    I'd use Top Hydraulics to rebuild my 1994 MBZ E32o- Cabriolet top hydraulic system...Klaus is the best,very professional and helpful throughout the job. I'd remove the top assembly myself and with the top outside,remove the cylinders...the big one use T40 torque ( there are 2 bolts, one inside and outside of the cylinder ), the small cylinder use Allen #5. Make sure when you put the small cylinders, to install the cylinder with the harness at the passenger side.If probably easy to install the hydraulic lines on the big cylinder when the top in been install ( have 3 people hold it while you put the lines ) or you can put the top inside the vehicle and remove the seat belt assist mechanics upper bracket remove ( only 3 bolts ), to get easy access to install the big cylinder hydraulic lines.

    I have used the Top Hydraulics to recondition the most of the cylinders in my Australian E220 Cabriolet. I must say their service is great, Klaus is super knowledgeable and the roof is operating perfectly ever since (approx 3 years). One issue that perhaps needs more attention is the removal of the main cylinders (from the quarter panels). In most cases, Loctite (of sort) had been applied and these bolts have proven extremely difficult to remove (let alone the outer ones) - in fact, my (cheap) ratchet had snapped during it. I had get some help, lift the whole roof in the air in order to remove it. If one needs to do this, make sure you mark the steel plate onto which the roof mechanism is resting - millimetres are important here! Thank you Klaus - this is great video!

Still, we put a lot of effort into this video and are glad to see that it is appreciated.

    Klaus, first of all I would like to thank you for the magnificent job you are doing explaining all the details of the hydraulics. Recently I bought a 1992 Mercedes A124, which had been sitting unattended in the south of Spain for years. It had a case cover lock cylinder which was leaking. I got it fixed and immediately the left fabric bow cylinder started leaking. After I fixed that one, the left main lift cylinder started leaking. As I was unable to unlock the bolts and I am afraid that the remaining cylinders will also fail, I am now thinking of adding a special liquid named lecwec to the hydraulic liquid in order to swell their sealing rings. I know this is not the professional way to solve the problem, but I would just like to know if you have any experience in this regard. I would really appreciate your opinion on this.

    Hello James, Thanks for asking. In your climate, it is a forgone conclusion that the seals in all eight top cylinders a shot. Do NOT use additives in the fluid, as they work only for a short time and then create a lot of additional problems. I know it's tempting, but you will be sorry in the end. "Stop-leak" type additives make the seals swell up and some of them may work temporarily. The problem is, the seals will son fall apart because their composition has been altered and the remnants of the seals can get caught in the valve blocks. The end result is that you need all three valve blocks rebuilt, plus possibly the roll bar cylinder, in addition to the set of eight cylinders. Thus, do it right the first time around and take care of all eight top cylinders at the same time. We ship to Spain on a daily basis, transit time is about a week. I understand that you would like to do the seal replacement yourself and save some money. Allow me to tell you the following: It is rare that do-it-yourselfers do not damage the main lift cylinders and the bow extension cylinders in their repair attempt, and the seals that are offered online are not even as good as the original ones from Mercedes. Don't let "Made in Germany" fool you on seal sets - they are inferior and I doubt that they are made in Germany. Be sure to replace the cup-shaped rod seal, the piston seal, the gland seal, wiper seal on main lifts and bow extension, and the port seals where the hoses go in.

  • @TopHydraulics

    If the T40 Torx bolts for the main lifts are stripped, then you want to take the whole top off - it's not difficult, as it's only a few bolts at the frame, but the top is pretty big. This will give you clear access to the bolts. Try not to drill them out. Instead, grind a slot into them and use an impact driver with a flat screwdriver bit to take out the bolts. This way, you can re-use the bolts and you don't risk damaging the cylinders by drilling too far.

    Fantastic video ! you should be a teacher ;) - in the video you speak about port seals are those seals that go between the hoseconnector and the pump or are they in the pump built in ? my tonneau lift cylinder leaks where the hoseline goes in so i guess there s a problem with the port seal ? can i order these port seals ? thx a lot !

  • @TopHydraulics

    @TopHydraulics

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the kind words. Port seals are built into the hydraulic cylinder, behind a brass bushing where the hose goes in. Replacing these seals is absolutely not a DIY job, because you would almost certainly damage the bushings and you cannot buy the proper seals anywhere. If you have a leak exactly where the hose goes into the cylinder, then the problem is the port seal (unless someone has badly damaged the hose fitting before, as well). We do not sell our seals. Our port seals are custom made out of Viton with an edge activated design, which is a huge improvement over Mercedes' original seals. Our port seals should be good for well over 50 years...

