The Mesa has more grind to it which is crazy awesome! The 5150 has a lot more gain to it. For me the go to amp for Lead guitar is the 5150. For Rhythm is going to the Badlander for the gritty rectifier distortion tones 💀

Eh, they benefit from a Tubescreamer being on for sure. I remember I used mine for rhythms on a track, and forgotten I'd turned my TS9 off, and when I listened back, I was like "There's something underwhelming about this..." It was lacking that bite that OD pedals give. Had to re-do the tracks.

@@Nick-rf5we that wasn't actually what I meant to say with my comment, but I'll tell you this: Marten Hagström said he tracked Immutable using the preamp or a 100w EVH III into a mesa roadster power amp driving EVH cabs. So I wasn't too far off with my statement.

I actually prefer the Mesa Boogie, however slightly. They're both dope, but the palm-muted chugs sound better on the Badlander. The 5150 just sounds a little brittle to me when chugging. I'd like to try panning one of each to each side - they probably sound great together.

Nice comparison. I own a 5150 IIIS and a Tube Screamer in front of the third channel isn’t really necessary even with the gain below 12 o‘clock. The third channel has more than enough gain stages and diode clipping. For the Badlander it makes sense to get rid of some of the bassy flubbyness. The second channel of the Stealth is really what distinguishes it from the basic 5150 III, since it’s first gain stage is the first triode of the third channel with a different coupling cap and voltage dividers following.

Tremonti does use pairs of amp. Last time i saw a stage it was a Dual Rectifier and a Diezel. Parkway Drive does use the 5150 for their base sound. But they highly modify the amp befor they capture it with the Kemper, and sadly they don't tell people what they do by now.

IMO the Mesa has plenty of natural low end that really wouldn't benefit from a resonance control, so I don't consider that a negative. The EVH benefits from it because it's a little thinner by design. With a boost, it's the opposite... the Mesa benefits more from a boost and the EVH has so much gain on tap that it doesn't need any help other than maybe to tighten it up a bit. Both are crushing but I lean towards the Mesa (own both as well as other Mesas and EVH's).

  • @MRxr400
    @MRxr400 Жыл бұрын

the thing about the mesa was the mids grunt and i recon it would sit better in the mix, with something to tighten the bottom end. i'm of the opinion that it's easier to take something out of a sound than to add something thats not naturally there. to me the evh was scooped and tight but lacked personality.

Having an EVH5150III 50 Stealth and a Mesa Dual Rectifier, I can't choose between those guys ! They are extremely complementary for all type of Metal stuff, even if the Mesa is more versatile. But the precision and the brutality of the EVH fits perfectly with the darker and wilder side of the Mesa... Last but not least, as Ola said, the EVH is much easier to dial with to get a very good sound while the Mesa requires a little work...

EVH 5150 III 100w el34 & 100w stealth have a secret function. Blue gain pot effects a gain structure of red channel. Try change blue gain while you are in red channel. When pot is higher it cuts the bass and gain is stronger. When pot is lower bass are boosted and gain reduced. For almost same gain structure as 50w version or original 100w you must set blue channel gain pot on 3,5.

I'd prefer the Mesa even if I was into drop tuned metal. To me it just sounds better. Maybe I'm not a big fan of the "modern" metal voicing so much. Yeah, I'm sure of it.

Mesa for me (if I could afford it) EVH sounds much thinner and compressed to my ear

Badlander for me, sounds more balanced overall. The 5150 III's pre-gain shaping boosts the high mids a bit too much, and the final tone sounds a tad blanketed.

the EVH is half the price of a badlander here in europe so just a no brainer for me... but i also prefere the EVH 5150III 50w stealth and the good old much underrated roadster 🦾🦾

Both sound amazing. The Mesa, for these settings anyway, has a darker metal tone and the EVH has a little more brightness to it. I'm sure the EVH can be EQ'd to get that darker tone but I think overall you have more diversity with the EVH. I bought an Iconic and could not believe what a wide range of tones it has. My Marshall JCM 900 and my modded Blue Voodoo are nowhere near the Iconic for range. Good job Ola!

Hej Ola! Could you show us the proper way to capture a speaker IR. Always been curious what the process is like. Love this new format btw🤘🔥.

TS into Badlander or 5150 just on it's own, 5150with no OD is my preference because it's more grindy.

A year ago I had to decide between the two of them. I took the EVH though I also very much like the Badlander tone. But the EVH is not just cheaper its also more "my" tone ;)

Both great. I'd have to go with the Badlander.

Badlander sounds like the world is ending neatly. 5150 sounds like the world is ending up in chaos.
