On Kool Keith's second verse for "Ain't it good To You", he dissed Rakim's "Follow the Leader" lyrics. Dope. Moe Love's needle skipped on "Delta Force". They kept the take on the album. Dope. For lack of better terms, Ultra's "Critical Beatdown" album changed my life. Lol. Spectacular #RGM

It’s amazing how hip hop terms definitions changes. Back in the day a freestyle was a rap that just really wasn’t about anything subject wise it was the rap version a free writing. And if you didn’t write your rhyme first it was called going of the top of my head. But now anytime someone don’t write they call it a freestyle.

Did I miss something? (House D.J. Jive 5 from B & B at the Harlem Karate Inst.) I first met Ced Gee, Kool Keith and the rest of the groups at the Wild Style concert down town. Too bad I missed the World Tour at Manchester and Europe. However, I took many photos and video's of them. They are down to earth, and just like Doug E Fresh and Red Alert, the most nice and respectful Entertainer's I have ever work with. When Mike the Millionaire hired me to take pictures of them at the El Cortez Club, I heard their famous hit "EGO TRIPPING" on Next Plateau Records. I told Mike that's the Record I played at all my parties. Didn't even know it was them. We had the best of times after that. Can't waite until the next tour. I hope not to miss that. High Five! Thank you Jayquan.

The Foundation: If you listen closely to Break North it contains the sample "Fly like an Eagle" from The Steve Miller Band. They used half a bar of it. Its the background sound that loops in between the drum beat as they are rhyming. Also Ain't it good to you is a jab at Rakim who used the same beat around the same time.

"Ego Trippin came out in 86 but it didn't appear in stores here until early 87, that's when I copped it. " Bait" I got on the "Red Alert Goes Berzerk" comp that didn't come here until 1987 by that time it was OLD!! LOL... I thought Ego came out before "Bait". I got "Mentally Mad/Funky" right between Ego and Bait. Plus the version of it on the comp didn't have the 4th Kool Keith verse. So my intro to UltraMagnetic happened in 1987.

Thanks for the great lesson JayQuan!! Best series I've seen on YoutUbe for a long time!!! You're brilliant for this!! All about the music, no bullshit!! Just education. I think you went too hard on Ced Gee for his voice on Four Horsemen though...I always enjoyed his verses on there...it's a dope contrast to Keith's high pitch...gives gravity . Peace and keep the great work coming!!

I'm 21 y old but Ultramagnetic is without no doubt my favourite Hip Hop ever. As you said, they just so different from any other Hip Hop group but that's what makes them so special. Their Rhymes together with the Production, matches just so perfectly. Hope that the Kool Keith lesson comes soon.

Respect & Gratitude to Jayquan for these Hip-Hop gems. Keep ‘em comin’!!! I’d Love to see SCHOOLY D!! Also…Audio 2 (and ALL the First Priority label heads), Shinehead, Asher D and Daddy Freddy, EPMD, Redman, LL, Flavor Unit (Chill Rob G, Lakim Shabaz!!) & The 45 King…man!! What a blessing to have grown up when we did, huh?!! In addition; since I came up outside Washington DC, any chance that some Go-Go (the less talked about/known step child of Hip-Hop!) artists could get a ‘lil Love? Nuff Respect!!

I hung out with Kool Keith a couple times. I was rapping and producing in LA in the late '90s. During UMC's initial outing, I had been living with my pops and he was super strict. This meant that I missed out on lots of rap during 86-89. So upon meeting him I didn't really know who he was. His personality in-person matches his rhymes. I think I met him when I was hanging out with Raheem of the Furious Five. Raheem is a nut! Hilarious and we smoked a lot of chronic mixed with Morrocan h-ash.

Ultra/ Keith are the BEST....Lyrical imo Kool Keith is above all....Ultra just had it all, the Paul C connection, the art and creation...avantgarde....I got all the early stuff being there form the mid 80s.... interviewed Keith along with Kurt in mid 90s after their concert,,,,, took loads of pictures with keith, such a humble guy, anyway it was all so cool, remember Krown Rulers/ Camden Philly connection with Ultra...?

Great work as always JayQuan. We was lucky in London, in 1990 we had Tim Westwood dropping a few tracks we thought were going to be on the second Ultra LP, only to be disappointed when it finally dropped a couple years later. I thought you might have mentioned Paul C, I wonder if he had been around for the 2nd LP how it might have sounded.

@The Foundation Yes Sir, I do love the Ultra Magnetic track with the Star 🌟 Wars loops, like the X-Wing Fighter ship. They looped the engine noise through out the whole track, and it was musical, pure genius, and the end with Luke Skyway ( we’re going in full throttle, that ought to keep them fighters of our back….)
