My son attended a Mennonite daycare. It was such a blessing! They always treated the children with love and respect. The children learned their colors, numbers, alphabet, how to tell time... Their lunch was always made fresh with whole food. They even involved the children when they made pumpkin pie from scratch for Thanksgiving. I think the best lesson taught was kind and spiritual dispute/conflict resolution between the children. I could go on for days about how wonderful the daycare was. It was absolutely a true blessing to my son and our family. ❤

You girls crack me up! I’m a 65 year old lady that was raised in Alabama in a Christian home but not Mennonite. I moved to Ohio when I was 28. A lot of your traditions are also mine. Yes Megan, we went for Sunday drives. On Sundays we dressed in our Sunday best and went to church. After church we ran in the house to change clothes. We had our big Sunday dinner and played the rest of the day or went for a drive. We did address our elders Mr. or Mrs. or Miss as respect to our elders. I was not raised on a farm but my mother was and a lot our dinners were similar to yours growing up. My mother sewed and taught me to sew but I hated sewing. Lol. Yep, she sewed my clothing and yes I got stuck with pins a few times. Southern Christian traditions are very similar to yours. Love thinking back on those memories. Thank you for the videos….love them!

Hi; watch you guys all the time(I’m a lot older, which has nothing to do w/anything), I live in Southern/central MA, & it’s as small town as you can get (love that).I was raised pretty much the same. I really like how your able to keep “FAMILY” as center of everything (also feel the same) but not everyone does. Some, not by choice, & others don’t get the opportunity. I like learning some differences & a lot the same. Thanks for sharing ! - SANDY -

This sounds so much exactly as our growing up years were as well. I was raised Catholic in the Midwest and Sunday clothes. Breakfast after church and a dinner later. Sunday rides and no stores were open but one drug store in case of medicine needs for the community. I learned to sew at 9 and still at 76 am a seasoned seamstress. Saves a lot of $ also. :-) School clothes, Sunday clothes and play clothes. School shoes and church shoes. And so it went. Would not have dared to call any adult by their first name. Never called mom or dad by their first name. Aunt and Uncles were called Aunt Mary or Uncle George etc........LOL The good old days! 🙂

What a relatable episode with my life currently, in Ontario and been attending a conservative Mennonite church and my children have been able to go to the connected school. A lot of things you talked about I am now familiar with, been holding back going much further into the culture by my husband who isn’t really into the Mennonite lifestyle. I really enjoy your posts and am continuing on my personal growth with god and the next steps I should take. Have a blessed week!

Hi ladies and thanks for another insightful and entertaining video. My life is not like yours but I’ve so appreciated following you for well over a year now. Megan, you’re not asking for my advice but I’m going to give it. I’ve heard you refer to your age or getting older with angst, or in a negative way. Not all the time, but every time you do it makes me tense up. Please gro to enjoy the stage-and age- you’re experiencing! I know you don’t want your daughter to think this way but I don’t want YOU to think this way! There’s so much to enjoy about getting older. I’m saying this at 54 and what are you, about 31? Oh my gosh, there is so much good coming to you, look forward to it! Embrace your age!!

I’m a free will Baptist. And we surprisingly have many similarities! Even down to wearing a head covering! Although I only wear it in Bible study or corporate worship. I love the Mennonite’s value on families and hard work and want to start that type of culture in my immediate family’s life so it can be passed down hopefully. 😊

One thing to mention is baking and cooking is a taught skill. I had a Mennonite friend who was one of 10 children and could bake and cook so well. Her family had Fasba on Sunday and tables were doubled up and filled with delucious food. I was a roomate who was far from home and was invited a couple of times. From the youngest baby to the oldest grandparent were included. It was a wonderful sacred and family time and will always remember . I am a believer in Christ and share very similar beliefs. Thank you, Megan and Jayna, so enjoy you both.

Being a Black Bumper (Horning) this is hilarious 😊😊😊Thank you also for mentioning about children’s education in a One Room schoolhouse. I was a helper in one for a few years in Lancaster County. Not only did the teacher have her GED and she was very well read and bright, but some of the students were so so bright. I personally became Anabaptist at 21. I went to college. I can tell you from experience the teacher was college material and so were some of the children. So people from the outside can not judge. Thanks for bringing up that point. Now that I am Mennonite for 37 years I defend them, haha

So fun to hear you talk! I’m not Mennonite anymore, but grew up in it. In Iowa we didn’t call it scouting, we called it bushwhacking! One night after church my boyfriend, now husband, was at my house. When we thought we finally had everyone out of the house. I went to the bathroom, only to find another guy hiding in there! Most times they didn’t actually come inside though. Fun memories and a culture that’s hard to describe. I’m thankful for all the good values I learned.

I gave up makeup same time I did pants. The Lord dealt with me about pants but not makeup. My cousin would talk to me like she just couldn't imagine going out in public with no makeup! I felt like an ugly monster how could I do this to people lol have to look at me with no makeup! So I decided next trip to town I would get some makeup and literally the minute my hand picked that item up the Lord dealt with my heart and said this is the problem....the fact that I felt like I had to have it! The Lord may deal with some about coffee, some about playing pool, and who knows what else! It's that moment where the Lord is asking for obedience and no matter how great or small the matter to obey is always the best ❤

Yes to: Sunday drives, family reunions, scrapple, hay rides, sewing circle (now that I'm retired, I'm part of one and love it), no make-up, circle letters (both of my parents' families had them for years--highly helpful for large families who were spread around the country), learning to sew as a young girl, double first and second cousins, Mennonite education (in my experience with college-educated teachers), focus on teachings of Jesus, and an absolute appreciation for the Mennonite culture and background. And Megan, I met Josh last week at September Farm. He's a sweetheart.

