Merrillville, IN Whelen Vortex Siren Test - 4/6/19

Ғылым және технология

After the Purdue Model 5, we decided to jam over to Lake County in hopes that they would do attack, but of course they only did alert. This Vortex is located on Lincoln Highway across from Deep River Waterpark. Back in August of 2005, I (Noie) saw this siren activate for a tornado warning from atop a water slide at the park. Everyone in the park had to cram into the locker rooms for the better part of an hour. It went off several times, first in alert and then in wail if I remember correctly. Sirens in Lake County are tested on the first Saturday of the month at noon.

Don’t tell me Lake County is pulling a Jackson County. Seems like their test signal is always different.

I have always wondered, what are the fins on the vortex for?

  • @seanjuth

Supposedly, if the rotator breaks, it allows the siren to rotate in the wind

@@seanjuth Why would it need to do that?

@@HappyJigg because the siren shoots sound in the direction it's pointing, it rotates to send the sound in all directions

It's there for aerodynamics. These older Vortexes are belt driven. The fin does nothing for rotation but rather helps balance it out. The newer gear driven rotor Vortexes don't require these fins.

The fins are just so redundant. If the rotator died, I doubt that tiny little fin would be able to rotate a siren
