Consumer reports has been around since 1936, but the reliability really started to take a dive around the early 2000s, coinciding with the decline in print media/magazine sales. To keep their doors open it seems they were more and more willing taking payola for reviews, across a wide spectrum of consumer products they review from smartphones to laptops to tvs to cars. I saw a similar decline with the reliability in other print media/magazines and the reviews they put out around the 2000s as well. Not that print magazine payola for reviews didn't happen before, but it seemed to have an uptick across all sorts of magazine based organizations when paper subscriptions declined in the 2000s.

I just got it 2 weeks back and tried it out in complicated traffic here in SW Florida...and it was pretty amazing. It handled a couple situations I honestly thought was amazing, and really not sure how it figured out what to do on one of them (funny temporary lane shift with someone partially blocking the lane on the one side and an emergency vehicle parked awkwardly on the left). There was only one time I took over and it was probably unnecessary in retrospect..but the car was confidently moving into a hight speed, 3 lane road sooner than I would have LOL. There was one minor negative, on the long drive out of my development there are a couple speed bumps and the car didn’t know to slow down for them.

I've had FSD for five years. For most of that time it was terrifying but starting at the tail end of V11 it became useful on highways. V12 is a game changer, its very close to real full self driving. I've been using it heavily on both highways and on secondary roads. I just did a 100 mile trip in New Hampshire on secondary highways. It didn't make any mistakes. It slows down when approaching an intersection. It peeks out to look for traffic at intersections. It sees that other cars have stopped to allow me to turn and then makes the turn exactly as i would have done it. On this trip there were a couple of blind intersections where it waited for me to nudge it to go. These were truely blind corners where you didn't have a clear view of the cross traffic so it made me throw the dice rather than do it itself which was the correct thing for it to do. Mercedes isn't going to be able to handle roads like this because they rely on hyper mapped highways which isn't scalable. One more thing. I have FSD set to Chill. If FSD isn't performing as well for you as it is for me try setting it to Chill.

I just tried the new FSD 12.3.6 today. The car got out of my long driveway whitout any issue. It's a gravel driveway with no lines or markings or curb just grass next to it. I had no interventions to go to Whole Foods, auto park there and then go to our local Tesla store.

I had the full self driving trial for an entire month, and it made me a believer. The basic free autopilot is not that great, but when you get full self driving it's insane. It literally feels like a person is driving. The vast majority of the interventions were just because of the gps/route, if the gps has it wrong, or I know a better way, or I prefer to be in a different lane, those were 99% of the interventions. This is how we know the media is lying on all fronts.

I’ve been driving a Model S PL for 4½ years and am amazed by Tesla’s improvements in FSD. However, in my testing of v12.3.6, I’ve had to intervene enough times that my wife refuses to accompany me when I’m using FSD. I agree that Consumer Reports is frequently off-base in their reviews, especially with EVs. However, it’s equally a lie that Tesla FSD currently has “zero interventions.” Given the rate of FSD improvement, I believe they’ll get there in a year or two.

You are showing a basic Mercedes Assistant to keep in the lane. The most you can compare it with is the free Tesla system. This Assistant is listed on the official Mercedes website as Level 2. Level 3 is provided by the Driver Pilot system. Drive Pilot uses lidar and HD maps and is designed for highways. It will not require you to keep your hands on the steering wheel, but you will not be able to use it in the city or those highways for which there is no HD map.

President Biden is a union guy, Tesla are anti-union. Therefore Biden dislikes Tesla, that's why Biden claimed that GM “electrified the entire automotive industry” under CEO Marry Barra’s leadership. This of course rubbed Elon the wrong way and why he now leans towards the Conservatives. From Politico 9/19/23 - "General Motors CEO Mary Barra has visited the White House eight times since Joe Biden became president". Elon visited the White House numerous times under the Obama and Trump administrations, but as far as I am aware, only once since Biden took office. If Biden was a bigger man he would have sucked it up and apologized to Elon as Elon's vision of electrifying America (and beyond) are a far cry from the views of the fossil fuel industry. Marry Barra is a joke! and is being paid MAGNITUDES OF ORDER more than she is worth. She always has "plans to do this", but never produces the goods. GM could have been the leader of the field, look back at the EV1.

The problem I have is that Mercedes was approved for Level 3 because they will take liability for very limited operational modes. The issue is that liability ends when the systems tells you to take over. So given the large number of scenarios where the system cannot operate you have to be hyper vigilant to take over without forewarning.

My Hyundai lane following is just as frightening. These systems are meant to make the drive safer and more relaxing, but the Hyundai system is very rudimentary. You need to keep your hands on the wheel and be ready for when it tries to steer you into guardrails, concrete barriers, plus it can’t centre in the lane. I’ve tried it a few times and I don’t use it. I test drove a Tesla a few weeks ago and Ive ordered one - it’s like the difference between black and white and colour TV. My Hyundai feels like a steam engine. I also test drove the Ioniq 5N - too much gimmickry and it’s quite chunky and very heavy with a price tag way above the M3P.

