Wow! Rewatched to focus on Ryan. Mendelssohn TOOK OFF when Ryan gave him "encouragement" in the last 100 or so yards. Had lots left in the tank. Lot of heart.

Clearly the best stayer of his generation and still improving - wins the KD by 5. Printing money.

Found a hole and went for it! Can't wait to see him in the Kentucky Derby. He's my top pick right now.

Mendelssohn has one helluva pedigree and seems he got all the good stuff from it. He went on to win the UAE Derby in Dubai in record time on dirt. Handsome horse.

You could be right. I'm concerned that he may have burned himself out in this race sort of like Arrogate after last year's Dubai World Cup. I don't understand why horses that are moved from turf to dirt aren't worked behind other horses to get use to the dirt in their face or mud like on a sloppy track.

kwgrid are we talking out European or American horses? I know in the states it's not uncommon for some farms to train horses together in the morning so they can get used to getting bumped by other horses and the dirt flying up into their faces and all that.

Then I don't understand why I hear about great horses that don't like dirt in their face or mud and lose races because of it. Zenyatta lost the 2010 Breeder's Cup Classic because she didn't like the dirt in her face so Mike Smith kept her further back than usual. Riva Ridge lost the Preakness and thus the Triple Crown because he didn't like the mud in his face. Not a big issue so we don't need to 'beat this horse'. :)

kwgrid Zenyatta didn't exactly lose the race cause of the kickback cause she did adjust to the kickback later on in the race to almost win it I think alot of it was more she was so far behind early that it took her awhile to catch up plus it didn't help breaking from the gate slowly caused she got squeezed. Riva Ridge ran on a sloppy Pimlico track during his lost in the Preakness not a muddy track and that was his first race in wet conditions.

I get why Coolmore was so keen to keep trying Mendelssohn on conventional dirt in the states after his impressive win at Meydan in the UAE Derby. But after a few losses on the dirt, I'm not sure why Aidan O'Brien didn't look at his performance on turf in this race and decide to maybe give him a shot at trying to win on turf in America either at a mile or 10F.

Classy colt, would have to run a brilliant race to win in Kentucky, not impossible, but unlikely

He will run a brilliant race in the KD , it's not only a possibility he'll win, it's a certainty on what I've seen in the UAE.

The way he ran last week in the Travers, while not fully recovered from a lung infection going through O'Brien's yard, tells me he's no forlorn hope in this year's Breeder's Cup Dirt Classic. Or perhaps you think he shouldn't be allowed to run in that as well.
