Merengue Haitian, Havana, 2012
The Merengue is a musical genre and dance that originated in the Dominican Republic, a Caribbean island. It started to become well known around 1850, specifically in the northern region of El Cibao, and today its popularity has spread to other nations such as Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the U.S. cities of New York and Miami.
Its origins are very vague. One hypothesis states that the origin of the Merengue was the result of a dance called the Upa Habanera, which has a step called the Merengue. Another staes that it could be an adaptation of a Haitian dance which is called the Méringue.

Meringue (Haiti) and Merengue (Dominican Republic) is a music genre and dance that originated in the western part of the Island of Saint Domingue (Haiti) in the 1800s. The Franco-Haitians took it to Cuba and other places. This video shows it all. Not the Dominican brought it to Cuba but Haitian.
We still dance like that in Haiti today. It is such a pleasure watching the dancers dancing with such grace and elegance with nice smiley faces back in Haiti. I've got to learn these beautiful folkloric Haitian dances. So nice😍😍😍😍😍
Méringue is not only a dance, but it's also a musical genre from Haiti.
Haiti created their own language , country , music, culture... This is why dominocan Santos are jealous..
Wow! this old sounding Haitian 🇭🇹 Meringue sounds better and more complex than modern Dominican Merengue 🇩🇴
It's definitely from Haïti, no question about it. Really nice by the way
One can not label origin of a dance without consideration of the music. The instruments that compose the different rythmic beats make up the diffetent styles of Merengue. Haiti has its own cultural originality. The music has slower tempos, and the slow beat is the main element in this type of style. It is called Meringue, Not merengue. The Dominican Merengue has a faster tempo, and has a faster rythm composed of a faster beat, combined with string instruments. Each dance style has its own originality. Meringue is from Haiti, and is a folk style. Dominican Republic has the style of Merengue most Latin American countries dance to. Haiti may have started a style of merengue, but it is not the dance or musical style that has been accepted by most countries. There are many styles, and origins of music, and dance styles. People who say that their country is where a certain dance originated from need to educate themselves on the different styles of musical composition, and dance styles.
Merengue is from Haiti , not the dominican republic
J'adore ka' palé créole là....ou ka fe crié moin'
This is how Merengue used to be in colonial time in Haiti when it first created and haitians brought Merengue to Cuba during Haiti's historical revolution. Later the Dominicans adopted Merengue but it was invented by us Haitians not Dominicans. Check the facts please. They do exist. It looks like Rumba is also from Haiti and brought to Cuba as well by us. Or Haitians who migrated to Cuba during Haiti's Revolution and early 19th century seem to have created Rumba also.

There need to be a correction, The island of Hispagnola is divided into Spanish that became the Dominican Republic and French Colonized Haiti, that became the country of Haiti.
what's the name of the singer?

What language are they speaking? Spanish, Haitian Creole, or French?
remember our ancestor come from the same part of africa the congo where our instruments originated and haiti and dominican republic is one island.
This is not the same as Dominican merengue. The heart of merengue is the drum (tambora) the tambora is from DR. We do however have Haitian influences in some of our songs, but not only Haitian, we also have African, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Venezuelan, Colombian influences etc..
Beautiful congo congo beautiful that's the meaning
