Just wanna point out something important that you misunderstood: The Libyan Mercenaries' "Bonus vs elephants and chariots" does not mean that Elephants and Chariots suffer morale penalty when fighting Libyan Mercenaries, nor that Libyan Mercenaries have a morale bonus fighting against Elephants and Chariots. It simply means that Libyan Mercenaries have additional attack damage against Elephants and Chariots. Morale penalty is indicated when the words "scare" or "frighten" are used, for example: -"Frighten enemy infantry" (Scythed Chariots) -"Scares horses" (Camel Cataphracts) -"Frighten elephants" (Incendiary Pigs) As for "Bonus fighting in woods/snow/desert", I'm not sure if it includes/is only limited to morale bonus. Good vid mate, cheers!

Eastern Mercs aren't that bad you just need to know how to use them Use 1: Relatively cheap instantly recuitable garrison troops to prevent riots in an emergency Use 2: Giving population to a small village/town to upgrade it and have it churn out better troops far far sooner (legit valuable) Use 3: Being meat fodder in the town center (where they can't run away) making invaders tire before hitting your real troops Use 4: Someone to push the rams when campaigning Use 5: Dial'a'speedbump

I think it's pretty obvious that what he meant was Eastern infantries are trash in melee, and of course everything has its purpose. If you ignore or alter the whole premise of the video, then you can use the same argument for even peasants or even any cheap units. Then I dare say what's the point?

I think Eastern Mercenaries need a buff give them average morale, and slightly improve melee stats still weak compared to Hellenistic and Roman units but at least they won't run away as soon as somebody looks at them funny. They need a name change to Eastern Mercenary Spearmen. Also there should be two more Eastern Mercenary types, Mercenary Eastern Archers which are basically the Persian archers from my Parthia rework suggestion but recoloured to green with a higher upkeep, and the other is Mercenary Eastern Archer-Spearmen which are basically the archer-spearmen from the Parthia rework but now green and higher upkeep

I think if I had to give a description of the mercenary elephants.... a) you'll never want to auto-resolve with a war elephant in your army. You'll lose them all way too fast when you shouldn't be losing any. c) One big charge from the flank through their entire line (constantly click attack on the far end of their army from where you are) and it's basically an instant rout unless you're fighting a huge, experienced army or multiple armies . The AI just is simply not designed to deal with elephants. d) they are slow moving on the map, but if you manage to snag them early in the game, they more than make up for it by allowing you to assault a settlement the moment you reach it.You can blitz factions very quickly with them. Heck using that, and some luck, I managed to knock out all four Roman factions within probably 20-ish turns. Admittedly, it had the quirk of leaving massive strong rebel armies in Italy that I couldn't deal with for decades. XD

Elephants seem tougher than their defense implies because of those 12 hitpoints. You seem to ignore the defense breakdowns in these videos and it really is an important thing for players to understand as it can really dictate how, when, and where to employ each of these units. Great video series, my only complaint is your overlooking of those sometimes crucial little details.

I disagree regarding camels. The best part of using camel units is that you can wreck cavalry units with them. In fact, a camel unit hitting a cataphract with a dead general in the rear is enough to make them break. They are great for protecting the flank as well from enemy cavalry. It’s true they aren’t as good for traditional cavalry duties like mop up or breaking infantry lines, but when going up against factions with heavy cavalry they do a good enough job that I use them regularly.

one thing not mentioned which is important cilician pirates are in a mob/ horde formation i.e a loose circle , and as a result irs hard to make them be part of your line, and placing them defensively is tricky as a result so integrating them with your battle plans is trickier this is very much worth mentioning as it changes their deployability also elephants are bugged, archers aim at the men ON the elephents, not the elephents themselves, resulting in a lot of missiles missing the elephents entirely and doing less damage.

Hi Lugo. Another very good video about the mercenry units of Rome 1. I have to said that is true that the eastern mercs are really bad in stats but you seriously be impresive that I am doing an egyptian campaign in legendary and defeated the 4 factions of the east (Seleucid, Armenia, Parthia and Pontus). And now, in my east army (the other one is fighting Cartage and the Brutii) I have 1 Eastern Mercenary, 3 Arab Cavalry, 2 Bedouin Warriors and, 4 Bedouin Archer all with Platinum Chevron. If you want to know what I do is use them in the only job they have: Support another units. The eastern mercs are my ram-pushing/flanking infantry in sieges, when the camels are my support against enemy cav/generals. You will surprise how effective are the bedouins and arabs agains cataphracts from the rear. About the elephants. Well they are great thats for sure, but when they appears is really weird. I dont know if depends in the size of your city and the stable buildings or even the season. Also in all my campaing they didnt appear neither to be recruit in my 3 province or in the enemy's army.

The camels help to bring down the morale faster to any cavalry unit, when the arabs can catch the survivors. Every unit have the pro and con, must factions have their unique fighting style that can make more effctive or useless the mercs. like I write before I defeat the 4 eastern factions who have very effective cavalry but against the greeks and romans most of the mercs will be pretty innefective against their heavy infantry forces.

