Mental Health In The Media: Good Intentions, Bad Outcomes? | Doctor Mike

Mental health can be a tricky topic to cover in media let alone on KZread. Lately, I've noticed a huge uptick in these stories and many if not all of them have great intentions. However, I have seen some questionable information floating around and it's leading me to share this concern with you guys.
Even when someone wants to do something good it can lead to some unwanted consequences. Take for instance the peanut allergy situation. Parents tried protecting their children from peanuts so much so that it actually caused a spike in allergies. Now we know exposing children early on to peanuts is beneficial. This is just one example of when good intentions can lead to bad outcomes.
The mental health conversation is getting a lot of buzz lately and patients have come into my office having what I call anxiety on anxiety. They are literally being anxious about their feelings of anxiety (even when they are totally appropriate). Also, many have self-diagnosed themselves from media (often incorrectly) and it takes a great deal of work and convincing to get them to let those thoughts go. Diagnosing a mental illness is complex and takes time. This is why it is best to go see your doctor to get a full examination and have an open discussion about what's going on in your life.
If you or a loved one is in immediate danger calling 911 and talking with police may be necessary. It is important to notify the operator that it is a psychiatric emergency and ask for an officer trained in crisis intervention or trained to assist people experiencing a psychiatric emergency.

Kathrina therapists have literally saved my life on multiple occasions. I can’t help but wonder if you or someone you know may have had a negative experience with therapy. If that is the case, I’m sorry that happened. Therapists are human too, and are not perfect, and not every therapist is right for every person. It’s a complicated process, but if you find the right fit, it can (as I said before) be literally life saving. Hope things are okay with you! Have a good day/night!

As a psychology student, thank you! Mental health is a glorified thing at the moment to the point where people think they should have something wrong if everyone else does. 70% of people who have a mental disorder go undiagnosed and its hard to believe that so many don't get help when others are using it as an excuse for everything. If you think you need help please talk to someone. Thank you for bringing this to peoples attention.

I agree so much with the victimisation concept you're talking about. On the other hand, if we take the KZreadrs population, fame and other factors are an ideal environment for developing stress and further symptoms, if one doesn't know how to work with his/her emotions. I'm surprised that there isn't yet a study about that... Or is there and I missed it? I'd be very interested in researches based on "symptoms of a KZreadr"... (ex psychology student)

  • @evalovesbubbles

As a psychologist I often dislike the way mental health is dealt with in the media. Although often it is with good intentions, it can be stigmatizing and often lacks depth. When I read through a list of symptoms I often feel like I recognize myself in some of them, but a big requirement of most mental disorders is that this requires to have a serious impact on your day to day life. When you feel nervous talking to your boss, this is a normative fear, it might pass quickly and even though it might be annoying, that does not necessarily mean it interferes sufficiently with your life to really be a mental health disorder. There is a lot of nuance in mental health, nothing is black or white, everything is a different shade of grey, a continuum we are all on somewhere.

Yeah, I wish I had him as a doctor. I have a great neurologist, but almost every other type if doctor I've had has just been so, I dunno, not there? Like they treat the patient like they're a cow, pig, chicken, or something, not a human. Especially true of the psychologists and psychiatrists I've had. I had a psychologist who told me that I should have sex with a 15 year old (I was 18 back then, and I told him how upset I was at her sexual advances). Why? "Perhaps it would relieve you of anxiety." Umm... Oh, a psychiatrist I had ended up on the news. My parents yelled out to me to get me to come to the room to see what was up, and guess What? Turned out he was a pedophile, and had been taking advantage of teen girls' mental problems to do terrible things. He's in prison still and he should remain there for life. I hate rape as much as I do murder. Both destroy lives. But pedophiles are even worse, like the most gruesome species of rapist. Ugh. So thank God I'm past my mental issues because I just don't trust those doctors anymore, though *I understand very well they're not all that way,* I've just had so many that were like that, I'm very wary of them now. Besides, I have many female friends, I get along with girls better than I do with guys and it's not sexual at all, I respect them greatly and they know I do. So I talk to them and so many have revealed they were abused by mental health doctors... sometimes counselors at school. It really upsets me that anyone would ever consider for even a millisecond to hurt a child, or worse to do sexual things to them! These girls are in their early to late 20s, so they're not kids anymore (I'm 30), but I still think of them back when they were kids and it gets to me so much. I'm glad they trust me, though. See, so many of them are so traumatized that they feel either ALL it mostly all men are evil and will do those things without a second thought. I'm glad that I can be there to prove that isn't true. It makes me happy they believe me and trust me, and we've become good friends. Through that friendship, a lot of them have actually either married or begun dating (good guys) again since they have realized not all men are terrible monsters. If I can help people, I will always do so.

