Mercury 1.0L 4 Cyl. 60 HP Conversion (See description for full details)

Welcome back as always,
Today we are taking a deep dive into the items necessary in order to complete a successful 40/50 HP to 60 HP conversion on a #mercurymarine and going over their respective locations. This conversion can be done successfully on both engines AS LONG as they are 4 cylinder 995cc engines. This mod cannot be done to the smaller 3 cylinder 40 HP engines.
Items required to complete a successful 60 HP conversion free of issues:
- 60 HP PCM new or used (used is preferred as it does not require intial PCM setup at a Mercury authorized dealer and is generally found much cheaper
- Restrictor ring removal
- Propeller change out of the OE Blackmax
Propeller pitch size will vary based upon what is required for your particular load and I HIGHLY recommend a stainless steel preferably of the Mercury brand in order to stay compliant within the specified RPM range of 5500-6000 RPM. I currently run 6100-6200 with my 4 blade Trophy Sport 10.625 x 14 pitch with zero issues, and no Guardian intervention, so you will be safe to be slightly higher. Bear in mind, a jackplated setup will increase RPM by about 100 - 150 RPM of whatever the propeller would spin nominally at WOT otherwise.
The 995cc #mercury powerhead is based off the 70 HP #yamaha powerhead and the F70 is specified to make its horsepower at 5800 RPM as per the Yamaha website, so I STRONGLY recommend you stay on the hot side over the lower side of the RPM powerband. Do not be afraid of high RPM. It is required to make power and to keep from lugging your lower gearbox and decreasing its overall service life.
For help sizing your prop, I would be happy to help if you do not know what to do, feel free to drop me a comment and we'll go from there.
I will need your CURRENT:
- Max RPM at wide open throttle
- Max speed at wide open throttle
- Current prop pitch
IMPORTANT SIDENOTE: The 40 HP 4 cylinder version model Mercury outboards come equipped standard with a 2.33:1 Command Thrust PCM. I did not realize this at the time of making this video so the requirements for your engine change. In order to successfully complete this conversion, you will need to obtain a 60 HP Command Thrusts/ Bigfoot variant PCM. Propeller pitch will also vary from what is shown in this video!
Extras:
I did not discuss this in the video, and it is optional, but for those running Champion copper spark plugs, I recommend NGK part number: BPR6EIX/ 6637 spark plugs for longest service life/ hottest spark/ easier ignitability for coils.

    Thanks for posting this. My classic xl has the 50hp on it. I found a bargain ecu from a 60hp, that was being parted out because of damage, and removed the bushing, and changed prop. Better performance all around.

    Thanks for the video, this is what got me researching everything I could find to convert my 50 HP (4 Stroke EFI) to a 60 HP and let me tell you there is a lot of misinformation out there. I found a brand new 60 HP ECU for a decent price, removed the restrictor and the difference was noticeable. Huge improvement! Brought my 16 1/2 ft Lowe fishing machine to life. Tested a few props and settled on a 14-pitch aluminum 3 blade. Gives me 38 mph @ 5980 RPM. The same 14 pitch without the mod would take minutes for the boat to plane. Still may try a few different props in the future. I would also like to comment on installing a brand new ECU for this engine. A lot of people say that dealer setup is required when they are brand new. I can 100% confirm this is false. No setup required. I installed directly on the engine and away I went, no issues, alarms, fault codes, nothing. Mercury Vesselview recognizes the ECU as a 60 HP and displays all information as it should including firmware version. The only issue with installing the new ECU is it will reset your hour meter to zero. I really don't mind that as I don't intend on selling this boat and I know what my previous hours were on my old ECU. Again, thank you very much, worth every penny to do this conversion. Cheers!

    Get you a hydraulic 6" jackplate for it and you'll see a notable difference in both RPM and speed as well. You should gain 150 on the top end and you may even be able to turn a 14 pitch stainless Vengeance. Speed increase will be notable!

