MORE MERCEDCES!!!!! Today we do yet another W221 project, adjusting the wheel bearings on my 2012 S550. This is an often overlooked but important maintenance item to ensure your Mercedes stays in top top shape, and greatly extends the life of the wheel bearings. Super easy to do as well.
Note that 4Matic cars don’t have the same type of bearing - those are generally (if not always) sealed and require replacement when they fail.

    I replaced both front sides on my 2010 s550 because of buzzing sound and the sound won't go away, maybe you can help me out with this , perhaps you have more experience in this matter , thanks.

    Great video. Thank you. My question is I recently put on new rims & tires on my 2012 s550. The tire shop had to remove the front bearing caps in order for the rim center cap to snap into place. So now I am driving around with no bearing cap. While I’m not seeing any grease on my rims or anywhere below, I’m guessing this is not good nor correct to drive without the bearing caps in place. Have you heard of this before and what concerns and recommendations do you have. Thank you

    I've heard of tire shops/etc doing that but it is certainly not something I would do under any circumstances, since dirt, water (rain, puddles, etc), and other contaminants can get into the wheel bearings and destroy them in short order (something I've seen happen to friends' cars who were unknowing about the consequences of those caps being removed). If the wheels don't fit, I'd either get different wheels, or if you are set on those particular ones, see if it's possible and safe to machine the wheels to accommodate or to make custom caps, etc. On my Mercedes vehicles, I personally run OEM wheels always (whether original to the car or from a different model).     Excellent video to show how to deal with making sure the bearing run out is correct.. .Respectfully, I think it is a dis-service NOT TO REMOVE THE HUBS AND INSPECT THE WHEEL BEARINGS. WHEEL BEARINGS DO FAIL. GREASE SEALS ALSO WEAR OUT AND FAIL. HAVING GREASE FROM A FAILED SEAL LEAK ONTO THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS CAN CAUSE A FIRE. Additionally, since you are that far along already it is not hard to remove the caliper, and remove the "adjusting" retaining/wheel bearing nut you are adjusting the run out with to pull the hub off and then pull the inner seal to get to the inner bearing so you can have the bearings in your hand and be able to inspect them carefully. The outer bearing will be right there once the adjusting nut is off. You will have to pull the grease seal from the side opposite the adjusting nut the to access the inner bearing. Do not re use the old grease seal...prior to this job buy a pair of new wheel bearing hub grease seals. BEFORE CLEANING THE GREASE OFF WITH A SOLVENT Be sure to wipe the bearings so you can Look at each individual wheel bearing roller for "glitter", pitting and to make sure the color is still shinny chrome and not brown from being burnt. USE A CLEAN WHITE RAG when you wipe the bearings to see if any "glitter" is present... ANY glitter chips present further indicate bearing failure .If you clean them with solvent before wiping them...the glitter from a failing inner wheel bearing roller race will be washed away and a you wont be able to know that the inner part of the roller bearing is failing... What a shame to ONLY tighten the slack up and cause the under lubricated bearing to get hot and fail because you failed to Inspect and then PROPERLY PACK the bearings with fresh grease.....no one can see through the hub so pulling it all apart is the right way to make sure the bearings are good. Additionally wheel bearing grease does thin out over time and should be removed and new grease should be packed into the bearing...do a You Tube search for Hand Packing Wheel Bearings to get the proper technique to pack the bearings

    You can have play in the disc to hub, ideally a few wheel bolts inserted and tighten up

    totally right sir 👍 The instrument is measuring "total play" that operator mistakenly understand as bearing only... ouch! You can see the disk moving when only set-screw is installed. BEWARE about the meaning of data. Do insert 3 lug bolts to fasten disk-hub-bearing... good👍

    There's a nice front lift point on these straight in that I use a floor jack with. Drop down onto jackstands using the side lift points after that. Unfortunately no ETA on any more W221 videos, this one was totaled in March but I am in the market for another. Thanks for watching!

    Thhink you just made my day. I have shitty knocking sound i changed all swing arms and is still present i was lost for ideeas what could be but now i think is this. I dont own a dial like that can i just set it by ear?

