Mercedes Rear Backing Plate: How to install without removing wheel bearings

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

in this guide i show you how you can change Rear Brake Backing plate on a Mercedes vito or any other car without removing the wheel bearing.
Wheel bearings cost allot of money and you destroy them if you remove them, so you have to buy new once.
With my method you can avoid buying new wheel bearings and save these money.
this method is made by a Mercedes Workshop

    Well done. I like the way you point out all the little things, ie. Cleaning out the rust on the torx screws, as well. 👍

    I skipped the welding step and it still works perfectly, no loss of strength to the backplate, and the caliper covers up the cut, once its all back together. Watch out for where the hand brake cable connects on the the hand brake shoe mechanism, it could be siezed, and if you disassemble it fully there is a tiny pin that can be easily lost. The main mistake I made was not to order and fit new handbrake shoes/discs&pads. A new spring kit is also essential in my view.

    Great vid. I didn't think it would work on my Mercedes CLK cabrio but if you cut in the right place you cannot see the joint when the brake shield is re-fitted. Also the shield reforms into the original shape with no problem. I'm no great welder but a couple of small areas were no prob. This is a truly excellent idea - thanks for sharing and the advice!

    Great video. I have gl450 and the backing plate is is decent shape but the locking pin holes for the e brake spring is rusted. Any ideas of a way to fix without replacing it all? Can I put a washer on the backside?

    Hello, fantastic video, I’ve been left in this situation too!! Can I ask what size are the screws that bolt the dust cover back on? I take it they are M6 but how long is the thread?

    Unfortunately Merc's are not what they used to be. Ive been working on vehicles of all types for 33 years. Merc's have just gone downhill since the 80's. Overpriced run of the mill products now. This is a perfect example of crappy materials and poor engineering by designers that have never worked on vehicles. Good for you figuring out a short cut around this.No pun intended! ... I'm working on a 2016 Sprinter 2500 ,doing same job but mine are mounted under wheel bearing housing Damn it!

    Don't do this it distorts the plate so much that when you put the brakes back on you will find they will not sit right, trust me I've ended up ordering another set of plates because of this.

    Hei Jon Then you did it completly wrong, his method is aproved by Mercedes work shops. I have been working at one of them. and this method will save you for buying new wheel bearings. the plates has nothing to do with the mount of the brakes or how they work. these plates only cover the brake discs so water and dirt cant get sprayed onto the brake discs. do you have any pictures to show us, so i can guide you, and see what you did wrong? check if you switched left side with right side

  • @JonathanHealey1984

    @JonathanHealey1984

    @@rexthecarengineer4001 then you can't have worked on these cars because your whole statement is wrong. They do need to sit perfect, they do hold the retaining spings for the brakes and it will distort and rub against the disk.

  • @rexthecarengineer4001

    @rexthecarengineer4001

    the springs are only keeping the brake shoes on place for the handbrake nothing else. if they rub against the disc you have to do a full adjustment of the brake shoes. 1. release the handbrake 2. slag the handbrake cable, as much you can 3. put the disc on and turn the adjust screw on the brake shoes until the discs are braked (locked in place) then release it 5 clicks and then re adjust your cable and your handbareks is adjuested

  • @JonathanHealey1984

    @@rexthecarengineer4001 yes thanks already done that, but you completely missed my point, the little rim on the dust shield needs to sit flush any distortion in the plate will result in rubbing against the disk when it's put back on if he had continued in the video they would hear it clearly.

    He clearly told you why he cut the plate. first, u have to pull out the bearing, this u will need a special tool for witch means $$$ seccond u have to buy new bearings since once they are pulled out they are destroyed witch means $$$ last u have to put the new bearings in, this can be done with the tool kit u used to remove the bearing with. Its all about money, its still a dyi repair video for those with less money.

    Ahh yes yes, another wise person, sure, cut it, but in a year or max two youll have to change it again, plus that plate with that cut in wont protect the rest from water and dust, great idea how to fix your car for a year just to break the whole bearing in process, ehhh
