Mercedes 4-Matic Differential & Transfer Case Service

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I walk you thru the process of servicing the differentials and transfer case on a Mercedes 4-Matic AWD vehicle. I demonstrate on my own 2006 Mercedes ML 350, but the process will be very similar on other Mercedes 4-Matic vehicles. Thanks for watching, please subscribe to the channel so my video can reach and help more Mercedes owners.

    On the transfer case, you should fill with clean fluid and drain a 2nd time. i know your wasting a 15$ wt of fluid but this needs to be flushed more than the axle does, usually fixes chatter on turns eith a good flusg

    Ended up selling it, I would’ve liked to of fixed it but it had some other issues too and I didn’t have time for it to be a project vehicle. The guy that bought it was going to fix up for his daughter.

    Hey Matt! I'm wondering if i just skip changing the oils just to avoid such surprises, what do you think?

  • @CarswithNash

    @CarswithNash

    Sorry but I don’t think that’s a very responsible approach… I was feeling a vibration through my steering wheel that I had hoped was worn CV axles but I was not that surprised to find this and I certainly would not have gotten very much further anyways. There were a lot of signs that my vehicle had not been maintained or cared for that well and I blame that on the failure more than the vehicle. In a nutshell, do proper maintenance so you can avoid having a problem like this.

    Blocked vent on the transfer case will give it pressure

  • @CarswithNash

    Could be but it was also very overfull, I collected more than the capacity just in my pan and half of what came out missed it. I was thinking maybe the transmission was somehow pressuring it or there was a seal between the transmission and transfer case that was leaking and allowing ATF into the transfer case. I ended up selling the vehicle a short time later as a mechanic special, the guy that bought it was going to fix it up for his daughter. Then I made the terrible mistake of replacing it with a Hyundai!🤦‍♂️

    Do you have any videos showing the transmission the fluid change?

  • @CarswithNash

    @CarswithNash

    Жыл бұрын

    No I do not because that is not something that can really be done at home. You need to monitor the transmission temperature on a scan tool and then there is a level plug in the pan, but it’s not as simple as just having it run out, it needs to stream out at a certain rate at that exact temperature. Not something I have the expertise or equipment to do. There are some videos of people doing it “cowboy style” in their driveway, but that is a gamble I would not take personally.

    Hey Matt... Would be beneficial if you can also put the part numbers

  • @CarswithNash

    @CarswithNash

    The problem with that is different years may use a different fluid, so I don’t want to make that recommendation that might work out perfectly for my 2006 and then somebody with a 2012 which would be very similar to service but might use a different fluid… So it becomes a liability if I recommend something as the fluid to use and then it doesn’t work out because of a change up. The safest thing is to go to your nearest Mercedes dealer and buy the fluid straight from the parts counter and then they will ask you all the important details about your vehicle to make sure you get the right stuff. You might pay a bit more but then you know you have the right stuff and if you do the service yourself you will still save a ton of money.

    Do u know how to fix the sunroof?

  • @CarswithNash

    @CarswithNash

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry no, I never use sunroofs and never had an issue with mine either. If it is still working and just not closing properly it might just need recalibrating, you can do that by holding the button for three seconds after it opens all the way and then close it again and hold the button for three seconds after it closes all the way, that sets the limits for it and allows it to work smoothly.

    My ml350 2006 whine from The front differential. O think it's Bad too. Did The oil make any difference?

  • @CarswithNash

    @CarswithNash

    3 жыл бұрын

    No the oil didn’t help any, I’m going to park it soon because I’m scared it will lock up on me, it seems to be getting a little worse all the time and vibrating through the steering wheel and in the floorboards. From what I understand now this is a common issue on these early ML’s, apparently Mercedes used an inferior bearing which does not hold up, apparently they upgraded that bearing on the newer ones but I do not know when the cut off is or if those ones are even cross compatible to our older ones. I think I might be rebuilding this one so stay tuned, I will certainly do a video on whatever I do to fix it.

    Never use jack stands when jacking up your car as they could potentially save your life if your jack fails.

  • @CarswithNash

    @CarswithNash

    It would actually be extremely dangerous to use jack stands to support a vehicle parked on soft ground. In any case, I had this vehicle driven up on blocks, so I don't understand what your point is. How could it fall on me when I could easily crawl under it before I put the jack under?

    @@CarswithNash okay, I'll play. First, I own a W164 ML500 and have done all the repairs on this car myself...from changing the engine mounts, to replacing the starter, to most recently changing out the steering rack, which requires the removal of the front differential, just to name few. All these jobs are a monumental pain to do and require vast amounts of disassembly to get to the part being replaced. As such, I have spent plenty of time under my ML. So if you have so much room to get under the car without jacking it up, then why did you jack it up? Having done a fluid change on both differentials and the transfer case, I find it incredulous that you easily reached the fill plugs without raising the vehicle. Moreover, anyone that's worked on cars for a long a while knows that jacks fail from time to time. Why? Because they employ a hydraulic system to raise the vehicle. That system is only as it strong as its seals. And when they fail, that jack will lose pressure and go down quickly. That's the reason you use jack stands because they're not dependent on a hydraulics. Not using jack stands when you raise a vehicle and are working underneath is something only a Darwin award candidate would do. But have at it my friend. Hope you never have to find out the hard way.