    My W202 C280 is making a knocking noise in the front wheels at times when driving and sometimes my brake pads sound like they are touching the rotors. I have already changed both lower ball joints. I can feel play in the wheel when a rock it back in forth. Do you think this will be the problem? Great video by the way

    Hey. One question. Is it possible to feel a slight vibration at high speeds because of a bit of play in the bearing? I have no bad sounds, tyres and wheels are calibrated. Or could be a ball joint the cause. I have a little bit of play on my front right wheel the I tested it on vertical with hands at 12 and 6. Thank you.

    It certainly could be because of the wheel bearing. but could easily be a ball joint or control arm issue as well. In/out play that's very minimal is generally wheel bearing play, although ball joint or control arm bushing play can be mistaken for this depending on how much movement is happening and how much force is being put into the wheel/tire.     Hey brother Quick Question, I did the procedure yesterday. I test drove the car and it was good. Then today when I drove the car for 78miles to make sure the fix was permanent I heard the wheel bearings again! Could it be that I did not tighten down the clamp nut tight enough? Or that I need the little wheel bearing ? Or I need an entire new hub assembly? Please advise sir? Thank you very much!

    If you were hearing them before doing the adjustment, they may be toast. If the grease was totally black and you didn't regrease that may also contribute as well. That said, any of the aforementioned (tightness of clamp, needing a new bearing, or needing a new hub) could be possible as well. Thanks for watching!

    I have the exact same spec as you! Sorry to hear that yours was totaled. Quick question. Can this be done at all four corners? I have some minor vibrations and haven't had any luck eliminating them. Was going to try this next before going down the route of replacing bushings and whatnot.

    Very nice! It's almost a blessing in disguise that it got totaled, I was able to replace with a much more highly spec'd one a couple months ago for roughly the same price, with less miles to boot. This adjustment is front-only...definitely can/will eliminate vibrations if the bearings are loose, but depending on where you are at mileage-wise (100k or so) you may need some bushings at that point. Either way, should be done to save the bearings and keep them going...my W140 S-class uses the same style bearing and is at over 170k miles on original bearings. Thanks for watching!

    @@redonKiLaus I see. Thank you for the reply. What sort of spec did you end up with? I purposely kept my search to a lower optioned vehicle to keep the complexity level lower but now that I’ve seen some of the Designo interiors I am sort of now wanting that lol.

    @@josephshannon6703 The new one is the highest sticker 221 S550 I've ever seen, every option minus rear fridge and the rear massage seats, and the package that included Distronic and the lane keep, etc. Basic rundown is Diamond White on Designo Saffron Beige interior, piano black wood, granite (a.k.a. Star Galaxy) console trim, P02, pano roof, the more basic of the rear seat packages (reclining rear seats, heated and cooled, rear screens, but no massage or tables etc.), B&O sound, sport plus one, etc. Mid 130s sticker. There will definitely be videos on it, both maintenance and overview style, I just haven't had the time and still haven't detailed the car properly for a nice video showcasing it...weather in AZ is finally starting to cool down so I'm going to be doing more car projects here soon...stay tuned!

    Could the play in the bearing translate to a vibration in the steering wheel?

    It absolutely could, though there are other issues that translate to that as well. I've taken care of vibration issues firsthand on both old and newer S-class cars by tightening the bearings. Thanks for watching!

    @@redonKiLaus Thanks for the response. I have an appointment soon to drop all wheels and new tires off at a wheel refinishing shop. He'll mount and balance after all wheels are refinished. If the problem persists, I'll look into wheel bearings next.

    Ok. There is 0% possibility of removing those caps if you live in the North east. Nothing more frustrating than having to take the car in for something this small, but 30 straight mins of hammering is enough.

    I found that if I use a slide hammer with the one of the 3 way puller arms and gently slide hammer it with one hand holding the puller in the groove it will remove a stubborn cap. Use some penetrating oil and slowly work around the cap a little at a time and you will have much better luck than a screw driver and you won't destroy your cap, so you can re-use it.