What an enjoyable video! As an "outsider" who has joined the Mennonites, you hit on some good points. I loved the "guy for everything." That is so true. I just ask one of the ladies from church if I need to find someone reliable and they always know someone! The saddest point is that of the Mennonite privilege mentality. That is so prevalent here in NW PA. They judge others for not following a rule or law to the T, but then turn around and stretch another rule or law to benefit themselves. My husband and I were shocked by that and still a bit baffled how they justify it. Anyway, Mennonites are still human and we love being part of them. The community and love and shared faith is what drew us in and why we stayed. You guys are not afraid or ashamed to stand up for what you believe. You do not waver in what you believe because society decides its no longer acceptable. I do think that you missed two important distinctions. The way that you identify each other by your husband's names. For example, the Jacob Weaver family is identified as the Jacobs. His wife as Jacob's Mary. That really confused us for a while! Your pronunciation of certain words is also unique. Fav-rite for favorite is one that comes to mind. Oh, I almost forgot "the name game." You know how when you meet another Mennonite they try to find out how you are related or who you are related to? I get a chuckle out of the confused look they get when they ask our last name and can't connect us with anybody. Thanks for stepping out and sharing this. We're all unique and quirky in our own ways. How boring it would be if we were all alike!

I can relate to many of the things you mentioned. I was raised in Indiana and I'm over 70. I still refer to people who were grown ups in my childhood as Mrs. Doe or Mr. Doe. I've heard of scrapple, but never had it. I think of it as a German thing and I have a German background. We took "rides" in the country on weekends or even evenings when the weather permitted. My mother sewed a lot for me, and I did some for my daughter when she was young. I do have cousins that share Great Grandparents who have married. It was not either's first marriage and they have no children together. I think that makes them 2nd cousins and spouses...... because Ancestry says I'm 2nd cousin to them and we are the same generation, I have the same Great Grands.Oh & here's a good one. My 1st cousin met my husbands 1st cousin at our wedding and got married a year later on the same date. so our kids are double cousins. I LOVE all your videos & chat!!

So fun. I was raised Christian, still am... born in the 1960's. We always had Sunday Day Of Rest, and would go for a Sunday afternoon drive, and stop and get an ice cream, so something like that. Our sewing circles were called "Sewing Bee's". As for sewing, I would start your daughter out, right on your main machine! My Dad, was one of 13, and his parents and siblings had a group letter, that they called the "Robin Letter" and we LOVED when we got it! Dad would take his old letter out, read it aloud to our family, see what had changed in that period of time, then read aloud all the new letters! So fun to hear all about the family!

I grew up Lutheran LCMS. Lots of similarities. And the occasional small town where every mail box has the same last name 😆...And everyone at church is some kind of cousin. We also had a small school. We didn't have any technology or updated books but it was by far better education than public school I attended later. It was embarrassing not knowing how to use a computer though. Love your chats

So many things are similar to how we live. We also have the hard copy church directory and my husband always calls it the "Dutch Book" as everyone comes from a Dutch heritage originally from the Netherlands. In my family (5 children) I was the first to get married. All of my siblings married to cousins of my husband so if there is/was a family event on my husband's side all of my siblings would be there. My sister and two of my brothers got married to a brother and his two sisters. On my husband's side he has three brothers married to three sisters. Love following you!

I just admire how the Mennonites live, and how they love God . The closeness the families are. My family doesn't get along. There's just to many unkindness shown. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your video. Happy Father's Day to your husband.

From my angle, I'm loving the Menonite community • I don't know everything about it, but love everything I see through yt • Christ first and then very practical life applications 💕 also, I agree with the topic on education • accredited or elite doesn't always offer the best sound education 💕

As someone who moved from the north to the south, I didn't grow up using Mr. and Mrs. for anyone but teachers. However, after moving to North Carolina I hear it often. So it must be more common in the south.

I'm black, South African and Baptist and with the exemption of buddy gangs, we do everything else you mentioned - both as a church and in my culture. Recently we had a boy who really wanted to learn how to sew and asked if he could join the ladies sewing group at church 😁 it was a unanimous no. The reunions are also important in my culture, my grandfather says "the dowry has to leave the family", meaning if you don't know your cousins, you could end up engaged to one of them.

So my brother in law is also my uncle, and their kids are my cousins, AND they are also my kids' cousins. Also, their kids are my nieces and nephews too now. 😂

Love hearing you talk about your view of a mennonite, definitely a bit different then what I learn growing up. I grew up in somewhat of a cult, we always called ourselves mennonites and even Christians, but not open to the gospel, we went to church on Sundays n that it's, never ever mention Jesus! The first time I heard an English talking person say they're mennonite, I was blown away.. were I grew up marrying second couisen was done often but first couisen was not allowed. I thought me and my husband were not related, later found out we were 3rd cousins, but that hasn't ever bothered me.

Love love love Aldi! And I didn't know it is German. This makes me happy because the Aldi cereal is what I buy so that it doesn't make me have a bad allergy feeling in my throat. And my kids can enjoy their cereal with no food dye. My son cant handle food dyes- it makes him puke and get so wild. lol

Sundays in Austin are so different. In my apartment complex all the cars are parked and I seem to be the only one up and dressed in conservative clothes and going somewhere. Yet churches seem to to be very full. So it is truly a big city but maybe most church goers live in homes. That would be fascinating to study.

Bernina has a guard that goes on it that’s to prevent your fingers going in the needle. I used one for my granddaughter. Also, I agree with Janna that you should let Evonne use your machine so she doesn’t get frustrated. I put the foot pedal on a stool so my granddaughter could reach. My husband loves Scraple! He went to a Quaker Boarding School outside of Philadelphia. I loved hearing about your background.
