MESA/Boogie Tone Summit - John Petrucci/Doug West - Dream Theater Guitar Tones History

Музыка

John Petrucci has been using Mesa amplification for over 30 years, and Mesa amplifiers have been featured on nearly every Dream Theater album made. During a Tone Summit on November 14, 2016, John joined Mesa R & D Director, Doug West at the Guitar Sanctuary Performance Hall in McKinney, Texas for a night of discussion about tone, John’s Mesa signature amp - the JP-2C - and the amps behind the tones of various Dream Theater songs over the years.
John and Doug discuss approaches to dialing in sounds and some of the history behind the JP2C signature project, while John shares tracks from his library of Dream Theater sounds and then plays those riffs through his JP-2C rig for comparison.
It was a great night of stories, helpful hints, and Tone. Our thanks to John and his tech Maddi Schieferstein for taking the time for this event. Also, big thanks to Clint Franzen and George Fuller from the Guitar Sanctuary for hosting.
The guitar for this event was recorded with John Petrucci’s Signature Ernie Ball Music Man JP 16 six and seven string guitars into stereo JP2C heads and two Rectifier 4x12 Traditional cabinets. Mic’d with a Sennheiser 421 and a Beyer Dynamic 160 on one side and a AER AR22 and an SM57 on the other cab with a stereo pair of Earthworks QTC-50 Room mics blended in at 10% of the final mix.

I know your mission is to inspire musicians to play their best and I have to say, you have done exactly that. Words cannot describe how much you have inspired me to do my favorite thing in the whole world, and that's to play guitar. Thank you again. I cannot wait until I can budget for a JP-2C. Hey Boogie, I am planning on getting the Mark V because I am in love with the chunck and definition of the Mark llc+. Does this amp replicate that tone well? I've heard it on youtube, but that comes thru to my Mackies and is miced from your source. The question better answered - Does the tone that John Petrucci get out of the Mark V in the video in 2010 accurate in a live application? IOW: Does the Mark V live sound resemble the tone he got in the video, Mark IIc+ish? I ask cause I can't afford the JP-2c. And I know he played a V a while back and got that killer bone shimmering tone. I play percussively and fairly fast. I actually love the Rectifier's Whining Grind about the same as the c+, but it's a little too wide of a dynamic range and alot of gritty for the speed. Thanx, Mesa, later, Jason

Great questions, Jason. The reason we did the 2010 Mark vs original C+ video was to show how close the two amps actually are to one another. We didn't get insanely scientific to make sure that the pot values were all matched by setting them with a meter instead of just looking at them... or changing tubes to make sure they were exactly the same, etc... Because... THE TONE IS LITERALLY IN THERE! :) There are lots of different versions of C+ out there, and there are plenty of things that can be different from one amp to the next, but you might ask yourself, who would be the most qualified to decide what parts and circuits need to be employed to be able to say this sound is a C+? And who has skin in the game to deliver on that call? The Mark V delivers a C+ sound that reflects THE C+ preamp and a Simul-Class power amp, and it does it in spades. THEN... you have eight other modes to explore and enjoy. The Mark V is an insane amp for those who are into an amp with that much to offer, it delivers on the tones and then offers up a bunch of other amazing stuff like a legit Mark I tone, Lone Star AND Mark style cleans, A killer Tweed mode, (which on 10 watts and gain cranked with humbeucker is an insane Indy rock sound). Killer Brit sounds in Edge and Crunch (play these modes LOUD). Anyway - JP2C is a BEAST of an amp. Mark V is slightly less beastly in terms of punch compared to the JP2C, but only because it's Simul-class power section and not pure Class A/B like the JP2C. Bottom line - Mark IIC+ mode in the Mark V is legit. And all the other stuff in a Mark V is gravy after that if you really want to have the C+ thing on hand. Let us know what you think and good luck in your search! :)

im sooo glad I found a mark 2C+ from 1984... sooo terribly lucky; brilliant amp... and who would pass on one with a road case for a measly $300!... I had to do several repairs starting with removing animal urine from the grill cloth; removing several decades of dust; a complete cap job (11 capacitors) and new set of sliders all bought from mesa... eventually, and hopefully M Bendinelli as his initials are all over it, the the folks at boogie will graciously revisit the amp , and go through the circuit for any and all components that are "out of spec"... according to them perhaps now less than $200 as I have done a lot of the typical "tune up" issues... best amp I own regardless of the price! jp

Great question, Alex - That was indeed a Lone Star 2x12 with a matching stained maple front panel and inlaid Boogie panel to pair with a JP-2C limited head. Thanks for watching and good eye! :)

White amp+cabin looks great. Can you please give us the name of colors (cabinet, front panel, grille, piping, corners, handle) for custom white amp+cabin that is in the left. Thanks.

When he plays the example of As I Am from Train of Thought, he adjusts settings on two amps. Question: Is JP using his JP2C, and then for each example also playing through a Rectifier, Roadking, actual Mark IIC+, Mark IV, and Mark V for comparison to his JP2C?

How do you like it? I've never had owned an amp that did everything I needed it to without help. The 5:25 is my holy grail. I run it through a 4x12 and it murders my 100w Blackstar and 200w Randall. Just wish it had separate clean and crunch. Gonna need a jp2c I suppose. Time to sell my harley.

Vinnie Conklin I’m actually in the same boat haha the 5:25 does everything I need on its own except have a third channel for leads/crunch.
