Merle Travis "Sixteen Tons" + "Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette"

Wow, what a piece of nostalgia. I was looking for a rendition of Sixteen Tons that didn't sound jolly, and this came close. And the cigarette song? It was certainly a different time!

This is golden. Good, appreciative crowd too. Wish I coulda been there!
nobody plays like ol Merle . I LOVED THAT THANKS FOR THIS GREAT !!!!
What a great story about Chet Atkins! Good old Merle Travis, talented as anything and self-deprecating humour with it!
At the supper table one night Daddy told us about the company store. I asked him why can't they go somewhere else? "There WAS no other place", he answered.

this was the only song my father ever sang.
One of the greatest, most influential guitarists of all time. Thom Bresh said he was the most influential guitarist of the twentieth century. I reckon Thom was right.

Got more out of his thumb and index finger than most bands with three guitar players in the line-up.
Merle was huge on the radio back in the 30s 40s.Outstanding guitar player.
Chet the ultimate studio guitarist
You load a great contribution and what do you get? One more contribution and a one more long wait. St.Peter don't you call me cause I owe my soul to bring it to people so much great songs.
Travis made fun of his singing, but my favorite part is that you can HEAR he’s smiling 🎙️ 🎸
Love anything with Merle
"16 Tons" was the only song my father ever sang.
The king of it.
Love that song
Thank you for posting this. Hilarity and a great performance all at the same time of two tunes highlighting problems. I also like the Southern Raised cover of Sixteen Tons, among many great versions.
Classy act classy audience.
Back When People were Real
Great song aside, I loved the Chet Atkins side story!

That is his 1952 Gibson Super 400 CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish). Gibson considered it their flagship guitar for many years. The 400 was actually first made in 1934 as an acoustic guitar, but later (1939} they added a factory installed diagonal pickup, making it one of the first electric guitars. The reason it’s so big is that before there was amplification, those guitars were important for use in big bands, so the guitarist needed an instrument loud enough to keep up with the band. It has an 18-inch bout (widest part of the guitar), making it the largest until Epiphone made the Emperor in 1935, which was a half-inch wider. The guitar was always expensive because it’s an actual carved top, and took much longer to make than a lot of their other guitars. He had several 400s, but the ‘52 was his favorite. This guitar is on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame museum in Nashville.

Oh, my!
Upvote for that hat alone!
Excellent❤❤❤
yes sir!!
It's weird how he had time issues with Sixteen Tons and then suddenly is .... totally free and in control with the cigarette song :D

He's deliberately toying with the rhythm of the "Sixteen Tons" lyric, but he's not fully in control of his phrasing so it doesn't sound as good.

Wait, St Peter, wait! Do you get smoke breaks in heaven?
He put Saint Peter into both these songs, maybe his two biggest.