As someone with some years of Experience as a nurse, I would be more concerned about a newer nurse without anxiety or stress. :) being a nurse is hard! It's a lot of responsibility that many outside of healthcare don't understand. There's a ton of information crammed into you in a comparatively short time & you have to be able to apply it, not just memorize it. It is perfectly normal to have anxiety as a nurse. It will lessen as you gain Experience, but there will still be cases it pops up over the course of your career. It's normal flight or fight response. The adrenaline rush serves you to increase your awareness and thinking and move quickly. Just remember to utilize self care practices to minimize burn out. Good luck!

@@bf5821 Thank you. I genuinely care about every patient I see in mental health crises, as well as those who are doing well on a good treatment plan, and even the people in society who need help but can't afford it, or are afraid of the stigma. I wish, as Dr. Mike said, that what is being portrayed was more helpful than it actually is currently, because we really need more people that are kind & compassionate towards one another, and help their friends and family to seek the help and/or treatment they need in order to begin to feel like themselves again, rather than being trapped in their own bodies. We need more people that recognize warning signs of depression and suicidal ideation. And we need more people to stand up and say "no this is not something you can just 'get over' and move on from, this is a disease just the same as diabetes, or COPD, and it needs treatment just as medical diseases do." Yes the treatments for medical vs mental health are obviously different, but they are still both diseases that need treatment and help from medical professionals. Also, we need more people that dont accuse someone as using their disease as an excuse for a special privilege.

It's so frustrating to see this happening. It takes so much hard work to feel better when you're actually dealing with mental health issues. I've been in therapy for three years now. I'm doing way better than before, but it sure cost me a lot of time and hard work to get where I am now and people told me to just 'get myself together'. I tried to because I hated feeling what I felt, but it sure was incredibly difficult. To see people talking about it so lightly while mental health issues throw you in such dark places is maddening, to say the least.

Thank you for this video, Mike. I've struggled with suicidal idealizations since I was very young, and have attempted so in the past. For the last year I have been seeking psychiatric help, including counseling, group sessions, contacting the Canadian Mental Health Association, and doing my best to speak to my family and friends about my thoughts and compulsions. While I do still struggle, the small changes I have made in that year are remarkably different from who I was and how I thought just twelve months ago. I encourage anyone with mental illness to do their best and seek out professional aid, understanding that things will not magically be cured or undone and that personal commitment is required. Having a mental illness is not a badge of honour or a trend; these are serious issues that need to be addressed by the professionals we can contact in our lives. Using your mental illness as an excuse to avoid personal responsibility or to indulge in grandstanding will only hurt you more in the long-term. Please seek out a professional and do your best to help yourself.

Thank you so much for saying this! I've believed this for years, but no one was saying it. I've had to clarify this to friends who are simply going through a tough time and feeling exactly what they should be feeling, but think they have a disorder. Mental health and mental illness are confusing topics because we all feel the same feelings, but it boils down to how severely and consistently you're feeling them. You can be anxious with out having an anxiety disorder. You can be depressed with out having depression. You can be moody with out being bipolar. However, your feelings, whatever they are, are valid solely because you're feeling them and you don't need to have a disorder to reach out for help. We all have mental health and it should be taken care of just like our physical health. I mean, doctors don't only see patients with a chronic disease. So why do so many people think they can only see a therapist if they have a mental illness?

