This song was one of the most physically challenging covers I have done to date. Although the main double kick pattern isn't all that technical, playing the 16th note triplets at that speed for so long proved to be very enduring for me. I spent a lot of time working on my stamina and it has improved myself as a double kick player immensely. I could only play this song by playing the beat at slower tempos first and building up to the actual speed of the song. Just as my 'Do Not Look Down' cover, I set up another set of hats under the ride to solely play open in the various sections so I could play the beat more comfortably in an open hand position. I'm sure this is how Tomas Haake would also play it.
I didn't use triggers, sound replace or alter my original drums in any way other than doing my best to mix and pull a good sound. Hope you all enjoy as much as I have! Feel free to contact me on facebook with any questions.

Dear Troy, Good luck with the new Meshuggah album. I mean, if you want to play it. I do too :D It was SUCH A GOOD SHOW. It was the first time i ever saw them in my life and my jayyysusss me and the wife was both blown away. So keep on hitting them skins. I am learning double bass. I am a drummer for 21 years now but I never needed double bass in any of my bands before , so my new band is 'tricky' so I can appreciate all the hard work. The weirdest thing is , so much more bodywork and foot placement so it's very intricate. I am only double 'bassing it' for a year or 1.5 years now. have you been doing that footwork long? But once you get it down, I think it starts to flow. I am still on the 'thighs only' part of double bass for the most part. but I am a jazz drummer originally and alt rock so I am trying to beef up my calves. Anyway I am rambling and I really appreciate the fact, that this tis super hard. I am still trying to find 'my spot/ my posture/' you know what I mean. Here I am, drumming for 2 and a half decades, never needing this in my life, but finally I get bored with my handwork and half-the-work-foot-work so this is the next step. I think. Anyway thank you for these videos, and keep on drumming. We said in incoherent speech, chanted, so it made no sense 'MUH SHOO GAH MUH SHOO GAH" and it was sweet. Happy drumming and if you care to reply I would be super happy. cuz ur younger than me but we can all help each-other out. Drummers are awesome. cheers

covering a song like this and composing a song like this are two seperate WORLDS of technical ability. anyone can cover a song that is crazy hard to play, but to have it come from your brain is insanity

Yeah I can't hear them on the record either.. When it comes to ghost notes I just let my hand do what's comfortable. I never force ghost notes out or consciously think of them.. Playing this groove the way I have felt comfortable.
Morning Coffee with extra shuggah
Holy flying mother of fucking shit... i bet when he's sleeping his legs start to spasm like hell
To all of the people hating on the ghost notes. They sound off because of the continuous sextuplets on the bass drum. He is doing a eighth note triplets on the crash the first hit and second hit are the same as the bass drum. the left hand is playing the 2nd note of the sextuplet. And the right hand is playing the first on the crash. It all is triplet based. The ghost were just the off beat. Hence thinking he is off. In a nutshell his left foot and left hand were together every other beat. Haha if this makes sense great if not whatever haha. Drum talk is a hell of a thing.

You were able to learn Future Breed Machine easily? I mean, all of the others you pointed out were easy for me, with the addition of Do Not Look Down and Marrow, and possibly Combustion... but there are tons of parts in FBM that I just can't wrap my head around...

Your real dad yeah easily i mean for meshuggah songs. i spent 1-2 month To work on the difficults parts such as the blasts patterns with the crash and china in the intro. the rest is just common meshuggah type rythm. the problem is that i didnt bas the part so me and my teacher were trying To rewrite that as precisely as possible.... the rest le the songs are more easy To play (maybe not new millenium cyanide Christ but its a question of tempo)