  • @danielbalderrama4137

    @danielbalderrama4137

    4 жыл бұрын

@@hernanreipp3321 not exactly, the slingers are armour piercing and the bastarne are solid against heavy infantry. The sarmatian mercenaries are anti heavy infantry because of their charge bonus and attack stats. Horse archers will be good in every situation. The camels are efficient but too slow. Their the unit you bring for show and even if you get them in a fight. They usually lose against every other cavalry unit unless you have the cataphract camels. Even in a rear charge, cataphract camels don't deliver the same impact as a normal cataphract would. Yes every faction have their strengths and weaknesses. Scythia and Parthia are horrible in siege battles unless they are defending but they are incredibly effective in a open field battle against every faction. Rome is the master of siege battles, there is no faction that can equalize with them in a siege battle on attack or defense.

@@danielbalderrama4137 I was talking about the eastern/middle east mercs they have little used against heavy armored infantry, when I saw the Balearic Slingers or the Cretan Archers ALWAYS I recruit them (no matters what faction use) the same with the Scythian Horse Archers and the Sarmatian Lancers to annoying the enemy or attack they rear Honestly, I hate siege cities no matters with what faction (even the Romans), must of my time use the "bait tactic" when you send one solitary unit but keep close the main army to made them fight in the field. But sometimes a Bug reduce your numbers for some reason and sadly have to siege the city to win.

Mercenaries need to be used based on their strength. If they have weak stats, they are garrison or support, if they move fast, they screen, flank or disrupt, if they are spears they hold or fill the line, if they are missle they harass and move. I believe that historically horses were afraid of camels because the camel urine smells so bad to them. As for game play, I only use camel units if I am expecting to be facing horse cavalry. I usually like to engage them with my general to lock them down, then bring the camels in to scare off the enemy horses with a charge to the flanks. Then I withdraw my general and camels and get ready repeat the tactic as needed.

Rule 1 - never buy Eastern Mercenaries. If you do hire them, let them push a ram, then send them running away. They're too expensive for garrisons, and they're a liability in battle only good for applying a morale debuff for your army. @@lugotorix6173 certainly, the Hellenic mercenaries are by far the best mercenaries. In the east, I use mercenaries to replenish a campaigning army and fill gaps, in Hellenic campaigns, It's not uncommon for me to send out an under-strength army and count on mercenaries filling it out (especially with early game Roman armies where Cretans and mercenary hoplites fill in the two most notable gaps in their unit roster).

About the Merc Elephants Look at their HP. That's why. It's kind of DnD thing here. Someone can hit it with a sword or whatever, crush through this 16 def, but this removes only 1 HP. And remember: this 1HP hit will happen only if soldier was able to get CLOSE enough for a hit and is not flying around (with his pathetic 1HP pool). So yeah. We don't see those health-bars in Total War series (that's why they feel so "realistic", i think), but elephants do get their damage overtime. upd: i think it works for other (Carthage) elephant units, gotta check it out later.

Eastern mercenaries aren't even that bad imo. Every early infantry pretty much breaks during a cavalry charge anyway, even militia hoplites, so it doesn't even matter how strong the unit is. However, it pretty much just provides a numbers bonus, which benefits your morale at the expense of your enemies. Even on very hard, the enemy will get scared if you run 1000 eastern mercenaries at you, even if you have no chance of winning, and it'll probably break their unit. You just can't expect them, just like any unit on very hard, to fight on their own and hold the line.

Lybian Mercs. 4 units of them in your army, used behind the infantry, then use them as suport troop and you have no complaint about them. Numidian Mercs. Nothing to add. Arab cavalry / Beduin warriors Meh... They are the same to me. All cavalry, just switching on the mounts. Beduin archers. Tendo to use these behind armies or protected behind mine. Merc. War Elefants Never had te chance to use them. Though I dont usualy use elefants since they might turn on my army if battle goes wrong. Cilician Pirates They are good in general, but being deployed in the same maner as the peasants, they ocupy much space on battlefield making them unreliable in defense. Still they can be used as suport but nothing more.

Elephants are the most overused but underestimated unit in the game, manily bc ppl use them entirely wrong! The best bang for your buck to use elephants are far diffrent than Calvary, they can be used for flanking but that is not thier greatest use but this is sadly the "commoners" man use for them, use them as horses. its sad really. However, if you want to play elite like me u use elephants for one use and one use only and that is to assassinate the enemy general very early in the game in a rush attack once you lock down some of thier units. Bc the elephants will kill the enemy general right away if you can get to them and it is the most effective way to use them bc if u leave them in the back it may be to late for your army and it gives the enemy more time to counter them with archers and fire. u shouldn't recruit to many elephants at one time bc again they are mainly to used to cheaply cut enemy lines and kill the general. That is its most effective use, and can swing an entirely unfavorable battle your way especially vs rome and egypt.
