Messerschmitt Bf-108 - Restoration Update #08 - February 2019 - Part 2
Ойын-сауық
FoF Mechanic's Corner - February 2019 update on the Messerschmitt Bf-108 restoration. In Part 2 of this 2 Part clip Fantasy of Flight restoration specialist Paul Stecewycz takes us into the large paint stripping booth and first explains, and then shows the process of plastic blasting the paint layers and filler materials off of the 108 wings. It's a dirty and tiring process, but most interesting too.
As usual it is informative and fun. Check it out!

Tks for taking the time to put your work on video and uploading it for us. Going to be an awesome day to see this bird in the sky again. I am keenly following your restoration. Well done so far. Greetings from South Africa
Thank you for sharing. Never thought I’d find this fascinating but, hey I truly did😍
Another fascinating video................or rather videoS! So glad I didnt have to wait for part 2! Makes my little blasting cabinet look very small!
This series is great. I'm starting to see what fixing old airplanes is all about.
Great vid. I can't wait to see some instructional on Tig welding on magnesium. Also can't wait to see how the old rivets are drilled out without doing harm to the reusables. I worked one summer doing cargo trailer repairs, including replacing aluminum channel beams, and skins and roofs using "buck rivets" and can't wait to see the aircraft equivalents.
Paul is a natural narrator and brings the restoration process to life in all its detail Thank you for the special effort of bringing this to the aviation enthusiasts on KZread. Looking forward to the next episode

