Mercury 4 Stroke 250 Pro XS Break In & How to Check the Oil

Several good things in this video, first the just updated break in procedure for the Mercury 4 Stroke 250 ProXS, I just got the email the morning I shot this video. Second, I could not find a video explaining how to check the oil on the new 4 Stroke, I knew where the dip stick was (duh) but I had heard you needed to trim the motor up and then down and spoke to service at Mercury Marine and got the exact procedure, outlined here. Also from our friends at Jones Marine in Texarkana a really simple fix to clear bow mounted Graph interference caused by your trolling motor.

Also today featuring the T-H Marine G-Force Troll Motor Jacket, really cleans up the look of your front deck by organizing your cables.

On the trolling motor fuse issue: What's causing the fuse to blow in the first place? If that issue is not resolved, how often might someone find the fuse blown and in need of replacement? Should I buy a bulk bag of 3A fuses?

txman201 yeah exactly. What’s causing a spike in amperes to blow a fuse? When voltage goes down amps go up. I’d like to know more about this.

@@Jcestanley I suspect the fuse is protecting a Ground wire running through the nonconductive shaft to the TM's lower unit. I'm just not certian what they are doing with that reference point inside the motor housing. One thing it isn't is a pole of the motor itself since it's only a light gauage wire with a 3A fuse. Many might assume the motor has a Ground connection, but a motor doesnt necessarily require "Ground" per se; it simply needs two connections to present a voltage potential. The motor is pulse-modulated, so both leads for the motor may be outputs of the PM controller board in the TM head. I may try speaking with MK to find out.

So the small wire is attached to one of the brush card screws and is grounding out the lower unit casing. A big deal with marine electronics is common grounds and that wire runs back to the control board of the trolling motor to the ground to help neutralize interference. I can’t tell you exactly why it blows but it’s not a critical component it’s just a helpful deal.

@@taylorjohnson2608 thanks for confirming my suspicion. Now inquiring minds would feel better knowing what not to do so the fuse doesn't open.

Thanks Ken, I have read my manual a couple times and circled back to your video a few times but have had two different Merc. dealers swear the first oil change has to be at 20 hours.... everything I read is in line with your video.

Ken good point on letting the motor warm up before getting up to speed. On another utube post they said for a Yamaha SHO first start let the Temp get up to 90 deg before backing off trailer. I do this on my Yamaha but have not checked the manual yet to see if anything is noted about warming up the engine. I guess i should pull out the manual.

Hey ken do you use the 45 inch shaft or 52? I can’t seem to decide I’ve always fished with a 45

Shorter, the only time it's an issue if you have a guy 250+ on the back deck in heavy water the prop will jump out some. The long shaft gets in the way shallow power fishing, I've had both and just prefer the short one.

Have you had a Mercury mechanic check to make sure you are getting 100% throttle? Sounds like that may be your issue

There’s lots he fells to talk about when it come to the new 4 stroke.. I own one myself thats 11 months old with 300 hours, but in turn i fish everyday running the Toyota’s and full time guide.. I noticed very soon into this motor that it varied in speed from day to day sometimes up to 8 mph 🤷‍♂️🥴 never knew what you were going to get each day, no to mention it was unusual drinking oil waaaaay more than I thought it should be (adding a quart every week and one time 2.5 quarts) seriously 2.5 🥴🤔…. Come to find out with the oil burning issue, if you start the motor with it tucked under the boat they say something about oil getting on top of the valves or lifters something, I’m no mechanic so I had no idea but i started starting it in a different trim location and resolved that for the most part.. Still burns more then it should in my eyes….Also there’s several filters underneath the cowling that must be cleaned often, know one EVER told me about a.. Fuel filter number 1, water separator filter 2 and I want to say there’s one more I can’t think of.. Buuuuut any of these could put the engine into guardian mode which in turn retards the engine’s rpms… But what’s strange is, it may knock your speed back to say 60mph or so.. Theirs ALOT more about this motor to be talked about then what Mr.Ken goes over.. Not knocking him what so ever, just didn’t know at the time of the videos…. I’ve run Mercury’s my whole life, owning 8 or 9 brand new ones with little to no issues until now… Honestly if I could do it all over for 2021 I would’ve purchased the SHO and I hate to say that but it is what it is look at it from a business standpoint…. Great video Mr. Kenn as always 👊
