Have you ever heard of the Super Ballon d’Or? Okay, maybe you did recently as fans and journalists have been asking France Football to bring the award out of their hidden box and wipe the dust off for a new recipient.
Now, if you’re not really clear on what the Super Ballon d’Or is, it’s all right. It has been awarded only once in the history of football and that happened over 3 decades ago, so don’t worry; not your fault. Just sit tight let me tell you about this really special individual award.

The Super Ballon d’Or is basically just the Ballon d’or, but instead of it being awarded to the best player of the year, that very one was awarded to the best player of the last 3 decades. And it was Alfredo di Stefano who has received the only version of this award so far and that was in 1989.
Yeah, I know, not Pele, not Maradona, Alfredo Di Stefano. But here’s the thing. Back then, the Ballon d’Or was only awarded to European players, so the GOATs weren’t even considered. Di Stefano, however, although born in Argentina, was considered for the award because of his Spanish citizenship. Hell, the lad even played for the Spain national team, so he was basically a European footballer.
But in 1995, France Football opened up the Ballon d’Or to players from any nationality around the world who were playing in Europe, and that’s why we’ve had the likes of Ronaldo Nazario, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and George Weah win the award since then.
In 2007, the Ballon d’Or was opened even further to any player at all playing professional football anywhere in the world. So now, even if you play for a club in Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Australia, or even Antarctica, you can be considered for the Ballon d’Or, and as an extension, the Super Ballon d’Or.
Right, so 34 years after the last and only Super Ballon d’Or was given, there are shouts for another to be awarded. And this one looks like it’ll hold more weight to it if France Football really agrees to revive the award.
First of all, like we have explained, Di Stefano was given the award for being the best player in Europe over the 3 decades leading up to 1989, but this time, the award will be given to the outright best player in the world over the last 3 decades. That alone makes it a bigger award than the last one.

Not just as a player, Messi is an inspiration for many. For his team he is the ultimate which was clearly visible in the WC. The team was ready to die for him. For Inter Miami also, Messi's contribution has been phenomenal. Not just in terms of scoring but also in terms of inspiring the team to play better. I dont think any other player has contributed in such a way

Not only a great player but for contribution to football both on and off the field makes me believe that Messi truly deserves the Super Ballendor..... not only as a tribute to his greatness as a player but more as a recognition to the contribution that he has given to the great game of Football. So I hope the focus shifts from the question " who is right or wrong?" But *"what is truly right ?*

I think that I m lucky to have lived in time of Messi. Even though I don’t know any of the past players or the teams, however I watch as many games that is available on KZread and can’t see anyone who not only creates some of the most amazing skills but also lifts the team up to another level. I say I can’t say I know the footballer who received it but please keep the old super Ballon d’Or where it is. The entire world knows his name and what he’s done and still doing for the game of football. Messi deserves a global Ballon d’Or designed just for him and only for him. He deserves to stand above all others.

I am old enough to have watched the 1970 world cup live... When I was at school they showed us the 1960 European Cup final Real Madrid v Eintracht with Puskas and Distefano (full match) at that time it was the greatest European Cup final ever seen. For many years Pele was the best player I ever saw... I saw all of them Maradona, George Best, Cruyff, Zidane, etc etc, etc.... There have been many wonderful players over the years but Messi is above them all for sheer footballing magic... You could argue some players might be slightly more skilled in dribbling or ball control ability (Ronaldinho perhaps), so are professional jugglers or thar others had more pace and could hit the ball harder. Each separate skill, does not elevate the holder above others on it own, that's why amount of goals scored is not an indicator of footballing greatness. Joseph Bican or Gerd Muller were never put forward as the greatest "footballers" of all time for example. Vision, awareness, goalscoring ability and the ability to create something out of nothing, all combine to put a player in that conversation. Messi is unmatched I think... He has set a new standard. He also played in the greatest world cup final I have ever seen.. 🤷♂️

Me personally I'd have them do the super ballon d'or in 2026 70 years since the first ballon d'or was awarded and its also a world cup year plus it would be easier to whip out the super ballon d'or after 30 years after that one considering 30 years after 2026 will be a 100 years since they first awarded a ballon d'or so make sense to have them do it then

It wouldn't end up on a world cup year everytime they pull it out after the 2026 one if they do it that way and actually stick to it being every 30 years the one after 2026 would be a euros/copa america year and do I don't think it will affect the outcome of this one as Messi has it in the bag at this point but future ones it's possible like a player could come along and all he's missing is the world cup and they could win it on that year the super ballon d'or gets awarded have to wait and see what France football decides but 2026 is definitely the year to do it for the 2nd one that way the 3rd super ballon d'or gets awarded at the 100th ballon d'or ceremony
