Meshuggah - Nebulous (live)

Музыка

Augusta, 26/10/2002 - Meshuggah opening up for Tool!
Drowned in this screaming silence
Embraced by shadows, they tear me
The wormholes free my eyes
The blood boils - it knows
My thoughts burn as minds liquefy, vaporize
Reality scorched by this fixed state
All beginnings slain by ends
I seep down into the black to breathe
Drifting to merge with the past
My tongue licks the residue of the future
Bitter taste, the wombs of claws call me
Filth rips them open. The stillborn start to move
Lidless eyes twitching beneath a sheet of rot
They reach out, they want to kiss - It matters not
[In dreams it speaks to me of the truth that means reality]

I saw them this same year when they were headlining and had Strapping Young Lad opening for them. It was mind blowing regardless of the light show being fairly mundane compared to what they have now. They were still sort of underground at this point (at least in the USA) and playing smaller venues, but they blew everyone away. I honestly don't think they played to a click track yet at this point and I remember they had a crew member who'd manually press buttons to the music for their light show, which was pretty epic as well because it was done live instead of programmed. Either way, Meshuggah rules.

I do have to wonder how many Tool fans hated this. Meshuggah is really fucking heavy but once you get past it if you're not into metal or those vocals, you realize how complex and incredible the music is. Even the timing of the words. It's all gears turning to form an amazing machine. It's insane that they play the setlists they do. But yeah, saw some people leaving for a break there lol

I first saw Meshuggah live in 2002 here in Detroit when they were promoting the Nothing album and had Strapping Young Lad opening for them (probably the tour after this one because they were headlining...) They were playing this song (along with Chaosphere, Destroy Erase Improve, and Contradictions Collapse/None EP material) and it was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. This was back when they were a much smaller and somewhat underground band here in the USA. They still had the old bass player and a fairly mundane light show compared to what they have today, but they put on an amazing/flawless show regardless. Meshuggah are easily the tightest and most skilled live performers out there in my opinion, at least as far as heavy metal. I've been obsessed with this band since I was in high school and first came across the "New Millenium Cyanide Christ" music video (as well as an old video file called "Meshuggah The Movie") that was floating around a P2P file sharing client in the good ol' dial-up internet days of the late 90's, so this was an awesome blast from the past to see them play this rare song in the same setting I saw them in 20+ years ago as a teenager. Thanks for posting.

I wish they played this live instead of Lethargica, it's easily their most chilling song. Gotta love that old Nevborn/Pod Pro sound. No idea how they pulled it off live with 7 strings here. You can hear how unstable it is.

@@magistermilitum1206 The tuning and intonation of the instrument. The Nevborn 7 strings were a really odd scale length of 26" from nut to saddle unlike their current Ibanez custom models that are 29.4"/28" and 27". The strings will have been incredibly loose too. You can hear how out of tune it sounds at times and on the clean break you can hear how loose the strings are.

I feel like the setlist on the last tour of 2022/2023 was kind of weak, but it might simply be because they were promoting the new Immutable album and have just too much material to choose from. Their songs are very long, and maybe they didn't have time to play as many songs, but I feel like they could have booked longer shows and threw in some old school material for the old school fans... They didn't play anything from Chaosphere or Contradictions Collapse/None EP, and "Future Breed Machine" was the only song from Destroy Erase Improve that they played... But with that said, I noticed on this last tour they were playing Catch 33's "Mind's Mirrors/In Death/In Life" at every show which is a really cool and unusual song for them to play. Now if only they would play "Shed" live again from that same album. They always put on an amazing show, but I get bummed out when they don't play anything from Chaosphere (because that was the first album I bought of theirs and I love "New Millennium Cyanide Christ" as well as "Neurotica") and I really like their 90's material as well.

Meshuggah's bassist has a 5 string tuned to drop A# (A#, F, A#, D# G#) the bass plays in the same octave as the guitars when they play their 8 string stuff in F but he plays an octave lower when they play stuff in the 7 string territory around A#. What you heard was him playing an octave lower for that part which really emphasizes it and gives it oomph
