Question is why are you trying to disconnect the computer? To remove or replace it?

My check engine light came on once I replaced the old with the new. I went back and double checked everything still on

Check engine light can come on for 100 different reasons. You should use an OBDII reader to see the specific faults.

Generally around 12-30k miles or once a year which ever comes first. Replace more often for place with a lot of airborne particles.
