Not sure it was anticonsumerism. It seems to me like he was mocking consumerism, she was above it. No need to fight it since it is non trascendent. I feel she was mocking how small the consumerism person is. It is my guess that she would have laughed of watching her song being used in this commercial.

I was 12 when I first saw this ad on Australian TV, even then, I remembered thinking "how can something so utterly miss the point if irony, yet be so ironic?"

+CheesyTV I will take a 2013 bentley GTC all day long. In 97 A color TV and Mercedes was everything. Now they are all shit. Maybe last a year, ouch!

Mercedes Australia weren't targeting young buyers back in 97... "younger", maybe. Young buyers in 97 couldn't even afford a new Corolla. More likely targeting highly paid 40-somethings. $186 a week ($800 a month) was a lot back then... still is.

I see all these angry communists in the comments. You have to understand that Mercedes before 2000 was not about consumerism, it was a tough car than you can buy and drive it the rest of your life. I live in a place where people still driving Mercedes w110 and w123 and these cars still running, they are so well built!

I thought it was a fun catchy song and commercial. I blast it when driving 2 miles an hour in my Mercedes , so I can piss off the Karen's at the strip mall who are driving mini vans.