I'll bet Paul is a one-take wonder, he speaks so well.
Paul, what ever Kermit pays you I suspect it's not enough. You are truly gifted.
Very interesting and informative videos and I must say that Paul Stecewycz is a very good narrator. Kudos.
Im always lQQking forward to these vids ! - amazing to see the wing stripped down - looks so new ..
Cool. Brings back a few memories. Working in the oil industry on the manufacturing side blasting with chilled iron grit with a muzzle velocity of 350 -400 mph. that stuff could seriously spoil your day. Had to wear the full suit and an air Fed helmet with rip off visors. Also striping the paint off a jet Provosts wing's by hand. In places it was so thick it peeled off and was still sticky underneath (it was used as a bomb disposal instruction piece at RAF North Luffenham) great memories. Following this restoration. Best regards. Forgot to add. When blasting with sand ALWAYS wear the full suit and air Fed helmet. Blasted sand releases silicone into the air and it can be absorbed by the skin and can cause silicosis.
I absolutely love the Mechanics Corner videos. Paul does an excellent job of explaining the process and the work. Thank you.
A lot of hard work and just seeing Paul with all that clobber on and that heavy nozzle is the reality of what really lies behind aircraft restoration, another excellent insight into behind the scenes at Fantasy of Flight, thank you again for a most informative video.
Simply amazing !!! What a wonderful job
Enjoy these update videos very much
Another great video. Thank you very much. Have a nice weekend!! :-)
Again, you are exceptional at explaining your craft of restoration. I'm glad you cant make these videos. That shows what Fantasy of Flight is all about.
I used to work for United helicopter in Sarasota, Fl, my job was to strip the old paint and sand blast parts all day long I loved doing that, we restored hiller helicopters. I had a chance to meet Kermitt at a air show in Lakeland, sun and fun! He came to our booth. Awesome guy.
Watching this made my back hurt......and yours im sure.......What a really big big job.....An thanks so much....I need a shot of Rum after this......~~~~`Ya ya ya..!
Great stuff Paul , no one sees all the boring mundane work on the prep side , you passed this off so well on the post . Can’t wait to see the wing jig and skin replacement work , metric rivets ? . Looking at rear fuse I see that the frames and stringer so similar to the 109 makes sense I guess.
Just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos and appreciate the time time you take to make them. Thank you.
My favorite part of FoF videos are these restoration videos. And Paul does a wonderful job of explaining everything. I always look forward to the next update in the series. Thank you for providing us an insight as to what it takes to do this level of restoration work.
Great video. Loved the camera mounted to the nozzle of the sand blaster. Please keep these coming. I am looking forward to the final product. I think it is an awesome airplane to save.
Thank you so much for these very interesting videos about restoring the Ms 108. So interesting and wonderful to watch this plane come back to life again. Hugh respect to you all!
You weren't kidding about the paint thickness. I know it'll take seemingly forever, but I am looking so forward to seeing the finished product. I love the Bf-108 - it's a beautiful plane.
Agree with all the pos comments, excellent series! I also love the demos! Looking forward to the next video...
Thanks again Paul, always look forward to your videos. Easy to understand...quite a skill to be able to explain to novices such a complicated process.
Really enjoy the videos keep them coming thanks Kevin.
I really appreciate your restoration videos Paul! Thanks for sharing the process.
Thank you again for these updates! Keep it coming, it is awesome to see this project move forward. I’ve definitely learned a ton about the process and peaking behind the curtain of the monumental effort it takes to restore these old birds.
Pretty cool. I love all the videos from fantasy of flight but as an A&P student I really look forward to these restoration updates. This is the kind of work I would like to do some day.
You could have a large clear plastic tarp that is suspended in the air below the wing, by 4-6 posts, and have it slanted angled down on one side and have your suction tube at the end where the plastic pellets collect and run to, and have the sucker vacuuming the plastic at the same time while you blast. Like upside down tent. You can have the a plastic background barrier too, that clear plastic you can get from Lowes that comes in huge sheets thats smooth. Something simple, like that can save you so much time.
Thanks for the update on the 108
Paul, great presentation on camera. Thank you for sharing your skills and craft.
Beautiful airplane, very interesting restoration project handled by a total professional. Thank you for posting this... cheers
Thank You so much Paul . This is very Interesting And very well done. Love it. Mr Weeks is lucky to have you in his employ!
Great stuff Paul. Thank you!!
I´m thinking ahead: Great to have the Fi-156 as well...that way you can always switch engines if you need to down the line. Great to be able to move up the learning curve with you, Steve!
Paul....perhaps David can fabricate a wider/taller version of your reclamation funnel that you could attach to the opposite edge (leading or trailing) you are media blasting so you can collect most of the media while you are blasting. Or mount it on a rolling cart that would allow you to also raise and lower the large collection funnel.
love these episodes! thank you!
Thank you Mr. Weeks and crew for making this video series. Very interesting and helpful to those of wanting to do things the right way.
Thank you for sharing. A great video!
Great up date video ! Thanks for the I-R Air plug ! Keeps our pension checks coming ! I recall seeing a 108 show up with the lunch crowd from time to time during my years as an airport bum in NJ ! Its always struck me as a pretty airplane ( and we all know that adage ) that performed well out of an average-length paved strip . Keep the progress reports coming !
Paul, there are things called "tool balancers" that are sort of a combination of coil spring and bungee cord that are designed to hold up heavy tools so that they effectively have no weight. You could get one and hang it from the rafters and stick the other end on that blaster hose. YOu can find these from Graingers, for instance. They aren't real cheap and have a somewhat limited range, so you might consider simply rigging up a combination of some rope and a bungee cord to hold the last 6 or 8 feet of that hose about 4-5 feet off the floor. Would make the thing a heck of a lot easier to move around, and some poly rope and bungee cords would probably be a few dollars at Walmart.

They would also need a lot longer pressure hose.

I totally agree, all heavy tools were on tool balancers when I worked on the production line at General Motors, from air powered buffs & grinders to big spot welders. It wouldn’t be hard to make up a gantry on wheels to suspend it on to have all of the flexibility they need.

