Mercedes EQB 2022 review - why ICE cars are DEAD!

.............................................................
Introducing the new Mercedes EQB!
If you think the EQB looks pretty familiar... Well, you'd be right! This all-new electric car is based on the petrol-powered Mercedes GLB. The question is, with so few 7-seater electric cars available at the moment, does the EQB offer enough to turn you away from the Tesla Model X or Y?
Well, for starters, let's check out the stats. There are two versions of the EQB available, and both come with two electric motors. We've got our hands on the range-topping EQB 350, which can deliver 292hp.
Both editions come with a 66kWh battery pack, and they're good for a claimed range of 257-miles.
Once you take a look inside, the interior is pretty familiar to all recent Mercedes releases. But that's no bad thing! It means you'll find two large infotainment screens throughout, along with high-quality materials throughout the cabin.
But is it worth the £52,000 starting price? And does it really offer enough to turn you away from choosing a Tesla instead? You'll have to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

@@chrisness No where near enough to compete with gasoline powered vehicles. But what’s far worse is the almost complete LACK of infrastructure in the United States to deal with EVERYONE owning an electric vehicle. People are already complaining when they have to wait for a charging station to open up. Imagine there being a line of cars waiting at EVERY CHARGER. Just 2 cars ahead of you would have you waiting 1.5 hours at the very least. At a gas pump you would have to wait about 7 minutes. We’re NOT EVEN REMOTELY READY for the public to start buying electric cars in mass. Imagine if all our cars were electric and the traffic suddenly slowed to a crawl because of a snow storm. That happens all over the country every single winter. Only, all those electric cars will run through their batteries much, MUCH faster than their gasoline powered counterparts, because using electric heat to keep all those occupants warm uses far more energy than is required to keep a gasoline powered vehicle idling to generate the same amount of heat.

Ice cars are not dead, they will be when batteries won't be fazed by temperature. Currently in Sweden and ev don't fare well in cold climates...40 electric cars stopped working on the highway because people needed to keep warm while stationary because of an accident. Temperature was -15°C outside. In the future I'm sure they'll fit cars with better battery technologies/chemistries, which is already available but car manufacturers do not consider them

I have a second hand leaf , and yes it cost me more than I've ever spent on a car before but it's paying me back handsomely, I'm saving over £1400 a year compared to my previous ICE car , so with three years ownership I've saved £4200 compared to a ICE car !

Great review as always. Only thing is that D+ is minimum regen, while D- is maximum regen. Also, I found the EQB interior to be fairly poorly made for its price. The ergonomics are fairly poor as well - not sure if it’s because I drove the 7 seater version. The rear seats are effectively benches that I get from small Japanese minivans. Finally, I have noticed a lot of (new) lower model Mercedes are literally rattling with very low mileage, including the test drive EQB I just drove today.

Most countries have laws where the brake lights come on during deceleration events over a certain threshold. This would mean it applies to both ICE cars and EVs. When an EV slows at the rate that a gas car would usually hit the brakes, it’s brake lights come on. Teslas do this extremely well for example. They even flash if you hit the brake hard enough.

There are quite a few eletric suvs with 7 seats. You perhaps have the Nio es8, the Hongqi E-HS9, the Maxus Euniq and lastly the Byd Tang, just to name a few. The starting price for these 4 suvs in Norway are: Nio around 43700£ without the battery (renting the battery) and 50400£ with the battery. The Hongqi is around 50500£. The Maxus is 33700£. And lastly the Byd is around 50500£. Prices in Norway for these in December 2021.

Bold statement - at £52,000 no normal person is affording that. UK average full time salary is £31,000. Most working class people are already priced out of new EVs and second hand EVs that aren't Zoes or Leafs. On top of that a third of the UK population live in property without off road parking, that rules those people out of being able to charge their potential EVs at home which is a serious barrier to adoption. So in this case unless you're in the 50k club, don't live in a terrace or flat, a lot of us are sticking to ICE cars.

Another informative and detailed review from Mat. I suspect, this little vehicle from MB, with all the bells and whistles will likely be more like 70+ by the time it's around. As far as range, interesting that they decided 65 KwH was enough and the "around 250" miles U.S. seems a bit light, but no dedicated platform so early adopters may be happy with around 250. It's almost the price of a loaded I-Pace (mid-70's) which gets the same mileage and oh so much nicer (5 seat version of course)!

ICE cars are not dead, it will take years, maybe a decade or more until infrastructures are good enough to replace them with EVs. People living in houses might have access to installing a wallbox and charge at home easily but many people leaving in flats and parking in the streets will not have that so easy. Also autonomy will still be a problem for a while and many places specially in not very populated areas will lack necessary infrastuctures for a while. Last not least prices are too high and I don't see that coming down so easily either. We'll see if there is capacity to build batteries to replace a zillion ICE cars