    Great video here, very concise and detailed. Im reminded of the days of the Yamaha 150-200 2 strokes, where we just changed a few things like the carb jetting and timing curve, along with different reeds. We also could shave the heads a bit to up the compression but that was usually too much cost and effort for the 4-6 hp difference it made. On the newer Mercs, I did wonder if the cams are different for the 40/50 to the 60, that would be something a competent marine mechanic could do if it was worth the cost and effort, Happy Holidays!!

    Happy holidays! The 40 HP standard geared outboard is a 737CC engine and the 50/60 standard gearcase outboard is a 1.0L 995CC engine. They are two totally different blocks, but the command thrust lineup is the one that neuters the 1.0L down in order to accomplish the advertised horsepower rating. The CT/ Bigfoot series is the one that is more flexible as far as conversion capabilities are concerned.

    I have a 2021 tracker V guide 16 . Im not spending a thousand dollars for a few hps However I did what every Nascar restrictor plate racer did. I DRILLED OUT THE HOLES IN THE RESTRICTOR PLATE UNTIL my ecu control picked up on the extra air then I sealed up the hole. I went from 32 mph to 35 mph with a much better hole shot. I do not know how long or how well that will work out for you. The 1.0L class and ECM70's that Mercury runs operate off a speed density style tune. They are not capable of compensating for the extra air you add by modifying or removing the restrictor. What you did introduced a lean condition and the PCM is not capable of compensating for that extra airflow by adding the extra fuel needed to make the air fuel ratio correct. If you haven't engaged Guardian mode already due to this condition you may soon. I'd be surprised if it didn't ever give you a problem either soon, or down the road.

    Everything you said is correct. My service manual t though says 2008-2021 are same, with minor changes. I bet the Early year ECU would work too. One thing to test out, is the cowling I think is restricted for air flow. Make a run middle of day with cowling record top speed rpm, then without shutting off motor make same run, do you see a difference? I do for all my motors, theory is as motor hears up, it's sucking in water air and you lose a few rpm. Bigger motors not an issue they have displacement to overcome it, the little ones 1.0l and below I've seen this.

  • @extremeboating7347

    @extremeboating7347

    2 жыл бұрын

    The only reason why the early year PCM would not work is because the connectors required to connect are two versus the one large one that the later PCM's take. Running without the cowling might not be a bad idea just to see if there are any airflow changes. As the cowling on these motors do not have any openings to allow air through. I anticipate that it likely wouldn't make a difference since the way these are tuned, they take into account for lack of open airflow in their fixed airflow density tune. I'll give it a shot sometime anyway though, there's nothing to lose so why not?!

    No it does not. If you have a motor that is lazy out of the hole, you have an overprop issue, a motor height issue, or a transom angle issue. I can help you troubleshoot, but you will have to give me the year make and model rig you have, what hole the motor is mounted on, what pitch prop you have, and max RPM at wide open throttle you have as it is all relevant and important to optimizing performance out of the hole. Also, how fast would you say your holeshot is, seconds wise?

    I just answered this question 2 or 3 days ago so the following is a copy/ paste of what I wrote the other day: Every rig is different so I can recommend you a 15 pitch Vengeance or a 14 pitch Trophy Plus (both stainless) but the jury is out if your hull was built like mine was. If you find a 60HP PCM that is single plug 2013 or 2014 and up it will work as Mercury is still using the same Motohawk ECM70 that they were in 2020. Nothing has changed as of current and I know that because my 2024 ProXS is using the same single plug PCM that the 50's and 60's do. If you buy a brand new one you will be good to go as well, just plug it in and go. The only thing it will do is reset your hours.

Holeshot time? The same. Holding turn ability? The same. Steering? The same. Speed? The same AND faster than the four blade as well! The jackplate helped, yes. It changed the dynamics of the way the boat performs entirely. Everything feels much smoother, peppier, and it allows me to get into SUPER skinny water without having to deal with getting jammed up in sand bars or unnecessarily weeded up now. The mods aren't cheap, but the results obtained from them are 1000% worth it. It's a totally different boat compared to the way a standard Classic XL performs now. I hope this helps!

