My wife works at a school where, well, let's say the families aren't exactly well off. EVERY KID is issued a brand new tablet at the beginning of the school year. Within the first month, about 25 to 30% of them are broken, and when it's time to turn them in they're lucky to get 50 of them back in working condition. So go ahead, cut those checks, but you're gonna need twice as many devices as you think you do.

The new tablets are still cheaper than buying new textbooks. The school is still saving money with a 50% retention rate. The textbook companies are encouraging the schools to buy tablets and pay for the monthly subscriptions for the e-books rather than buy hardcopy textbooks.

I grew up in the Bronx and all the black kids had fancy puffy down coats. I've never owned one until I reached my thirties and they are amazingly lightweight and make life so much easier actually.
