    So if an engineer who has spent many years on ADAS: evaluating, testing and driving them has this much trouble to find the "auto parking" feature, how about the target market of a 65 year old lady, who is trying to do the same?

    Yes! Hoping to see more videos like this. Not enough car reviewers delve into the details of the car's autonomous systems. Most of the time they show it for a few minutes successfully staying in lane on a straight highway and call it a day. From you guys, I'd like to see you really push these systems. See how they perform on curves, in heavy traffic, during day/night, inclement weather, etc. Ideally you'll want to standardize your testing a bit by driving the same route. Also it would be better to spend more time with the car to give a proper evaluation, but I understand if that's not possible. Nice work Chris!

  • @eurouc

    100% agreed. Even the reviewers with the most followers barely mention the autonomy, sometimes not at all. Then there are always the comments that dismiss any notion of autonomy because they enjoy driving. Duh….. that’s not the point.

    Nice. I have a 2022 EQS 580 and love it. When in self-driving, you don't have to keep the blinker on to change lanes. You just tap it and the blinkers come on and stay on until the car changes the lane completely. As well, if you try to change lanes to quickly and it determines a vehicle is too close, it will warn you and not change lanes. However, when the there is enough distance, the blinker comes on and the arrow shows up in the heads-up display showing you the car is going to now change lanes. It is an amazing system in my opinion. It is one of the easiest lane keep assist if have had and never does anything harsh to not want to use it. Good job Mercedes.

    At around 09:55, being from Germany I suppose that MB did implement this feature as something that is very useful in Germany. Unlike as in the US, Germany has the traffic light on the same side of the intersection that you stop at. If you are the first one on the light, you would have to lean forward to see the status of that light through your windshield. At times this can be tricky when your belt engaged and locked, you can't lean forward enough to see the light.

    My grandmother's 51 Pontiac had a sun visor over the front windshield. And this being a problem, they mounted a lens on the dash right in front of the driver to see up from under the visor. I think it was a stock option. Before lights over the lanes they were just on a simple pole on the passenger side before the intersection (like a stop sign).

    Thank you for an excellent review. I have owned this car for three weeks and I have yet to use the parking assist feature. It is much easier to just park the car by myself. The lane change feature is very nice on the adaptive cruise control. I used it for the first time last week and it worked flawlessly. That feature is only available on Teslas with FSD. The car uses radar for the adaptive cruise control, something that Tesla has removed for the Model Y and 3. Another nice safety feature on this car is the reverse cross traffic warning. I was backing out of a parking spot at the dealer and the car brought me to a stop as a car I did not see pulled behind me. I expected my insurance to be doubled with the purchase of a car valued over $100k but my increase was only $200 a year which is probably because of all the safety features on the car.

    They are selling every car they are building. In many parts of the country they have "market adjustments". The low numbers are due to a very limited supply in the US. Of course, there is always that big sticker price. My mid model 580 with a few options was 132. And that was without the latest price hike of 6k. My biggest option was the matte paint which was 3k.

    In my Mercedes S550 2016 when I have auto pilot on it will not handle freeway curves above 37mph. It will drive into another lane. Slight curves are okay so it is only really good on mostly straight freeways. I did not see you test this in your review. It is my understanding that the current models have the same restrictions above 37mph. I also have a new Tesla and it handles all curves on the freeway or road even at 70mph. Please comment on this issue or do another review on the autopilot on significant curves at speed. Thanks

  • @ToddNorthrop

    @ToddNorthrop

    I have a 2020 S560, and it handles curves just fine at full highway speed. I find the most annoying thing about lane-keeping systems in general is that even if they handle the curves, they don't drive like a human so they are constantly driving where all the debris builds up on the road. Technically it might be the "right" place to be in the lane, but not the best place in the lane.

    9:44 "...they don't even know the lane assistance is on...": Which brings me to a gripe with all software. Has anyone seen, in any documentation, a "glossary" of annunciator icons? The "tool tip" feature for graphical controls is a huge benefit. But if you don't have touch screen (for all the features) of the display, you need a quick way to find it...especially if you're just renting. 14:04 Is that a "blind spot" warning (flashing) in the side mirror? 15:00 Lane change behavior has to be locale sensitive. In Houston, signaling a lane change prompts the person behind you in the desired lane to "speed up" so you can (must) get in behind him.

    Didn’t Mercedes say this EQS has a level 3 autonomy system? I am certain i remember them touting this in news releases. Or is that only in Europe that’s offered?

  • @JoergWartenberg

    @JoergWartenberg

    2 жыл бұрын

    There are only two countrys on world, where law allows Level 3 automation, these are Japan and Germany. The EQS (together with the S-Class) is the very first car, that fullfills the legal requirements. In Germany you can order the Drive Pilot option for the EQS, which allows real Level 3 under the constraints defined by the German law (only up to 60km per h and only on pre mapped roads). They main difference to other systems, like Teslas FSD, is that the driver must not monitor, what the car is doing and the car manufacturer Mercedes is fully responsible when the system is in Level 3, and not the driver (in case of an alert, the driver has 10 seconds time to take over). In practice this allows the driver to do other tasks, like reading a newspaper, while driving in situation like the morning traffic jam.

I would love to hear you thoughts on the more general engineering of the car and repair-ability of the EQS vs Tesla. Now i am no expert but i have a feeling the Tesla would be easier to work on since so many of it's systems are clumped more together. fx how how it sems most powertriain related things are together with the battery making it easy to just pull that out and diagnose all that together vs the EQS where it seems a lot of the power systems are more spread and you have to go though a lot of other thing to access them. Would love you hear if my thinking is on a totally wrong track and what you have to say about it. And thanks for the great videos guys. It's really nice learning about electric cars from you.

    A question about legal implications of full-self-driving assistance. If prevailing traffic is traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, does FSD roll with traffic or obey the posted limit? If FSD is controlling the vehicle in excess of the posted limit and the vehicle is involved in an accident, does the fact that the vehicle was traveling in violation of the posted limit constitute contributory negligence? I can imagine a victim (or more likely the victim's insurance company) suing the vehicle manufacturer as the vehicle was traveling in excess of the posted limit.

    It's either full self-driving, or driver assist, the two are fundamentally different. As long as it's sold as driver assist, the driver has full responsibility. When it's sold as full self-driving, the manufacturer takes all responsibility. That's one big reason why Tesla Insurance exists, they'd have to pay a fortune for insuring FSD.

    @@dougavery345 When FSD will drive without any human supervision, it will have to follow the law. In this case individuals can get away with breaking the rules much easier than corporations. Regulatory agencies can be very strict, and they don't just fine you, but force you to implement changes. They already made Tesla change trivial things many times in the name of safety. I can't imagine they'll let self-driving cars go over the speed limit. On the other hand when self-driving cars replace most human drivers, which will happen fast, speed limits, and most other traffic rules will become obsolete. An AI will be able to judge safety far better than a human bureaucrat. It will be able to take into account hundreds of factors in real-time, while rules have to be general an rigid.
