Menopause Madness: What are My 2 Scariest Symptoms?

In this episode we meet Barbara. Her intense introduction to menopause came when she experienced a powerful hot flash while in a gondola going skiing. She didn’t understand what was happening so the episode triggered an intense panic attack that resulted in a claustrophobic sensation, one that stayed with her long after the gondola ride ended.
Barbara experienced other impacts over time, including heavy bleeding with clots that restricted her from leaving the house. The bleeding led to profound exhaustion until she took iron infusions that immediately restored her energy. Several years later, Barbara started to experience severe generalized anxiety, even though logically she knew there was no cause to worry. Given her work with Herstasis, she was now able to identify that this was probably a symptom of perimenopause. She was luckier than many women in that the nurse practitioner immediately prescribed her an oral menopause hormone therapy (MHT). This resolved the anxiety and left grateful that she had a young, educated healthcare provider who was up-to-date on the best treatments, as this isn’t the case for many women. Barbara’s wish is that women learn to accept that some changes, like slowing down, may be necessary, but that they continue to advocate for themselves. Because we all deserve to feel healthy.

Menopause Bleeding Issues
The amount of bleeding that is considered normal during perimenopause can vary from woman to woman. Some women may experience no bleeding at all, while others may experience light menopause spotting or heavy bleeding. If you experience vaginal bleeding after menopause (12 months without a period), or heavy bleeding after menopause that is bright red, see your healthcare practitioner immediately.

I was unable to function as every little thing was spinning me out of control. Additionally, I had no sense of time and space, as everything seemed urgent. However, since starting hormone replacement therapy (HRT), I feel like myself again. How about you? How do you feel on HRT?

I (47) have been on bio identical hrt for 6 weeks now. First 4 weeks were great, at week 5 anxiety hit back hard. Got an increase in hormones. Have a history with burnout and anxiety but think it partly had to do with hormones all along. Hope increase will have positive result. I am a bit impatient because I want that good feeling back. Must wait and give it some more time I guess. Comforting to know I am not alone...

We hear you and we are sorry. This is can be a terribly confusing time for women. We hear "What's happening to me?" all the time. Hold on as best you can. This will pass and make sure you speak to a trusted friend, a therapist, or a healthcare provider about what is happening. We also have some great free evidence-based resources on our website on mood-changes at www.herstasis.com/emotional-changes/.

Anxiety was my most debilitating symptom. No hot flashes. Anxiety and the inability to handle stress, fatigue. Once I started HRT the anxiety went away pretty much right away and that also helped with the fatigue.

The mental and psychological symptoms can often be more debilitating than physical symptoms. I'm glad to hear that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) had an immediate positive effect on you, making you feel much better. Thank you for your feedback! We truly appreciate it.💕

I had the same symptoms while driving on a highway at 70 mph. Had to get off immediately at the first exit because I just wanted to jump out of my car and run away. I've had perimenopause symptoms for at least 2 years. Am trying antidepressant first before HRT. My hair, my skin, my cycles have been different. Blood tests all say normal but I know something is different. You know you're not crazy but you start to feel crazy, but it's all real. Brain fog, heart palpitations, unexplained anxiety...it's So fun getting older.

At the time I was 42 years old with a one-year-old baby. I had no idea that my symptoms were related to perimenopause. It wasn't until I reached 56 and entered full menopause that the anxiety became a daily struggle and very debilitating. Due to the unavailability of patches at the time, I opted for HRT in pill format, which provided immediate relief. In addition to alleviating my anxiety, I have also noticed other benefits of HRT, such as it revered my vaginal atrophy.