J No I agree with you. That therapist was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful. I understand that her specialty is in self harm and eating disorders but she still would have had to learn about ASPD in college. She should know enough to at the very least not call them “icky”, but apparently because it’s not her specialty she can say whatever she wants about other mentally ill people, no matter how offensive 😒 it’s just basic knowledge not to demonize mentally ill people especially as a therapist- I honestly don’t understand why she thought it was okay. If he got an actual therapist who knows what the hell they’re talking about, then they would’ve stopped him from over dramatizing it. She fed into the “fear” and “horror” of these people, which was one of the reasons he over dramatized it- he thought it was acceptable and honest (it’s not, but e thought it was bc a professional wrongly said it was). I do fault him for getting a therapist who doesn’t know the illness- he should have known better. And the therapist should’ve been a bigger and more professional person and said “look this isn’t my specialty and I’m not knowledgeable enough for this”. Therapists can (and should) turn people away if they feel like they can’t help them or if there’s someone better. I’m still subscribed to Shane, and still love him, but this was a major fuckup. I have a friend who’s a sociopath and he’s an amazing person. He grew up in a bad household and then developed ASPD due to the trauma. He became violent like his father, but he didn’t like it, so he convinced his mom to put him in foster care until he was in a better mindset. Now he’s home and doing a lot better, and I’m really happy for him. He still has cognitive empathy so he knows when people are hurting- he just doesn’t care. But if he saw someone get hit by a car, he would help them because it’s the right thing to do and he wants to be normal. If I, his friend, or someone else who he loves a lot, got hit by a car he would feel a bit of empathy. It’s a spectrum so he does feel some empathy for the people he loves, and when he found out my ex mistreated me he was furious and wanted to protect me. He and I are similar in that we both would do anything for our friends, even if that means putting ourselves in danger (sociopaths don’t care about their safety, and I value others safety over my own lol). If that therapist said that shit to my face and called him “icky” I would 100% go off on her. I get it if people have been fed lies and are just wrong like Shane- it’s the people who are SUPPOSED to be credible sources but are actually spreading bs that are the biggest problem. Sorry for my rant- it got a lot less coherent the more emotional I got lmao. 😂 thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Thank you for this. A lot of people claim they have anxiety disorders nowadays when they don’t - and it reduces the anxiety disorders I have to “feeling anxiety” when it’s so much more than just feeling anxiety (panic attacks, gastrointestinal issues, consistent fatigue, not leaving the house for days on end). Anxiety disorders are much more complex and worse than just feeling anxious.

Yep. The worst for me is when the comparisons start, they say "oh I also have anxiety but I'm not constantly tired from it, are you sure it's not something else" when they don't even have a disorder in the first place, just regular exam or speech anxiety.

I hate this. I live in a constant state of dread and have occasional panic attacks. I cope really well with it, so I always wonder if people think that I just "feel anxiety." From a logical standpoint, I can see that whatever set off my panic attack shouldn't be that bad, but I can't control it.

This is so important. It's wonderful that you're outlining both sides of it. It's great that people are making discussing mental health less taboo, it's important to appreciate and respect the balance. Hey man, I just want to say that your videos have been a great source of information and entertainment for me recently. I spent the last 20 years not going to the doctor, feeling like I was invincible, and probably drinking and smoking too much. In August I ended up in the ER and found out I had Colitis (easily cured with some drugs fortunately), but that experience really made me start to respect my health, and the folks in the medical community and what they do for us. And part of the whole experience was terrible anxiety over my health that I was not used to feeling for a long time. But I've learned to control it, and deal with it, in part from how accesible and fun your videos are. So thanks very much for what you do in front of, and away from the camera. :)

