Mercedes R230 - How to change transmission oil & filter + electrical pass through O rings. Fix leak.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a detailed video showing how to fix a transmission oil leak on your Mercedes R230. In our case a transmission oil leak on our SL55 caused all sorts of problems, including limp mode, unable to shift, no reverse etc.
The video shows exactly how to change the transmission oil pan gasket, the transmission oil filter and also the electrical pass through connector O rings. These O rings are often the source of the leak and can cause many transmission issues once they deteriorate. The pass through connector we attempted to fit was from the Febi kit mentioned in the 772.6 conductor plate video we did a while back (see • Mercedes stuck in gear... ). It was not a URO branded connector.
The end of the video shows where to buy the transmission oil and all the hardware you will need for this job. All the parts used in this job are available from URO directly if you are a wholesaler (apaindustries.com/catalog) or via Rockauto.com if you are an individual. URO have a huge selection of parts for the R230 and SL55. Here are the URO part numbers for this job:
Transmission oil pan with pre fitted sump plug and magnet is part number URO-009895 (Mercedes parts No. 140 270 0812)
Transmission pan gasket is part number URO-001335 (Mercedes parts No. 140 271 0080)
Transmission filter URO-001336 (Mercedes parts No. 140 277 0095)
Transmission wire harness connector URO-001804 (Mercedes parts No. 203 540 0253)
Transmission dipstick is part number URO-016659 (Mercedes parts No. 140 589 1521 00)

Nice job ! The problem with these 722.6 transmission is that you can’t remove oil from the converter ! You only change 4l out of 8l in the transmission. The only solution to fully flush the oil is to rince the fluid by opening the circuit at the radiator level in order to change all the old fluid, but requires more than 12/14l of new oil to do it correctly…

Yes you are right....that is one of the reasons that I went for the easier option. Draining the torque convertor is much more involved. One day, I'll get round to doing a video on the subject, but next stop is the A service...Mike

Hmmmm…..the problem is, that garages not familiar with the R230 may not know about the pass through conductor O rings or indeed the correct torque specs of the transmission pan. Over tightening with cause a leak. Mike

Loads of great information Mike, thank you :) Can you suggest a small kit for my 107 for my trip to Norfolk? Is there anything I should check before the journey or anything I should have with me? I should be in the area from the 8th May for a few days for a coffee!

The only think I carry in my 107 is a set of belts (never needed them in 20 years) and a spare fuel pump relay. My 107 is probably THE most reliable vehicle I have ever owned so I reckon you will be just fine. Have fun in Norfolk and just call me spontaneously if you are around. Mike

Great video Mike. My worry is that getting into your r107 ended with me going and buying one, if that happens with the r230 my wife will either leave me or run me over with it!

Hi Justin - good to meet you the other day. The SL55 is truly an exhilarating car....but not the head turner that the r107 is. Most people have no idea that unrestricted it is s 200mph car...the trouble is that the V8 sounds so good it encourages you to drive like a complete £$%^.....which will give you about 7mpg..... Let me know how you get on with your car. Mike

Where did you purchase the correct dipstick from? I’d like one for my car.

Hi - the end of the video shows where I got the dip stick. I got mine on eBay - cost about £5. There is a video in the SL55 playlist on this channel showing how to use it to check oil levels. You ideally need a scanner. Mike
