    7:04 I think this comparison highlights the biggest flaw with Metastasis. Metastasis actually shows more, it shows Jesse bleeding and being injured however, whether its due to budget or bad special effects artists, the "injuries" Jesse has are visibly... nothing. He's bleeding, but considering how much Hank was beating the shit out of him, he looks fine, which ends up taking us out of the scene as we're shown how fake it is. Whereas in the original, we actually don't Jesse's injuries at all. The scene is centered on Hank, so that's all we see. Even when Jesse is in frame, the camera is focused on Hank's bloody hand. Despite it showing less, it feels more brutal.

  • @fulldisclosureiamamonster2786

    @fulldisclosureiamamonster2786

    Жыл бұрын

    Henry also asks his questions and then starts beating up Jose, unlike Hank screaming out the questions as he's punching Jesse's face in. This is a relatively minor change but it slightly recontextualizes the scene to Henry making the conscious decision to beat him up without giving him the chance to talk rather than getting carried away in rage like with Hank. Also him holding his face in shame is just cheesy and unsubtle compared to the more grounded reaction of Hank seemingly nonverbally in denial over what he'd just done and unsure what to do. I do like how they rewrote the scene so that Henry gets there at the same time as Jose though, it makes him a little less dumb than Jesse already at the door and not locking it when he sees a cop approaching rapidly with murderous intent plainly on his face for 10 seconds.

    The Metastasis actor playing Tuco is actually a very decent Mexican actor and I think his take on a narco is very well done. Altho it's not Tuco, it is a very real kind of Mexican narco who is likable to the community altho killer and insane... You can kind of understand why narco culture is appealing to young people in small towns with this kind of character. Tuco, on the other hand, is a tyrant.

    There are a lot of Narcos actors in Metastasis, and it's hilarious to see how much worse their acting is here. Jesse is Fabio Ochoa in the first season, Hank is Orlando Henao from North Valley. Tuco is Gilberto from Cali. How is it possible that they all are so much worse here lol. Idk if it's the script, direction, or if they literally just did 1 take. This comparison is so important for filmmaking knowledge. The scene where Hank beats Jesse has really great emotional resonance but I had no idea why until now. *Lighting* the dark shadows obscures Jesse's face and the scene which makes your brain fill in the finer details while creating a dramatic set piece. Metastasis is done in broad daylight well lit which shows the worst of the effects. If you're doing effects and they look bad obscure as much as you can without removing, it's one of the many reasons metastasis fails.

    You aren't wrong about the effects, but I actually feel the overall scene felt more realistic in metastasis (a bloody rare occurrence - meta being superior) but just personally I always felt it was off putting the way Jesse just sorta, stands there, when Hank is CLEARLY striding at him with violent intent. The way meta Jesse can basically tell straight away, going on his body language, hands up, backing away AS he defends himself verbally, it did feel like a more realistic build-up to the beating. You are right about the beating itself being poorly done though. From what I've seen, meta Hank is one of the better actors in this version so that probably helped too

  • @severitas1

    The problem with Metastasis is that the actors doesn't show the gravity of the situation on the emotional level -the same goes for the cinematography-, they just act like some escene else, and their interpretation of every escene is diferent, lose context, even if it is not coherent with the last or the entire acting, so the interpretation of the espectator is that it feels strange, sometimes good but often do not have the potenciality of BB, it's just watchable

There's a difference between a character being unhinged and being insane, and I think the original unhinged portrayal of Tuco is more nuanced and actually even *less* predictable than a purely insane portrayal. And when I think about it, my favorite quality of Tuco's is his unpredictability. It's also such a dramatic and sudden shift in the power dynamic of the scene that it feels better that Tuco is suddenly shocked and compliant. It feels like the redone scene takes the wind out of Walt's trick, which I think is major loss

    On the final scene in the video, BB kept the shots wide with few cuts to deliberately emphasize the physical and allegorically emotional distance between Walt and Skyler, and takes time to emphasize Skyler chewing on Walt's food for thought before dropping the IFT, and Bryan Cranston's acting convey both Walt's shock at the revelation and his recontextuaizing it with his line about honesty. Meanwhile on Metastasis, the shots are primarily close ups that cut between Walter and Cielo so frequently that we can't connect with either of their reactions, while the relatively short pause before Cielo drops the IFT and the equally short pause between said drop and her exit paint her merely as petty. And Blanco's reaction looks like the hero from a Saturday morning cartoon got duped by the villain in the most formulaic manner possible. But I'm just happy Dean Norris follows through on his punches. Edit: Who's playing MS Tuco, a squirrel?

This colombian Tuco actually has a cool design; i like how the colombian Hank has a more passive aggressive interaction with Saul Bueno, even taking a photo with him, XD; the colombian Hank and Jesse scene has some bad sound effects, but i like how he looks so remorseful after beating him up; I'm kinda divided between the 'i fucked ted' scenes, Anna Gunn's delivery was more subtle and matter-of-fact, with a type of revengeful anger in her eyes, but the Cielo Branco's delivery seemed more build up because of the different dialogue but generally it was more melodramatic.

    Time and budget were the main reasons Metastasis differed so hard in quality to Breaking Bad, but when taking that into consideration, Metastasis is a pretty damn fun watch by itself, and there are some truly good performances there all things considered. I've watched Metastasis once, and Breaking Bad 3 times, and I think Metastasis is way better than people give it credit for. Of course it looks super silly when compared to the original, but again: the difference in time, budget and focus (soap opera vs actual dramatic series) explains this. For me, the highlights in Metastasis were the actors for Saúl Bueno, Walter Jr, Tuco and José Miguel Rosas (Jesse Pinkman). Seriously, Tuco is a delight to watch in Metástasis once you watch him from the start to the end, not some isolated scenes that lack the context of build up to him. And José Miguel Rosas is AMAZING, they literally couldn't have found a better version of a colombian Jesse Pinkman. His acting was superb. Honestly, the only actor I felt was completely miscast in Metástasis was, sadly, Walter Blanco's actor. Dude just couldn't deliver, and I wasn't even expecting him to come anywhere close to Bryan Cranston, I just wanted him to be believable... and he failed at it. Everyone else acted better than him, lol.

    The biggest thing I get from these comparisons is the creators of the remake don't understand the idea of telling a story through framing and composition. They seem to think if the dialog is basically the same and the cuts are basically timed the same then the scene will be the same. But there is so much story that is told simply through the cinematography that helps inform the tone of the scene, the power dynamics of the characters, the intensity of the moment. Its the basics of film language that the remake doesn't get right.

    I actually like both Sauls! Would love to see them work together-they’d be the damn horsemen of the apocalypse!

    I think this shows how good Raymond's acting was that small pause while he's talking before the line "beat THE PISS out of your mule boy!" really sells how unhinged he is

    That would be cool, but I think there's this thing about Saúl's age (his actor), he's older, at least they make shoots like in Metastasis, recording all seasons in one.

    Proof that you can't replicate this legend. You need the right actors and editors.

    As goofy as Metastasis is, I found the Saul Goodman/Saul Bueno (lol) scene comparison interesting. Saul Goodman you can tell is a snake who likes tapdancing on prosecutors with his legal knowledge and fights for his well-paying clients. But Saul Bueno almost seems like he's making a genuine moral argument against these cops for coming down too hard on some poor kid.