He’s so right with the exposure part. I’ve suffered from OCD for pretty much all my life. When I went to therapy I learned that running away doesn’t help the problem and I had to confront my compulsions head on and actively not do them despite what my brain said. I still do compulsions daily just because the ones I couldn’t fight off are very small and happen in a split second but I’m okay with it bc they don’t control my life anymore. On the other hand, I’ve had dermatillomanic tendencies all my life as well and when I started taking Zoloft (for my obsessions; therapy wasn’t helping to fight them off) it made it worse and I started to actively pick at my hands. It only stopped when I switched to a different medication and the scabs healed enough where I couldn’t open them again. In this situation this issue has remained dormant and undealt with. Whenever I have scabs or pimples I still pick at them until they scar deeply and it’s harder to treat because since I don’t have as many opportunities to expose myself to that particular compulsion it’s harder to fight off. In short some of the best advice, as simple and demeaning as it may sound, is to just *not* do your compulsions. Don’t automatically turn to medication, look at your other options first. Therapy helped me so much better than meds alone would have

As someone who used to be a mental health practitioner THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!! You are absolutely right on all points! People should not let their mental illnesses be an excuse to hold them back from their potentials! Convincing clients to believe their mental illness does not have to control their lives was probably the hardest obstacle to overcome, but when they did finally realize it, the road to recovery was soooo much smoother. And the working relationship between a prescribing physician and therapist is so incredibly important to help clients find the right meds at the right dosage, so people should not be discouraged when the first round of meds doesnt work. Therapists should be educating clients on what to expect from meds (to the best of their knowledge) and referring them to their physicians if there are any issues or if the client has questions that are out of a therapist’s league. Thank you doctor mike! You are awesome!! ❤️

Several great points made throughout. I’m all for raising awareness, but making sure the information being put out is factual would have a far more positive impact. Your point about personal accountability resonated the most strongly with me. I think nowadays there seems to be some hesitance in telling people who are struggling with mental health that they are responsible (to a degree of course) for improving their quality of life. In my experience, it’s actually quite empowering to be reminded how much control you have over acquiring healthy habits and that not everything needs to remain as it is - both in regards to mental health and difficult situations in general :) Thanks for spreading positive content based on facts as always!

Farrah Farmer irresponsible one. Mental illness is not a joke, and even if he was to make the society gets comfortable with the fact that sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies are pretty much everywhere, he still uses that overdramatic, adrenaline inducing sfx and themes. Maybe the main reason is because I don't understand his sense of humor, my fault for misunderstanding. But Doctor Mike proves his point and that's basically why I don't find myself liking any of Shane's videos. He can't plead ignorant while documenting how seriously dangerous a psychopathic person can be.

Thank you for talking about this and informing people that feeling anxious is different from having an anxiety disorder. As someone who has been diagnosed with GAD and IBS it sucks to see that people take mental health so lightly and think having a disorder equates to feeling anxious when something big or life changing is occurring. A lot of people fail to understand that people with disorders suffer from being able to live day to day sometimes because mental health issues can be debilitating and can also affect people physiologically. Let's not even talk about the backlash when I finally went to therapy. This video really hit a topic that has been bugging me and hit home, because as you said, the media has brought a light to mental health that was necessary however it seems so far a lot of the content produced has bad outcomes resulting in people not understanding what their peers are actually going through. Then there are the people who are going through their life and still feeling like others are making a joke out of something that shouldn't be. Anxiety is so much more than just feeling anxious, depression is so much more than just feeling sad, and this perspective others have needs to be broadened. Thank you for addressing this. It’s a good reminder that we should feel certain emotions throughout our circumstances. I have PTSD from a school shooting but I’m not going to let that cripple me from being in school, learning, and being involved in society. Thank you.

Noelle Romberger I feel like you should be allowed to be hurt by it though. How can someone expect you to be 100% there after experiencing trauma I can’t even imagine?

Thank you for addressing this hot topic, Dr. Mike. Some people are self-diagnosing because this is being talked about. Sadly, they definitely used this as a handicap to get a way with something or justify certain actions.

Mudda Army I think using qualifiers like a lot are unfair as I don’t think this phenomenon is as common as you’d think considering that about 8% of the general population can be diagnosed with major depressive disorder just to name one.

Thank you. I feel like there is a lot of people self diagnosing and labeling themselves and others. Life has problems and ups and downs and I feel like instantly trying to diagnose yourself with a serious mental illness isn't proactive. I have struggled with depression since I was a kid. However I know that it's important to see a trained professional.