    This may have been a thing on previous gen models using the Motorola 555 PCM with the dual plugs. These new gen PCM's, however, use a speed density tune where they are incapable of adjusting to new airflow or fueling changes if they are made (i.e additional airflow being provided by removing the restrictor ring). I tried removing the restrictor ring myself and running it initially, but would consistently get shut down by the guardian feature. It was only until after I replaced the PCM that it stopped cancelling my runs out.

    Unfortunately for you guys, the procedure is not as straight forward with the 2.1L engines as it is the 1.0L's. the 2.1L (yours) requires the PCM, the prop, and if I remember correctly a larger throttle body and the cam(s) in order to step it up in power. It's not a very straight forward thing and will definitely require you tear into the engine as well as obtain other more expensive parts in order to complete the conversion. I wish I had a better answer for you, but it is not as black and white for your class engine as it is ours.

    So, because I have an older model, (2006) it turns out that many of the ECU are the same on the 50 hp and the 60 hp. According to my local marine mechanic up in here in Georgian Bay, you can check the serial number on the motor and the ECU and see if this is the case for your model. In my case it was. So, I simply removed the restrictor and have been cruising with and extra 400 rpm and an additional 4 mph. Thus I was able to simply remove the restrictor and with no issues whatsoever. My engine is on a 17 foot restored 1970s solid weld aluminum boat so the engine was a little undersized at 50hp and I only toped out at 31 mph and 5700 rpm. Now with the restrictor removed, I'm getting a better hole shot and it's far more responsive and I'm hitting 6200 rpm and 35 mph which is fast enough for me on the big waters of the Great Lakes. Perhaps those with older models are able to do this as well.

    Great video. Would I be able to do this mod on a 2006 40hp Bigfoot motor? I'm also thinking of putting a jack plate on it. Is the same thing true on the older carburetor model's by being able to either rejet the carburetors or get a set of the carburetors, the reason I ask is I have a 2003 50hp 2 stroke on a pontoon I recently purchased.

  • @extremeboating7347

    Yes it is possible to do a carb swap on the older models absolutely. You need to make sure that the 50 is a 995cc or whatever is equivalent to the 60 HP engines of those years. As for the 06 40 HP you need to make sure that it is a 995cc as well and that it is the same displacement as the 60 HP Bigfoot of that year, then you can do the restrictor ring removal/ PCM swap, and as a subsequent result of that extra airflow, run a much more aggressive prop tailored to the new HP output of the engine.

    Well, let's start simple. What's your current wide open throttle RPM, and what hole is the motor mounted on? I run a Trophy Sport stainless steel 4 blade. If you used to run slower now than you did before, were you running 3 blade or were you always running 4? If nothing has changed in the Spitfire propeller you have been using and all you did was replace it, then it's possible you got a factory defective unit. Also, what red cover are you talking about?

    @@antonioortega777 the red ring I had was because I had a de-tuned 60. It was a 50 HP version of it. Your speed and RPM is in line with the speeds that 175's normally see. The Spitfire inherently drops speed due to the extra blade present that 4 blades over their 3 blade counterparts.

    Do not try the mod. You will not run correctly at all despite doing the mod correctly and will probably throw all sorts of guardian alarms and codes. The 75 HP and 115 HP are two different animals entirely despite having the same power head. The 115 uses different camshafts and I believe may have larger valves than the 75 HP version. So despite sharing the same engine upper and lower blueprints, that's where it ends unless you are willing to pay for a new cylinder head off a 115 HP along with a new PCM and prop I would definitely not do it at all. Check the parts catalog for the PN of the cylinder head assembly and check to see if they have the same PN between the 75 and 115. Now the 75 to 90 HP... that may be something worth looking into possibly.

This being said, you seam to know about increasing Hp & props. Mine runs 41mph with stock aluminum prop. My 75hp 2 stroke is the same motor as the 90hp2 stroke, other than the carbs & prop. Question is if I change to a 90hp. What prop do you recommend? Also max hp is a 75hp, however 3 carbs will add zero weight & look no different. How fast do you think I will go. May add a manual jack plate also.

