It‘s always funny to see people treating the diesels like something weird and odd. Here in Germany it‘s the complete oppsosite ;). But i think it‘s mostly due to the high prices for gas here, and not because we really think Diesels are superior. Great video!

Diesel cars has come along way in terms of performance and mpg. I own a mercedes CLS 350 AMG 3 ltr V6 it is a engineering master piece my experience of this car l have owned many performance cars but this CLS is by far the best the design of the CLS is painfully pretty the interior is gorgeous and the performance is thrilling a future classic for sure

I don't have a CLS of any kind, but I can tell you instantly why we've had M-B diesels since 1978 - apart from an ML350 and 380SL. Economy. Right now, our 2016 E-Class station wagon gets around 55mpg on a run, and the SLK250 gets way over 60.

I’ve owned it almost 1 1/2 years. Unfortunately the gearbox messed up on me however now I’ve sold it with the gearbox fault. Since then I’ve driven quite a few premium cars but nothing touches it by miles. The smoothness and ease of drive is better than a s class apart from the air suspension. I’m really contemplating on buying another one.

I’ve had the W219 320 cdi since 2011. I’ve done 130000+ miles in it. It has zero engine faults in that time. Amazing cars.

Great review , I have owned my CLS for over a year , and love it , have driven Cs Es and Ss but found this to be the perfect mix . I have been lucky to own some beautiful cars but this one seems to get some lovely comments from people.

This is a good review. I think you got a bit hung up on the diesel aspect. I have always owned big V6 or V8 petrols and i love the sound of petrols. However, now I need to drive a lot for work and will be swapping to a diesel just for work really. This will be something I will be looking at and I will use music to drown the diesel sound. Diesel have their place for petrol heads too, you get a good amount of performance for your money and it is still 100 times better than a tesla haha

whatever your view, only the first series (W219) will be and is already a classic. It initiated the four-door coupe hype and without it there was no Porsche Panamera etc. Mercedes created a lasting design in 2005 and the second series can only be a copy of the first generation, no matter what. Sadly, no V6 diesels were imported to Australia, if you own one keep it in good shape as prizes will at a premium soon.

I've owned one of these for about 18 months. thhe gearbox is a 7-speed. It's smooth and quiet. It's way better than the one on my 2007 Lexus GS300. Even in Economy mode it is more responsive and anticipates better the gear I'm gonna need. More road noise than the lexus, bt the tyres are a lot wider. Very comnfortable and relaxing. The diesel is very, very torquey. You soon get used to that, and it makes for a less thrashy drive than a petrol car, as you don't need high revs to start pulling away *hard*. No-one evr seems to mention the rear lights in reviews. I think they are way cool.

@@kamorata955 If I drive to the coast (~45mph on small roads), I can get the on-board computer to report 50-52mpg. On a motorway run at 75mph, it will give me 46-48mpg. Standard supermarket diesel fuel.

Here in the States the price is $4.39 a gallon I had a 2011 VW Jetta and could go 728 miles per tank 14 gallons 52 miles to the gallon. So if you drive one for 10 years you get use to the sound.

I am about to buy the mk 2 version change in 2011. A good all round luxury car. This mk 1 shape has gone out of favour because of its dated banana shape. They are quite cheap these days .but a great diesel engine and economical. Not slow either. Diesels are better for economy..torque..motorway cruising..high mileage Diesel fuel is more expensive in the uk unfairly but a diesel will do much more milage to a litre/gallon

.......and it was never a 5-speed auto gearbox! The earlier models were 7-speed, subsequently 9-speed auto gearboxes. For goodness’ sake......if you are setting yourself up as a car reviewer, that sort of information is fundamental !!

I'm from the UK and think diesels are good and practical but, like you I also have a few high performance cars and I struggle with the sound of the diesel engine when its put under load, especially pulling up a hill. I was hoping modern diesels engine design would have solved this, but apparently not!

It was Jeremy Clarkson who made the drooping banana comment about the first series. As you mention, the second series is far less banana-like

  • @alfetta78franchino

Yes, the second series of the CLS has less "banana shape" but it has also lost it's very distinctive personality. When you see a C219 on the street you can always say, at first glance, it is a CLS. The same thing was its interior, very very unique. The second series is certainly the better car but it has lost his dramatic appareance. Talkoing about your review I would say you should inform better before recording. You talked a lot abaout the style of the body of this car but never said it has the C218 name because Mercedes considers it as a four door coupè. This explains the only 4 seats, the frameless doors and the design. The gearbox had 7 gears already on the first model, not 5. Yes a diesel engine is a bit a nonsense on a luxury car but if you travel a lot you can also appreciate the vantage of very low fuoel consumption and great torque where you really need it.