Tomas Haake must've been like "I don't want anybody to play my songs"
Thanks a lot mate. I've been playing for almost 15 years. A big addition to fills it the kick drums. If you haven't started, that will open much more creativity
Your average person don't even realize how hard it is to do any thing heavy metal they think it's just a bunch of screaming and noise, but it's actually one of the most articulate things a person will ever hear if they just try.
Lactic acid resistance training, everybody!!
God, i love the swing rhythm on the high-hat. It just elevates that double-bass run
This almost doesn't even seem possible to pull off. The sheer endurance of keeping up that pace without stopping would be torture. Great job!
Yeah it gets a little tricky and every drummer that plays double kick experiences this. Im not really playing above 180 right now but working on the ankle technique to get there. With this song or double kick at similar speeds start slower 140-150 (so its definitely leg strokes) and work up to the tempo.. I was setting the metronome at a slower speed before filming this and it helped me get to playing this comfortable
my legs were hurting just by watching this :( amazing job man, huge respect

Exactly mate. I'm glad you noticed as well. The kicks are about the same speed as playing 16th notes at 160bpm (if you get your calculator out haha). The transition into ankle strokes happen around 170/180 for most people
Damn holding those triplets on the feet like that while playing that on top and being consistent ain't exactly a walk in the park
Best drum covers on KZread. No contest.
Pulled the trigger on a used Demon Drive direct double pedal tonight after seeing this video!!! It's been almost 12 years since I got my Iron Cobras after trying the speed cobra and not liking it and I feel like I'm finally ready for an upgrade! Okay I got the pedal and I can confirm that I can now play this song! thanks Troy Wright and Pearl! ;^) but forreal, the pedal is actually amazing and although I haven't had the chance to fine tune it yet, its so consistent and lightweight, my lefts are way more on point than ever before! I'm really getting that speed and control I always lacked, and best part is the left foot doesn't move an inch! Truly a great piece of equipment and inspirational video!
Check out the Transcript preview in the description and you can see what foot hits where. There are 3 16th note triplets per 8th note pulse in 6/8. Right foot starts, left foot lands with the snare
It just goes to show you that no matter how hard you try... People will always hate. Hope you see the love. Keep rocking!!!!
Dude this isn't just challenging for you, let's just be real. This is challenging to anyone. There's only one break in the song for your legs. I gotta be honest, this song has grown on me because of the 3/4, 6/8, 4/4 thing. Also the way that the shuffle is mixed in. It's great to see someone give this a shot. Keep up the good work!

try Dog Boots by Virgil. Burns those calves like nothing else and it's non fucking stop (except that one second beat in the middle of the song lol)
this and "Bleed" have to be the most relentless songs on your legs.. awesome job for surviving!
I love that, as complicated as this song is, you still manage to mouth along " 'emon of" at 2:10
The control in this cover is incredible, great job!!
this is the still the best drum cover on youtube of this song
I think that if you play this with side swipes or heel toe is a lot easier than this so much respect to Troy to be able to play it THE HARDEST WAY possible.
Absolutely bodied this. Fantastic cover, sir!

UNREAL job man
This is exactly why I want to get my own cover of this going. It's a total endurance nightmare at mid tempo. 150-175 is probably the hardest tempo for me (and probably most people at that). Great cover man!
It's just now dawned on me how great of song this is to warm up the legs with...

Fascinating to discover this video today, after having followed Troy for about 4-5 years now, and seeing just how far his career has come since these days. Also gives some insight into how in shape he is too lol, this stuff is such an intense workout. Absolutely awesome 😎 👍
Your sense of timing is exquisite. Certainly the best cover I've seen of this song,. Perfection is a hard thing to quantify correctly in music as perfection is far from what a drum machine would resolve. Anyway, I present exhibit A. A Perfect Meshuggah Cover by A Showoff. Well bloody done.

You're amazing! This song is crazy. The repetition gets you messed up. But you did it. Great work man.
My legs ache just from watching that! That, my lord, is very impressive drumming!
Well done man!!! Thats awesome!!!
The calves don't really get used much in double kick applications. You use the front muscles of the leg more than the back.
You nailed it dude! Haake would approve!
Troy.... You are The dude!!!!
Killer drumming on killer song!!!!!
Troy makes this look easy it's not human I swear.