  • @extremeboating7347

    @extremeboating7347

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don't have enough information to be able to get you an accurate recommendation and even then the right prop for someone else's boat may not work the same for yours due to hull age and condition, there are so many factors including motor height which comes into play in the speed factor. If you do want to improve the output I always recommend a jackplate so your prop is not getting washed out by the hull due to motor proximity to the transom. Be aware that that may change the overall RPM output of the prop which if you are at the ragged edge with a new one will potentially put you over RPM. As for the prop that you want to replace I need some more information to be able to give you a more accurate recommendation. I have your speed obviously, but I need current RPM as well as the current pitch that it is. The X factor here is going to be the fact that you will be increasing HP and so the RPM you will be at may put you over or under if we over pitch or under prop you. If you can front the money for a hydro jackplate that will provide you with the most benefit on the fly due to your ability to change adjustability while you are running. If you have other means of communication or social media, I'd love to tackle this with you actively. Let me know.

Speed required to maintain plane drops from 22mph to 18 mph. I tried the boat with and without it back to back times consecutively just to make sure it wasn't placebo or it wasn't in my head and I was crazy.

    It would require a PCM, throttle body change out, camshaft(s) and maybe even a power head swap out. There is more to the 115's than just a simple tuning change and restrictor removal unfortunately despite the fact the 75 HP and 115 HP use the same 2.1L engine block. Their conversion would be a bit more intricate that our 1.0L block outboard conversions.

With that being said, however, you would need to grab a restrictor off a 40 HP version as it chokes down the throttle body opening to appropriately match the airflow that the 40 HP PCM is looking for. You would also need to prop down accordingly and you would also obviously need the PCM.

As far as the PCM itself if you find a 60HP PCM that is single plug 2013 or 2014 and up it will work as Mercury is still using the same Motohawk ECM70 that they were in 2020. Nothing has changed as of current and I know that because my 2024 ProXS is using the same single plug PCM that the 50's and 60's do. If you buy a brand new one you will be good to go as well, just plug it in and go. The only thing it will do is reset your hours.

    I got mine from a Mercury outboard salvage yard in the Midwest if I recall. I can't remember their name, but you can also try Picclick, as they do deep search of eBay for items that are not represented well on their website. Type in "Mercury 60 HP PCM" or even ECM as a substitute. Worse comes to worse, there is always new which might be a little more expensive, but it's guaranteed to be in working condition.

    There are various part numbers for the 60 PCM and all vary through the years despite all of them being the same with the exception of CT/ Bigfoot models. If there is any doubt, I recommend using the Mercury/Mariner parts catalog. The PCM is obtainable either brand new via Mercury or Quicksilver brand (you have to get these initially set up at an authorized Mercury dealer, however) or you can buy them used via a salvage yard if you can locate one. I would check eBay as well. They pop up on there relatively regularly. You just have to ensure they are single plug models as there is a variant from earlier years which has two plugs. For one lucky person who doesn't want to do much searching at all, I have access to a used 60 HP computer and can reach out to my connection if someone or yourself wants to buy it from them for relatively cheap.

Your static prop to pad prior to plane out should be about 5.625" (ie on the jackplate your motor should be mounted on the 2nd hole). You will need to pick up a 14 pitch and prior to any hydraulic jack plate lift you should see an RPM of about 6150 - 6200 at WOT prior to any prop re- workings done. If you need recommendations on where to send it I'd be happy to refer you to the place that did my work.

I had to get my 14 pitch modified to a 15 because it was slightly hot, but it's still not a true 15. If you want to go aluminum then a 3 blade 16 pitch Blackmax works, if not you can get a Spitfire in 15 pitch, and that's the largest pitch size they have for them, but you may be slightly hot if you go with one of those.

    Ouch. That's fairly low speed. Your motor is most likely buried or the prop pitch for it is not correct. What hole are you mounted at the transom and what pitch prop are you running on it? There is another factor which comes into play here and that is the shape of your hull and/ or the age of the hull may not be allowing for good speed, that in which case there is nothing you can do about that. Does the bottom of your hull have any dents or issues with it at all? You probably could gain another 3-4 mph, but I'd have to know the answer to all of the questions above. You may very well be topped out due to your hull efficiency. It just depends what you got going on.