I have seen those balancers in car production lines. I am sure that they ease the weight.
What a great repair facility with all the best tools and equipment. Paul puts it all to good use as talented technician...
Thank you for posting more great content!
You just know this is going to be a beautiful addition to Fantasy of Flight when the restoration is complete ! Just awesome !
Feb. 8, 2019----Thanks for the video. Checked your website out and wondered what happened to the B-17 that was there? Was OTR driver and our yard in Florida wasn't far from you place. Took a bunch of photos including me at one of the waist gunner positions. This was a good 9-10 years ago.
Great video. Liked the horiz. stab trim mechanism, very cool. A lot of work, but hard work always has it's rewards. Thanks for the video!
My great honour to You at Kermit's team how deep and serious You are working in a restoring process! Exiting to follow You 🌹🌹🌹
Awesome! Really informative presentation!
Great videos I'm learning so much !
Great stuff! Thanks Paul
Absolutely love these videos. I always get excited when I see a new on in my que. Paul you are the best.
These are great videos, thank you for going into such detail, it is very much appreciated.
I always enjoy these restoration and fabrication videos that are so well executed and explained.
Great videos. Enjoyed everyone. Looking forward to the next. 👍
Don't envy you that blasting job Paul - very tedious indeed. You must have the patience of a saint! Thoroughly enjoy your presentations, thank you.
this project has been an absolute awesome adventure to be a part of thanks for the update and a great vidieo
Absolutely fascinating, many thanks Paul.
Absolutely amassing buddy, l'm glued to my iPad with interest... As I watch the process of restoring this great aircraft...... Thanks for your effort... I can't wait for the next episode .
2 episodes on 1 day, best wednesday ever
Loving this series. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. What a great job and so informative.
Love these! I'm always looking for the next one. Thanks for all the effort you put into them. John, UK.
I really love this in-depth stuff - can't wait for the next part!
I couldn't agree more. Media blasting SUCKS! Thanks Paul, your videos are great.
Paul, you really know your stuff. Very informative and well presented.
You may have been wearing the face dust mask as a form of "belt and braces" but it's not worn properly as it should be further up on the bridge of your nose. Even then your facial hair will not make a good, effective seal around the mask. The proof of how effective the mask is will no doubt come when you next blow your nose! Stay safe, I really enjoy watching this restoration as it progresses.
Cool! Definitely looking forward to the next episode to see how that is done!
Always interesting, can't wait to see finished aircraft, one day........
Love this channel!
As always: great video! Love to see the master at work!
The nozzle cam is so cool. Great video thanks for putting it together
Awesome project and yet again a great informative video!
G’day and greetings from Tasmania Australia great videos it really gives you an idea of the hard work that goes into a restoration. I’ve only seen a restoration once and that was on a replica of Smith’s plane The Southern Cross which was a Fokker tri plane loved it. Thank you once again I can appreciate the humidity and heat you guys work under looking forward to the next instalment thank you John.
Really like your videos there very interesting and informative keep up the great work, thanks for sharing.
Now we know why the additional fuel tank was installed. They needed the extra fuel to carry the weight of all that paint.
Excellent as always
I would really like to see an colored artist sketch of each layer paint scheme of the wings. To see how it looked throughout its history.
Really great job. I would like to make a russian subtitles, because here many people are also interested in messerschmitt's creations and at this project especially.
Cool another update from Paul!
Very cool! Thanks for the look. That's a job I wouldn't mind doing.
Awesome! keep up the great work! 😊
I do love these videos. Its funny to state that a sandblast room with a grate floor is to expensive to build and you do not have one because of the cost, on the other hand I am sure the restoration of a A-26 is a million dollar project and one of many when done ..... sandblast room seems to me to be a few dollars from that perspective. Maybe the cost of a party Kermit has? Keep the videos coming, I do learn from them.
Really great stuff!
The artist. Removing paint and returning to a blank canvas.
Really nice plain and really good job!
Great series on the Taifun restoration. Following with interest. Cringing a bit about the micro plastics in this one.

I was thinking exactly the same. Very passionate about aviation history and restorations of marvelous pieces of technology. But generating micro plastics in an open area without any recycling? This is not very eco friendly...
What a great job you have.
Great work! Very impressive! I really like to follow your videos! You are like Ed China but for airplanes! Thanks for showing you work. Greetings for Chile
lay a plastic tarp down where the media lands, then you can lift the tarp up and the media runs to the center . makes picking it up easier..
Damn i like these videos and specifically this Aircraft...please keep up the good work!!!! Please!!!
I like it! Thank you.
Saw the Willy Messerschmitt paint scheme in an earlier video. I suspect willy opted for for the interior leather in BLACK.
Great video. Thanks
Love these videos. So interesting. Bondo, good grief!
I wonder how much weight you're removing with all these layers. She's going to fly like a dream.

It's probably too late to weigh the wings "before and after" alas.
Thank you, was a great video. Was wondering how you were going to recover the media.
New drinking game Drink everytime Paul says "actually".
Quite amazing, look good, with just polishing the Aluminium, make it look very Art Deco.