After seeing your report i want back and watched the whole thing ns I also looked into what CR did. CR was big on making sure the driver was paying attention and not so much on the actually capabilities of the FSD system. Basically, CR just drove the cars on the freeway and tried to look away. They gave Tesla a 9/10 for that type of driving. Tesla got no credit for being able to do so much more.

Yep CR based their entire score heavily on whether the car forced you to pay attention... hardly any points given for ability. One wonders why Tesla doesn't smear CR publically. However I think Elon kind of thrives on being a whipping boy. It motivates him to perform just that much better so he can watch them eat their words.

Nice for calling consumer reports out on the comparison. Same road, same weather and same traffic with different autonomous system is the way to test fairly to compare. Mercedes probably dictated to consumer reports to drive on a certain stretch of road under certain conditions they knew their system would perform better thus controlling the test environment and rigging the test. Consumer reports just lost credibility big time.

Well, not to defend Consumer Reports, the Test was done about 9 months ago. While this would make little difference to most makes, it's a huge difference to Tesla with major updates every few months. The CR tests did not use FSD either. Now consumer reports rates quality of the the system only 20% of it's score which is nuts. The other 80% are not important to most drivers but CR adds them to downgrade the safest systems like Tesla Autopilot and FSD.

I've owned my Y since 2021 and only recently used FSD current version. Yes, it's amazing but I just drove tonight to a restaurant, and I intervened 4 times, twice for it seeing the rte 5 sign as a speed sign so it slowed down to 5mph and people behind me were pissed, another time it was my fault. I chose to move to the left lane, and the car moved into the mid lane when it was clear . I was startled and tapped the brake. The car was correct vin moving to the mid lane. Last time it just shut down I'm assuming since I didn't touch dial on wheel to show I was paying attention . I had to take control. It slows prematurely at lights and stop signs, then creeps up to intersection which is better than stopping abruptly. So overall it's a great system but not there yet.

Reading speed limit signs seems to be a widespread issue. My Nissan Juke (ICE) sometimes advises weird max speed limits. The EU is introducing regulations next year that prevent cars from exceeding the speed limit. Unless the tech massively improves it will be carnage.

It's not about the efficacy of the technology, it's about talking up the European Legacy Auto industry and protecting jobs. Instead of allowing the useless directors of ICE Auto makers to fall by the wayside due to their refusal to embrace EVs the EU is acting to protect them at the expense of European citizens who are being cut off from cheaper, more efficient and better built Chinese cars. I've watched many many YT videos of Tesla FSD for the past few years. The rate of improvement and the ability to fix bugs quickly via download versus recall, is astounding and though I've never been in a self driving car, I would certainly trust Tesla to do it. The neurolink learning system is the key, and it will no doubt be a key factor in the fast growing robotics industry too. We are living at an amazing time.

I did 15 years as a driving instructor, and its the nearest thing you can get to full self driving. Always waiting for the pupil to do something stupid, The better ones will lull you into a false sense of security. The problem is, it's far less stressful to drive yourself than concentrating on something else doing the job. Self driving cars have to be nearly 100% to be any good otherwise it's useless, you will either be playing russian roulette or putting more effort into supervision. Having given up driving instruction in the 90s and becoming a computer programmer, I can tell you for a fact self driving is infinitely more complex landing a space x booster or an auto pilot on a modern aircraft, and I don't think at the moment anyway the computer in a Tesla or any other car is up to the job, there are just to many variables that need to be processed in real time. Give it 10 years and they will crack it, but not now. And remember it doesn't have to be as good as a human, it has to be better.

CR tends to rate Teslas a bit poorly in reliability. About a month back they reported on 5 and 10 year expenses and Tesla was the best. Something is wrong with that. I also watched 3 folks involved with their car testing who seemed pretty rational about Tesla. Still one of them said he thought FSD was unsafe. Opinions will vary, but I have been wondering about CR's fairness.

What version of FSD did CR use? My opinion is that it wasn't until 3/16/2024 with V12.3.3 that FSD became outstanding. And V12.3.4/.5/and.6 kept improving and we're excited for (next week's?) V12.4.x. Something is wrong when you do not give credit for driving without lane markings. Mercedes is unsafe. Consumer Reports was so dependable for so long. Did they go political? There are a treasure trove of FSD vehicles are amazing. However, my opinion is that the full freeway mode isn't until V12.6. At a 2nd digit every 2 months for FSD, we're looking at September or October for absolutely awesome FSD.

I assume they didn’t test FSD because it was either not available on their test vehicle or because it was only a beta, not a full release. I’m sure that will be their response. If that’s the case then the score would be reversed as soon as FSD is fully released and they are able to test it as an option/feature available to anyone that pays for it.
