Mental and Physical Illness in Fantasy Books // with Kay's Hidden Shelf

Ойын-сауық

Kay had a wonderful video recently about her experience with fibromyalgia and how it related to reading (linked below), and I wanted to do a collab with her to dig in further. How is mental illness and physical illness portrayed in fantasy? How is it done well? When is it not done well?
We realize this is a tough topic, and we aren't here to talk about anyone else's personal experience with it, only our own.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for this open and vulnerable conversation ❤ As someone struggling behind the scenes, many of the things you discussed hit home real hard. I especially resonated with the topic of grief, not only grief over losing the healthy and carefree version of yourself, but also grief over losing your 'sick' identity when you step out of the victim role and start healing and then don't know who you are anymore outside of your diagnosis. Recovery and healing is a tumultuous but beautiful journey, and I love how books can help in that process. Thanks again, I love you two soooo much 🥰

Grief should be a normal part of these conversations, and I'm so glad it resonated with you, Esmay.

Congratulations on being the first person to talk about The Martian in a way that made me interested in maybe reading it. And, great discussion!

Thank you both for doing this. Having others be open about same/similar issues and situations greatly improves morale knowing we're not alone in this.

I’m so glad this conversation happened. As a person with a disability, trying to explore disability from such a close perspective is a lot more complex than I expected. There’s a lot of emotional baggage that is difficult to get onto the page. Having two people on this topic who one may not immediately clock as having a disability, this topic from that vantage point could offer some useful thoughts on how to get there, almost directly as a result of NOT being so embroiled in it, to the point of experiencing it every day (or at least in the same way that I do).

Thank you so much for watching, and you're right. Writing and exploring illness and disability is so complex. Invisible illnesses are definitely hard to live with for many reasons, and I'm glad we could offer some insight. :)
