This song pulsates with the spirit of joy and abandon that the 16th century saint-poet Meera Bai must have felt in embracing a life of fakiri, shedding all the material and emotional baggage of being a queen cloistered in a palace.

Mooralala Marwada and dholak player Parbat Jogi capture this spirit through their joy in this moment of making music together. Mooralala belongs to a lineage of Meghwal singers, who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala says he’s an 11th generation singer, and that his ‘santaar’ (tambura) must be at least 130 years old! When he first heard the sound of the tambura, he recalls that he was 8 years old, and he was so enchanted, he couldn’t sleep! Currently his 12-year-old daughter Nandini, learns from and sings with him. He moves with ease between nirguni bhajans, traditional folk songs and Sufiana kalaam. Contact him at +91-87585-51661

Marulala is a Sindhi folk and Sufi singer from Kutch district, that remained historically and culturally an integral part of our Sindh before partition of India and Pakistan. Marulala my Sindhi Sufi brother sings in Kaafi or Waai form of singing, that was invented by Shah Latif Bhittai. Marulala also frequently sang poetry of Sufi poet of Sindh, like Baghat Kabir, Meeran Bai, Tulsi Das, Sachal Sarmast, etc. , which you can watch on youtube . . . But, sorry to say, no one mentions these facts from India in their comments ! !

Atif Khan sahib you are a true lover of MUSIC AND POETRY. I thought that I am one of those who can appreciate nearly all kinds & genres of music of any origin, western or eastern.
