at the end of the armature has broken. The magnet tells the controller what speed the grinder is currently spinning at and increases or decreases power to the motor as needed, based on what speed the tool is set at. It's an inexpensive part, so order a couple (one to replace this time, one for next time, one in case you break it, etc.). While you're in there replacing it, you may as well replace the brushes. And a thing I like to do is CAREFULLY pick the seal off the bearing and shove a little grease in there, if it is a rubber seal on the bearing. If it is a metal seal, I just put some grease on the end of my finger and force it down in there. I should have demonstrated that in this video.

    Test the cord with an ohm meter. Also, make sure the brushes are making contact with the armature. Sometimes the end of the brush holder will heat up and form a sort of dam that prevents the brush from making contact. I've had to file out brush holders so many times that I just started doing it automatically. Have also had to replace plenty of melted brush holders. If nothing else works, try testing the field windings with your ohm meter. Hopefully you can find the problem. Most often it's a dead cord.

    Awesome video, I enjoy seeing someone do mechanical work they are exceptionally experienced at. I recently acquired a very lightly used WEP 15-150 grinder that I suspect has an issue with the thermal overload sensor. It powers up normally (red light solid until it reaches full speed), then roughly 1-3 seconds after reaching full speed, the light comes back on and the rpms drop to around 4200. It will stay running at this speed with the red light on for as long as you hold it (done it for a minute with no change). This is with no load and a cold start, nothing appears to affect its symptoms. Commutator is clean, brushes are fresh, grease looks good and no bearing noises. If it is most likely the thermal overload switch, will I simply need to replace the entire electronic unit? Thoughts? Thanks

    With that model it is usually the magnet on the end of the armature behind the rear bearing. It is used to detect RPMs by the electronic unit. Check that magnet. I can almost guarantee that it is broken or cracked.

    When I mention the button popping on the brushes, they have a little spring-a-mathing that pops a non-conducive material out, pushing the brush away from the bars. It keeps the brush from getting too short which can create excessive heat, burning up the motor.

    Check the tacho disc on the end of the armature to make sure it has not fallen off and that it is OK. If it's not that, it's probably the temp sensor or the electronic module. If you know what you're doing, you could remove the tacho disc and bypass the electronic module. Then it will just be running on straight power, but you'll lose any thermal protection. I've done this for folks who didn't want to spend the money on a new electronic module.

    Hello, Centrifugal force being the law, corroborated by the fact that I have never seen any make of angle grinder that had any grease on the pinion or main gear after even short use. I am left wondering why no maker has addressed this major flaw in design? Their answer seems to be to cheapen up the electrical side so it will fail before the gear train rather than fix the problem. AveE likes molybdenum disulfide which I am sure he does for sticking power, however although he says it is super expensive he never quite specifies to what degree. At $350 per tube (small at that) it is worth more than buying the gears! Have you run across any that have solved this lubrication issue? Take care. Doug

  • @fishinandfixinshxt6660

    @fishinandfixinshxt6660

    In the videos of his that I saw, he chose grinders that didn't have much of a reservoir for extra grease. That may be why he advocated for such a high quality lubricant. Grinders such as this Metabo have more room in the gear case for extra grease. The grease gets flung around more which helps to keep it cool, but it still tends to boil off and dry out. Maybe it's more of an issue of sealing off the gear cases better. I mean, you don't want a ton of pressure to build up in these things, so it would have to be super strong. I don't think it could feasibly be done. Not sure if I answered your question.

  • @douglasthompson2740

    @douglasthompson2740

    It can be done and has been done for decades. The Skil worm drive saws are oil bath and are legendary for reliable work under harsh conditions. There are no pressure problems. The angle grinder design is just a poor design. The grease will only work if it can leave a friction modifier imbedded in the gear since it doesn't stay on the gear itself. That takes a very expensive grease and is no long term answer. The quick solution would be a grease fitting to introduce new grease right into the gears and an escape mechanism. But that is not likely to happen as the manufacturers sell more when the current tool fails quickly. Having a large reservoir is no answer as the grease will permanently stay in those recesses and never make its way back to where it is needed. The only way that can happen currently is you would have to way overheat the gearcase to where the grease lost its viscosity and drained back. However that would be very very hot and would again end up with grease in the motor as well as other damage.. Take care. Doug

  • @fishinandfixinshxt6660

    @fishinandfixinshxt6660

    You're missing something about the Skil saw. First, they spin at a much lower speed than the angle grinders. Second, they have a bladder that expands when the oil warms up to compensate for the increase in pressure.

    Also, the grease that Metabo uses is a lot more runny than the stuff that AvE advocates. It does indeed circulate throughout the gear case, until it dries up, that is.
