Mercedes Benz Diesel EXTREME -20F Cold Start Winter W115

(Temp -19F)
((Look at my new cold start video, all the bugs are fixed))
I only paid 300 dollars for it, the guy thought it had a blown engine, but it turned out the timing on the injector pump was way off. I ended up taking the injector pump off and putting it on the right teeth, and doing the drip test, and etc.

You need to let the glow plugs go through a second 30-second cycle after the first one. See if that helps it start faster. At that temp, it's going to take some patience. The others are right about your starter too...you'll kill it with all that cranking.

Love the sound of those diesel's cranking and running, music to my ears! i have a 92' 190E and its usually parked in the garage with my 300E and my parents Vehicles. I am 17, but i love those mercedes ! The garage is heated but the 300 has a block heater which i had installed i have yet to do that to my 190. The New England weather gets brutal sometimes i use the block heater if i have to park outside in the cold. good luck with that diesel, should keep on going and going!

I love the sound of old diesels! 38 sec to glow is too long. Clean the battery terminals and check if the charging is good enough. You can also check the voltage on the glow plugs, must be the same as on the battery. There is another way to make quicker glowing, you can purchase a fast glowplug set with relays, this will reduce glow time by about 50%. Best of luck :D

If starts and dies only in the extreme cold, its because all the hot air that the glow plugs produce in the cylinders is pushed out the exhaust and it draws in cold air from the intake. Thats why I like grid heaters, they are a little better because it just warms the air as it flows into the intake and to all the cylinders. Otherwise you may be getting air in fuel lines or the injection system.

I think if you had of given it 1/8 to 1/4 throttle on the first attempt it would have stayed running when it initially fired off very strong. You lose pre-combustion chamber heat on these older heads pretty quickly after the cold ambient air starts rushing in.

mo1971fordcrew I live in Austria central Europe it get´s down to minus 25°C here in Vienna, but in the countryside top temperature was -28°C last winter.. Same thing preheat it 3-4 times before you crank, and DON´T EVER STOP CRANKING!!!!! Keep cranking until it runs, and then give it enough gas to hold idle RPM until you have the feeling idling is smooth! Nice car btw., these things won´t die so soon :-P

If its like the newer ones the glow plugs are operated off a timer, not any sort of sensor. It can help to glow them a second time before trying to start, as in glow, wait for the light, turn key off, glow again, then crank. From what I've experienced they don't appreciate added throttle, unlike polskaurbans comment, I don't like to have too much throttle on when I crank, just a little helps but its more like a half inch of throttle feed.

These engines are one of the best ever build! Only a few power but a lot of displacement and very quality made = longlife! If you want to start more easy at very cold temperatures, you can repeat the preglow without try to start a few times. It's never easy to start a diesel at these temperatures. If it's too hard to start use a preheater or simply a (heat) ventilation unit for little money. Good luck with the mercedes and look at the rust from time to time, thats the main problem =(

Glow plugs, if you run the old technology ones (original for this model, sort of a wire lope), then it is perfectly fine. If you fitted the newer type, it shouldn't take more than 20 seconds before you can start it.

  • @gotham61

I realize that you've now sold the car, but that was actually really good considering the temperature. Your one mistake was after you failed to keep it running on the first start, you tried to crank it till it started without glowing again. This will run down the battery really fast. If you lose idle on the first try, you have to turn the key off and start again with a new glow cycle. In conditions like that, a block heater is your friend, as is bringing the battery inside to keep it warm.

Motor mounts are shot, that's the clunking sound when cranking. Rubber mounts are probably sunken and hard as a rock. Glow plugs wont necessarily cycle back on right away after the first try, unless you wait a bit. Mine will do the same thing, quit after starting unless I give it some healthy pedal and manage to catch it. Adjust valves, change fuel filters and by all means DO NOT use starting fluid

I had air leaks, fuel dripping leaks out of the pump, and bad compression. But with enough battery I could always start both my 6.2 GM and 1.5 VW. The big block would need to be cranked until the bottom end oil warmed up! I think I got 3 starters in a couple years. Once I rebuilt the 1.5 it was amazing. Now I have a 82 300D.

What kind of glow plugs do you have? The old loop style? You can get the pencil type if you change the relay and that reduces starting time dramatically. Also, the bus wires, the insulators on the glow plugs, the glow plugs themselves, and the leads all rust, which limits your current to the glow plugs. I just cleaned mine because after 5 years of not running it would not start.

My 1988 MB 300E (petrol) starts just fine in -34°c. Diesel is always a diesel, my friend's Volvo V70 D5 didn't start up in minus 25c...

I am very impressed. Once a diesel is started it will not stall. But I am very impressed. Have you tried little tricks on the first start like stepping very easy on the accelerator vs. a hard step?

What have you done to winterize your very rust prone 240D?
