Awesome!!!! I have an 1987 80HP mercury. Cylinder 1 started misfiring and I found out the rectifier was melted. Replaced the rectifier and that corrected the misfire but now the voltage is staying up to 17.5 I have replaced the stator and another rectifier/ regulator. Still 17.5 volts went back to the old rectifier and now I am seeing 60VAC from the stator and 60DC out of the stator. I am thinking I am overlooking something, just haven’t figured out what I am missing.

I have the small rectifier just installed a 16 amp stator wanting to convert to the voltage regulator rectifier do you need the grey 3 prong part or could I use the rectifier I have and just add the 6 wire one not sure what the purpose of the 3 prong part with the 6 wire setup

You do have to hook the other red wire to the starter solenoid,it's the sensing wire,if you don't,it will only put out about 7.5 volts.13.5 after I hooked up second red wire

thanks this is the only video i was able to find which showed the system I have on my 1990 90HP Mariner outboard. I also ordered the the small rectifier with the 3 posts and then got confused as it didn't look like the one I had on my motor. Now I know what to look for . Thank you very much this was very helpful. Did you measure your voltage output when you're cruising at higher RPM? Does it stay at around 14.5?

It should be around 13.5 to 14.5 yes.

I have a 1989 90 H.P. 3 cylinder 2 stroke and have had the same level of confusion with trying to troubleshoot my battery charging issue. This video was very helpful in helping me sort through a few things. The unfortunate thing for me is that the voltage regulator part no. is obsolete at this point. Curious as to what the part number was for the regulator rectifier that you installed.

@@crankshaftandco thanks for sharing. My current voltage regulator has a 6 wire set up. Two reds, two yellows, a black and gray like the first unit in your video. I am curious as to why you went with the 5 wire set up instead. You had mentioned that the other red lead is only used for sensing which I didn't fully understand. Also how has the regulator / rectifier replacement performed for you. The other difference is your terminal block is black where as mine is gray. Curious whether or not I need to change this part out to be black vice gray. Not sure how a terminal block can go bad but I am throwing dice at this point. I have purchased a 6 wire regulator and it is on its way. Looking at your ordered regulator / rectifier I am not sure how you connected the blue wire which appears to be coming from the harness. Also what type of stator is installed on your engine. This will help me as well I believe. Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to make sense of things on my end as well.

HI, I have the exact same motor, I have had a misfire on one cylinder for a while at Idle, and have decided it’s the stator, I am wondering if I need to change the rectifier/regulator as well, How do I test it before I order a new one, it does charge the battery

  • @crankshaftandco

I doubt if it's the stator.