As someone with several mental illnesses, this video is so important. I've met so many people belittling mental illness or claiming they have an anxiety disorder when they are nervous for an event or having adhd because they have a lot of energy one day, etc. A lot of people nowadays react to mental disorders dismissively, saying "oh, everyone has some disorder" and it makes me feel like I don't deserve my medical treatment. I really liked this video and it was very informative. Thank you so much!

Thank you! There is a lot of misinformation out there related to mental health. Can you talk more about the mental health system in general? I don't think people realize how hard it is to recover from chronic mental health issues with how services are set up these days and the barriers insurance can put up to make it difficult accessing services. I work in an inpatient unit and see the same people come in or see people with multiple hospitalizations; Emergency departments act like a revolving door for those suffering from acute mental health crises. Also the burn out as a hospital social worker is so real - a video on how to avoid burn out within the helping profession would be helpful too!

Word. Thank you for speaking of this topic Dr.Mike. I hope the people who are unaware of this get a new perspective on mental health. A view different from media's portrayal. Being a psychology student myself, people claiming that they're depressed due to simple family issues, litte argument with a friend, infuriates me. Because, the ppl I've seen have no actual issue, its a facade to get attention & sympathy. Also, arrogant people blame some disorder for their arrogance, when all they really need is understanding that, they just need to chill, a little. I hope more discussions and awareness regarding this topic surfaces. Thank you, once again Doctor.😊🙏

Yes! Yes to everything that it’s said in here. The last few years more people seem to be getting involved in the talk about Mental Health but sometimes we’re not all educated when it comes to it and I feel like that’s the most important thing, to know what we’re talking about! I have depression and when I come across someone who thinks they might have it to, my first thought it’s to go to a professional and talk to them first before anything else! Great video, thanks for talking about this

Thank you so much for making this video Dr. Mike. It was exactly what I was thinking when I watched Shane's videos. It takes so much knowledge and well-rounded analysis of one's situation to reach a diagnose. It can be extremely misleading when such a process is presented like marking off a checklist.

I'll be honest, for the longest time I thought I had depression, but then it turns out that I had two medical and physical conditions plus one side effects of both of the medical conditions (Migraines, Insomnia, plus something I'm not going to mention) that were giving me symptoms of depression. Don't label yourself. If you think you really have a problem, log in everything you notice, research, *and* go to the doctors.

This! Yes! Especially here on KZread a lot of vloggers self diagnose and give their (young) viewers the impression that experiencing negative emotions is not normal. This is so important.

Hello Doctor Mike. I'm a fan of yours, your Videos teach me so many Things! And as such, thank you for talking about this as well. I have ptsd, anxiety, depression, and ocd. All of them seerely influence my life and make it very difficult for me. A lot of people don't know how to handle my episodes or ticks because of these mental illnesses I have.It makes them hesitant and makes them feel awkward or uncomfortable even. That makes me feel bad and that's why seeing my favorite youtubers talk about mental health as maturely as you do, it makes me feel so much better and happy. Thank you for this, and have a good day/night. :)

Dude!! I’ve been waiting for this not only did you look at the medical side of mental health but you explained it PERFECTLY! It makes me so upset hearing people throw these words around saying things like, “oh I can’t go talk to that boy I’ve got anxiety.” When in reality it’s just simple nerves. THIS 👏 IS👏THE 👏EXPLANATION👏PEOPLE👏 NEED👏😂 again thank you for covering this topic it means a lot

As a mental health professional, it’s great to see you brought up the mental health topic and emphasized that people need to consult with professionals before they jump into conclusions and use mental illness as crutches. It’s good that media brings up awareness but also creates some people self-diagnosed and even self-medicated that they come to real mental health professionals and argue what they exactly have and refuse suggestions/treatment. You are totally right. Life can be difficult at times and we are not going to be happy and live in paradise forever. Having negative emotions is ok and we don’t need the pressure of needing to feel happy all the time.
