Mercedes 508D - Electric Fan Installation

In this video we will show you how Björn changed our broken original radiator fan to an electric fan (Spal VA18-BP70 / LL-86A 24V).
Here you will find some pros and cons of having an electric fan:
So, why are we changing the original fan to an electric one? Well, first of all, we need to change the old fan in any case because it is broken. The electric fan we chose has a better cooling effect compared to the original one.
Also, we are planning to install a switch to be able to turn the fan on and off. You could also install a temperature sensor that will control it automatically, which we might do in the future. But for now, we figured since we are going to the northern regions of Sweden and Norway, the switch will allow us to choose when to run the fan. For example, in such extreme temperatures like -20°C (-4°F), the old fan would always be on but the electrical one we will be able to turn off. That way the engine won't get even colder, and we will get better heating efficiency in the cabin.
The only disadvantage in this case is that we will always have to remember to turn the fan on and off.
But since this fan is more efficient, it will cool the engine even more during warmer months. If you are driving very slow, like in a queue, for example, the engine might overheat because the original fan would be spinning too slow, but with the electrical fan that won't be an issue.

    Very nice! I think it will make less noise then the original fan! Im tempting to do this on my 409 bus (petrol) from 1975. Good to see that is also works without sensor, and i think the fuel consumption also will be better now!

    Thank you so much! Yes it´s still working 😅, The new fan works well we plan on putting a temp sensor to control it but for now we routed it via a switch so we just turn it on when we drive it also works. 🤗👍

    Nice job with that new fan! My right ear got a bit lonely towards the end of the video though! What editing software do you use? You can separate stereo tracks in most editors and copy the one that's working into the other to create a mono voiceover track for future reference

    Hi Bjorn and Katja, how are you doing, I see you exchange the fan, something I had in mind already for a long time. Where did you find the fan? And at which place you will put the censor? I am sorry for you to see another dog so Rip Balthazar. That must be hurting. Sorry to see that. I think it’s time to have another beer together at the laundry by the washing machines 🤣 as we did the first time we met at the camping. Take care and ofcours we will meet somewhere sometime

    Hi Arie! we are fine we hope you are as well! Yes we changed it but we bought a overpowered model so we now think it sounds a bit too much so make sure to get the correct one for your airflow needs. censor? do you mean the heat sensor for the relay? we haven´t installed one yet i just use the temp gauge so far😅😅 Thank you! Yeah we miss him terribly. Yes looking forward to our next washing time beer! where does your next adventure take you? we´re probably stuck on gotland working this summer though.

    Could you make a video how much it costs to drive the bus ( repair costs ) many people say it is very expensive to drive classic cars, because the parts are rare and exspensive🤔

  • @Beelzebus

    @Beelzebus

    2 жыл бұрын

    We´ll definitely do a video about that in the future! A lot of people have been asking about it. We so far during these 3 years have only encountered one issue which we couldn´t fix ourselves and that unfortunately was in Norway so the mechanics charged us a fortune😬 but the part we replaced only cost about 500sek. All the parts we bought and replaced on Beelzebus have been very cheap if you compare to newer cars! I think it depends a lot on which kind of classic car you have, also probably depends on how old or rare the model is because our bus is from 1984 and there´s some parts that can´t be found already so then you´ll have to fabricate them your self or find another solution. 🤗👍

    Tjenna Brolle! 12V bussarna brukar ha glödning men vi har 24V systemet så vi har ingen glödning utan en starkare start motor istället men den brukar vara mycket piggare jag brukar trampa en gång på gaspedalen innan jag skall starta så hoppar den igång direkt =).
