Mercedes 722.6 NAG Mechanical Operation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video covers the mechanical operation and the powerflow of the Mercedes 722.6 RWD transmission used in many RWD and 4WD vehicles. This transmission is also commonly known as the NAG1 for Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles. These transmissions are still offered in 2021 models and arrived on the scene in 1996!! In this video, I cover the clutches and gearset, then I go through the powerflow gear by gear. This video is intended to teach a student or a technician that's new to automatic transmissions the mechanical operation of this transmission.
Accompanying this video are other videos including the 722.6: (note: if there are no links, it's because they're coming soon)

Really great how you demystify these auto boxes, which I used to think were rocket science. Thanks.

Great video presentation - very many thanks. I've never seen inside a transmission without brake bands.

Great video, couldn't have understood without it. BTW i guess the reason for the common 3->4 flare on this box is the lack of a sprag for that shift. B2 is released and if K3 isn't applied fast enough it flares

Yes sir, you're correct. That shift is pretty sensitive without the help from a sprag. If you watch the improvements video, you'll see that the overlap valve in the valve body has issues and sometimes causes the flare. Thanks for watching!

What would happen if you put a switch on the lock up converter solenoid to prevent rumble strip noise on the 2006 T1N Sprinter while trans is cold and switch on when fully at operating temp. I'm thinking this might work to eliminate that noise and resistance on a lot of sprinters that have the rumble strip issue without doing the modification to the side plate just turn it off when cold reason I say that my only does it when cold when warmed up it seems to be fine would replacing the torque converter be a better option $250,000 mi only on a 2006

At the end of the video on the service manual page, are the clearances shown correct? For example the K3 5 double friction discs has clearance of (2.5-2.9mm) in other manuals it says (0.7-2.0mm) I have a 722.6 flare of 3-4 with clearance in the k3 set of 2.7mm, this could be the one reason?

I have a 2000 mercedes C 230 Kompressor that only has first gear or second and reverse, its stuck in lymp mode the reverse lights dont work and the gear selector next to the clock is lit up but blank it only goes 40 mph and pulls good but no gear changes i toof the valve body out and rplaced the conducter plate and put 8 quarts of new fluid but still same thing, i put a used transmission controller in and the car wont start the starter is locked out Ive got 10 codes set like p702 -o94 P 1525 P 1999-40 , I just cant seem to figure out what is wrong with this car The shifter has a rheostat thing that moves with the shifter, this car sat for 7 years so it could be anything

I was just reading in the comments about the 3-4 flare these boxes can develop. That's a bit scary. Is it an inherent fault, that dooms these boxes to failure or at the least an expensive repair, or is it a relatively simple fix and not worth worrying about? I've been thinking of buying an old 2000 Benz CL500, which I believe has the 722.6 box. Should I avoid doing so in favour of a later model with the seven speed? Thanks

Anyone know if another brand uses the same yoke the 2010 AWD V6 Charger uses to connect the trany to transfer case? Short hollow tube with gear on outside, mine are stripped and Mopar quit making, pick n pull for this part not an option...

I have a 2001 mercedes C320 with 722.6 transmission. I changed the conductor plate but the two sensors still show different reading on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. Could it be a defective "new" conductor plate or it is something else. Thank you
