■The review of an album “MESSAGE” by MONGOL800.
MONGOL800 is a Japanese rock band formed while at junior high school in Okinawa in 1998. When they released the 2nd album “MESSAGE” in September 2001, it was a big hit such as being the first top of Japanese music charts among indie albums, and sold approximately 2.8 million copies. They didn’t really appear in broadcast media, however, they had a great impact to a Japanese punk rock music boom spread around 175R, ROAD OF MAJOR, and gagagaSP. Especially, “Chiisana Koi no Uta” is popular with a wide range of generations, and it is said that this boom all started with this song.
Moreover, this album has not only being the point of the boom, but also having an aspect like Japanese popular songs because it tells universal themes regardless of times and borders. There are the themes that never change, so they sing about adolescent loves, world peace against the background of the battle of Okinawa, hope of those who make an effort to make their dreams come true, and the heart for those who are by your side. “MESSAGE”, loved by a lot of people, connected Japanese punk rock music with Japanese popular music, and it became so precious in Japanese music culture. The affectionate “message”, which they were only around 20 years old at the time, has been preserving even now, and it will be ever loved.

1998年、沖縄県の高校在学中に結成されたロックバンド・MONGOL800。2001年9月にリリースされた2ndアルバム「MESSAGE」は、インディーズアルバム史上初のオリコン1位を獲得し、約280万枚を売り上げるなどロングヒットを記録した。メディア露出こそ多くなかったものの沖縄から全国に名を轟かせた彼らは、当時、175Rやロードオブメジャー、ガガガSPなどを中心に巻き起こっていた青春パンクブームに大きな影響を及ぼした。特に、今でも広い世代に愛される名曲「小さな恋のうた」は、青春パンクブームの火付け役とも言われている。
更にこの作品は、青春パンクブームの重要な位置づけにいながらも、同時に歌謡曲とさえ言える側面も持ち合わせている。なぜなら、時代や国境を問わず響く普遍的なテーマが歌われているからだ。例えば青春時代の恋愛について歌った楽曲や沖縄戦を背景に世界の平和を歌った歌。そして夢を追う人の背中を押す歌から、すぐそばにいる大切な人への想いまで、時代が移り変わろうとも決して変わらないテーマがある。そして、多くの人に愛された「MESSAGE」は、青春パンクとポップスの懸け橋となり、日本の音楽シーンにおいて重要な存在となった。当時まだ20歳前後という若さの彼らが残した愛溢れる“メッセージ”。それは20年経った今も色褪せることなく受け継がれ、そしてこれからも愛され続けるであろう。