    You may need to investigate if the head is different on the 90 like it is on the 75 HP 2.1L class because if it is it's not as easy as upping the HP and would require you perform a reflash on your current PCM in order to compensate for the lack of airflow (at least this is the case on the 75HP model). That cannot be done now due to Merc's cease and desist on all major tuners out there, so you would have to know someone who is capable of performing it. IF the head design and setup is the same on the 90/115 HP models, however, it would be as easy as removing the restrictor, replacing the PCM with a 115 HP version and then replacing your prop according to the RPM you need to be.

There are no further power mods you can do to the 60 HP to make it be more powerful, however, depending on the rig you have, there are certain other things you can do to optimize the power the 60 delivers and really fine tune the overall performance of it to make it have really stellar holeshot times, and overall optimal utilization of HP it has.

  • @extremeboating7347

    @extremeboating7347

    2 жыл бұрын

    The year of the PCM does not matter as long as it is within your generation motor. The 2013's may be the cutoff year for the two plug PCM's. You'll have to physically look at yours to determine if it is, or if it is a 1 plug PCM. You will also need to make sure that your 40 HP is a 995cc model and not a 747cc model because the smaller 747cc models are not upgradeable to a 50/60 HP.

My 4 blade actually has more speed in it and I can go to a 15, but they don't exist in a 15 so I'll have to get it custom pitched, which I'm probably going to do here really soon.

    @@extremeboating7347 Thanks for the reply. What aftermarket management systems are they using? I know little about these boat engines, but based on what I've personally done with MSEFI on a few cars and a motorcycle, you can more often than not use the factory wiring harness and sensors. You need to take a huge leap of faith and snip off the factory ECU plug and splice in the MSEFI plug, and as far as the sensors and injectors go, you just have to adjust the volt/resistance ranges of the sensors in the software so the MSEFI unit knows what it needs to see. If it was originally a carbed engine, that's a whole other story, of course.

  • @extremeboating7347

    I can't remember what they use. I believe some have used GM hardware as a lot of the plugs and stuff used are based off of GM/ Bosch style connectors. It's honestly a lot of work that is really not worth the results unless you are talking about a full on engine build involving replacement of cams by doing custom grind jobs and doing major porting of the cylinder heads/ stronger valve springs etc. Even then, the amount of $$$ you are talking will add up quick, since there really isn't a huge market for power adders, especially on an engine this size.

  • @Prototheria

    @Prototheria

    @@extremeboating7347 GM stuff is cheap and plentiful and that's what most use on the car side of things, especially when they do a carb->EFI swap. The main reason I asked about MSEFI is because I took a quick peek on eBay and the ECU you show us is $650, and I think a Microsquirt setup is about half that. It was just out of curiosity more than anything. Re: engine build... That's a whole other ball of wax and unless the weight gain isn't acceptable, you know the logical answer- just get a bigger engine. That said, I think a TVS R410 would go quite well with that 1.0L Merc if one were motivated to blaze that trail.

  • @extremeboating7347

    @extremeboating7347

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Prototheria throwing on a TVS R410 would definitely require post tuning and that would be no easy task unless you had access to something like HP Tuners or a standalone EMS for sure. Even then, it would be difficult to gauge what sort of power you are making off of it unless you had access to some sort of outboard Dyno or hub adapter that you can bolt the prop shaft to in order to get a good reading off of it. Really this stuff just depends on how far you are willing to go with things and how deep your pocketbook is. Nothing is impossible with money. As for the GM stuff, I would comb the forums because I know this stuff has been talked about and I have read about it firsthand. The thing for me was that I was just looking to make some cheap and quick pony power out of what I already had, and is an easy to do and perform swap for anyone else. The other factor you have to consider which is a limiting factor is the size of the throttle body. It would become a bottleneck if you make power past 70 HP, as these are based off of the 70HP Yamaha powerhead.

    Your PCM needs to be a 2013 or newer, and since you have a CT the PCM needs to be specifically a CT/ BF computer with that label on it.