    @@1967lion That would be the "emergency depoyment". Most likely, this is caused by a faulty sensor at the rear axle, telling the computer that one of the rear tires is in the air. I have a 1992 300CE cabrio and the rear headrest warning lights on my dashboard go on/blinking from time to time.When I play a bit with the up/down button sometimes they stop but not always. What module is controlling these warning lights and what are they warning about ? ( position, pressure,....) Grts Patrick

  • @TopHydraulics

    @TopHydraulics

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello Patrick, The headrest warning light typically comes on when the soft top control module does not get the signal that the headrest/rollbar is down. There is a limit switch at the bottom of the right roll bar support that is prone to getting oxidized or dirty at this age. Fortunately, it is easily taken apart and cleaned. Simply unplug it, unscrew it from the roll bar support and clean the contacts.

    Hi Klaus, I have a US spec 1995 E320 convertible. I just let the top down and hydraulic fluid is leaking from the middle rear of the roof. I put the top back and now it appears that fluid is leaking out of the rear left and right end. Would that be the rear bow lock?

  • @TopHydraulics

    @TopHydraulics

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for asking. A leak from the middle rear of the roof would likely be from the cylinder A1298001672 in the rear bow lock A1247700426. It is possible that the fluid you are now seeing on the sides has originated from the rear bow lock, as well. However, all the other cylinders are overdue to fail, and you may very well already have multiple leaks. As I keep saying in our videos, it is best to tackle all cylinders at the same time, or you will be spending a lot more time and money in the end.

    I recently bought a US spec. 1994 E320 cabriolet with 122,000 miles. My top works but it is leaking fluid somewhere in the system. Anybody have an idea which cylinder is most likely the offender?

  • @TopHydraulics

    @TopHydraulics

    5 жыл бұрын

    Congrats on your new ride! Do you have any repair history on the car? Hopefully, that would tell you which cylinders have been replaced before. Normally, the first cylinders to fail are the rear bow lock cylinder 1298001672 (mounted in latch 1247700426) and the case cover lock cylinder (mounted in latch 124750 0684). Soon to follow would be the two main lift cylinders 1248000072 and the two fabric bow tension cylinders 1248000272 and 1248000772. The two case cover lift cylinders 1248000372 and 1248000472 are typically the last ones to fail, but there are many exceptions to the rules. Ultimately, you are going to end up having all of the original cylinders in your E-Class cabriolet rebuilt. At almost 25 years of age, all original cylinders are overdue to fail. If you find that the rear bow lock cylinder or the case cover lock cylinder is leaking, then it is fairly likely that all the other cylinders are still original. In that case, you want to seriously consider dealing with all cylinders at the same time, as this is clearly the cheapest and least aggravating route in the long run. You can check the cylinders by stopping the top part way. Let go of the red button while opening the top just after the storage cover has opened and the rear bow (the rear section of the soft top with the window in it) has lifted. From there, you can see all cylinders after familiarizing yourself with their locations. Klaus

    Hi Klaus, I've got one or even multiple leaks from my cylinders in a E320. I'm suspecting they come from the left side of the cover, as i spotted oil leaking down the left rear fender. • @TopHydraulics

    Hello Bartosz, thanks for asking. The only tricky part is if the rear bow does not release any more due to some massive leaks. The rear bow is the rear part of the soft top with the glass in it. It is locked odwn by the rear bow lock 1247700426 with the rear bow lock cylinder 1298001672 in it. Mercedes has not provided access to the rear bow lock for manual unlocking, in case you need to manually open the top. We came up with a trick to unlock the rear bow, which is shown in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKJ218R6qJaqg7w.html Typically, the rear bow lock cylinder is the first one to leak in your E320 or 300CE E-Class cabriolet hydraulics. Not much later, you will find all the other cylindes leaking. Given that these cars are now over 20 years old, all of the original cylinders have passed their service life 'expectancy'.

    Attention: the T30 torx that holds the bow cylinder and that is shown in minute 17:49 was a 5mm HEX in my 1995 E320. This is consistent with the written documentation that is available in various forums. I believe Mercede has changed this on some models. Using a T30 in the 5mm hex will work initially, but eventually strip the screw. Fortunately, the hex will go deeper, so I was able to free this screw.
