The M276.8XX turbo motors do use a 6-point plug, whereas the M276.9XX NA motors use that strange 12-point 14mm plug. The turbo motors use NGK plugs and mine indexed nicely within +/- 45° if the injector.

Full Synthetic oil is critical on these motors and maximum of 5,000 mile intervals if you don't want problems. Every PM the injectors need cleaner concentrate ran through them to stay clean.

Spark plug Shims are used to index plugs. Changing Shims will alter the fully seated rotation angle of the electrode.

I have a SLK 350 with a small rattling noise when starting. Lasts about 2-4 seconds. I changed the Timing tensioners and Check valves behind the tensioners. When I was going to remove the check valves the vehicle didn’t have any??? I installed new check valves and it still rattles after sitting for a long time. I’ve read about that the Engine belt tensioner can make rattling noises too

The belly tensioner for sure can make a knocking noise although not likely one to happen when the engineer is started and then just go away. Another thing that would cause a start up rattle would be a bad vvt gear that isn't locking properly. I just did one not too long ago on a gl Mercedes v6. 2012 I think it was but I'd have to double check.

So what your Mercedes dealer did was give inaccurate information typical , that's why it's best to use an independent Mercedes mechanic in my opinion .

Use Mann filter with liqui moly 5 w 40. And add liqui moly jectron in gas tank. It’s injectors.

Could the timing chain cause the cam shaft adjuster to fail in the ML350

GREAT VIDEO!!! Hi, I have a 2012 ml350.. actually, my wife does...))) The engine has a rattling noise at startup and goes away after a few minutes of idling. After engine restarting it runs normal but if I restart after a few hours it comes back((( my guess is it's got to be those engine oil flow control valves ( there are 4 of them) people say it may be chain tensioners or cam udjasters. What's the best way to identify the problem? Was told there is TSB because of that problem. Should the Benz dealer take care of it? thanks

TSB is not a recall so they won't pay for a tsb. I would suggest starting with a good oil change. OE filter and some good oil like motul. Chain rattle noise for 1-2 seconds on startup is normal, minutes long and something is wrong. Is it a rattle or a tick tick like a lifter possibly? Chain rattling could be from a failed/failing tensioner, stuck vvt solenoid/oil control solenoid, stretched timing chains. Really needs to be diagnosed by a good Indy shop or dealer if you can swallow the bill.

It is the secondary timing chain tensioner (in my case, it was the secondary tensioner on the driver side) not getting sufficient oil pressure at cold starts because there is no restriction preventing oil from draining out of the tensioner after the oil pump stops. The chain tensioner's pushing rod only does its job when it is supplied with enough oil pressure. The noise you hear at cold starts is the timing chain rattling, for not being tensioned enough. The chain rattles and hits everything within its range, and vibrates excessively. To fix this rattling noise, it requires just a little check valve to plug up the tensioner's oil conduit so oil is still kept inside the tensioner after the oil pump is turned off. With enough oil kept inside, the tensioner needs way less time to build up oil pressure at next start. Get it fixed before it causes damage to your timing system.

@@metroylee Glad I found this reply, OP essentially outlined my issue perfectly. So you kept the original tensioner? Heard new version of the tensioner have 4 holes for oil feeding vs just 2

The noise sounded like cam phasers that weren't locking in place. So it was a kind of tapping noise. Most notable when in gear and held around 1200-1300 rpm.
