Meta-analysis 2.0 in the Language Sciences: Current Advances in Synthetic Methods | Interface 3

Ғылым және технология

Synthetic methods are very well established. Indeed, several hundred research syntheses and meta-analyses have been published across a wide range of domains within the applied language sciences. This body of work has yielded numerous insights (Chong & Plonsky, in press). As we might expect in any active empirical arena, a number of innovations in synthetic methods have been introduced in recent years. These changes have led both to higher validity evidence as well as to an expansion in the types of questions that secondary researchers are able to address. This talk provides an overview and illustration of such techniques-collectively, “meta-analysis 2.0”-which range from collecting and extracting secondary data (Quan et al., 2024) and advanced effect size aggregation (e.g., meta-SEM; Raeisi-Vanani et al., 2022) to reliability generalization meta-analysis (e.g., Aryadoust et al., 2023), bibliometrics (Plonsky, 2023), meta-analytic replication (Boers et al., 2021), and second-order assessments of meta-analytic quality (Chalmers et al., in press; Hu, 2024).
Speaker:
Luke Plonsky is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University, where he teaches courses in second language acquisition and research methods. His work in these and other areas has resulted in over 120 articles, book chapters, and books. He has been particularly active in seeking to advance and improve the methodological capacity of the field, addressing topics ranging from sampling, replication, and experimental design to statistical analyses, reporting practices, open science, meta-analytic methods, bibliometrics, and research ethics. Luke is Editor of Studies in Second Language Acquisition and Managing Editor of Foreign Language Annals. In addition to a current appointment as Honorary Professor at the International Education Institute at University of St. Andrews (Scotland), Luke has held faculty appointments at Georgetown University and University College London, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Spain in 2021. He has also lectured in China, Japan, The Netherlands, Poland, Puerto Rico, and Spain. Luke received his PhD in Second Language Studies from Michigan State University in 2011.
