MERCURY-REDSTONE 1 - Launch failure (1960/11/21)
Mercury-Redstone 1 (MR-1) was the first flight test of the Redstone rocket in Project Mercury.
Intended as an unmanned sub-orbital spaceflight, it was launched on November 21, 1960 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
The launch failed in a peculiar fashion with the rocket shutting down just after liftoff. As such it became know as the "four-inch flight".
Presented in real-time, with side-by-side views of the rocket.

This is the real life counterpart of forgetting to check staging in KSP.
Not sure why this is so amusing - Escape tower "I'M OUTTA HERE"! - Capsule "Well I guess lets throw the parachute out"
Fun fact: because the rocket was still fully fueled, but with the parachutes dangling on the side it was really feared that a wind could catch the parachutes and tip the whole thing over that would result in an explosion. There were multiple ideas proposed to defuse the situation. The craziest one perhaps was somebody proposing to shoot holes in the tanks so the liquid propellant would boil off and escape quicker. It is from this incident that the flight director doctrine 'let's not make things worse by guessing' originated from.
So cute!
This is the most hilarious launch failure, but the most nerve-pulling one, because the spacecraft was literally a sitting bomb.
I'm reading "The Right Stuff" by Tom Wolfe and there's a humorous description of this failed launch. I can see why.
This launch fail was so hilarious they actually included it in the 1983 film “The Right Stuff”
Well, the escape tower certainly escaped.
Revert to VAB
"I swear this never happened before"
For some reason that I can't explain, this video reminds me of several of my ex-boyfriends.
Exploded too soon. Sometimes I have that problem too
The launch failed, the launch escape system failed...be blessed there's still a rocket!
The "thooo" sound of the parachute deployment makes me laugh.😂😂 Just icing on the cake of a terrible comic non-explosive failure.
Humble beginnings
“It happens”, she said.
POV: You forgot the staging on your ksp build.
In the cradle of aviation we own the MR-1 Capsule
Read the book "Apollo" by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox to get the full story on what actually happened to cause such an unusual failure.
we won't be going to space today
