Dumb format. 2 sets of 2 minutes may _seem_ like the same time as 1 set of 4, but it's not. You have your "dead time" at the end of each set, which is the time beyond which you can't send the boulder if you're not already on the wall. This format effectively doubles the dead time, which gives them less time to make genuine attempts. Also, why were the "top attempts" on the screen counting _all_ attempts? It should just count the ones that were sent. Otherwise you have less incentive to attempt a climb, if you don't think you're going to get it on that attempt.

I'm surprised bin Salman is into climbing. I would have thought he'd be into the sports with a chainsaw...

IFSC supporting Saudi Arabia's oppressing regime? It would have been nice to see IFSC had some borders and showed a stance here, for climbing and the community.

Same as the others : thanks for the vid, but what shame for our sport to take place in such a locked up country. Women, liberty of speech, ecology, that's all the human's rights that you're neglecting by setting a comp there. I thought that climbing was about freedom. Also, wrong format.

I'm definitely not a fan of this format. Didn't feel like the athletes had the time to really get into a boulder. On and almost immediately gone again

Loved it!! This has been my first experience of seeing sport climbing in person. It’s been a superb 3 days and the athletes, coaches and friends, such a great friendly community. Makes me want to get involved with a climbing gym when I get back home. 😊 I’m looking forward to finding out when I can watch another one of these competitions, somewhere near where I live.

Brilliant to have a current competitor commentating with Mat, Petra really knows her stuff👍 would be interesting to know what shoes each competitor is using as there were lesser known makes and models being used. The format of this comp was complete and utter CRAP!!!!!! And someone fire the DJ - its a climbing comp, not a rave

So the IFSC will clutch their pearls when Elnaz Rekabi is persecuted, having her familys home demolished etc. for not wearing a hijab in comp; but as soon as the Saudi sportswashers come knocking its all good. Rest assured I wont continue to support IFSC in any way if they opt to return to KSA et al.

That was the worst concept ever. I hope no competition ever changes the 4 minutes like this. Seeing so many climbers timed out is just not interesting at all.

I'm not completely sure on this, but it seems to be testing a new format. There isn't any isolation & the climbers are just on the side & can see everyone else climbing the boulder (& see all boulder problems). Then I think the 'only 2 minutes to climb' is how they try to even it out & not make it a total cakewalk for all the athletes. Interesting, although having now seen it in these Semis & Finals -- I can officially say I'm not a fan. At least it's on this sort of comp & not a Olympic Qualifier or more important event (like the clear no-texture holds Bern had with 2023 World Championships. Where M4 Finals had a paddle dyno with only those holds).

Its a new flash attempt method that ifsc are trying for the event. I don't think they'll do it for official world cups. Each athlete has 2minutes per route twice (total 4 mins split into 2 sessions). If the athlete tops within the first 2 mins then they move onto the next route, otherwise they get another 2 minutes to try the route again after the other athletes give it a go.

I don't understand why Manuel Cornu is on place 5 behind Mathieu Ternant when he has 18 attemps. One less than 19. Does anyone know?

I think the scoreboard showed total attempts, not attempts to top, even though it was indicated as attempts to top

Didn't hate this experimental (at least for this stature of comp) format. A rest makes so much sense. I'm just not in love with the early elimination of some athletes. That one French climber who touched the final hold of Men's 3, to not being allowed to climb the next round, made no sense.

It's amazing to see Manu wearing our beige Nival Gravity pants, even though we're a young startup developing technical clothing for climbing! 🤯 Thank you Manu ! 💯

Well said. Sport as a whole keeps legittimating a murdering regime, it's disgusting. I expected that from FIFA with their world cup, since they are not much better than the Saudis, but the IFCS can and should do better.

I think with this new time format they should get two times 2.15min, because with 4minutes they only lose a try once at the end of the time. But with two times two minutes they lose twice a try at the end of the 2 minutes

Why did they change the format to 2 minutes and go out a second time? I feel like this they do not have enough time to try. Was it 5 minutes before?

I'm excited for what's next!

Thanks for the upload but with this type of route-setting (esp the longer boulder) and only having 2-minute attempts, it’s no wonder these athletes are risking injury. The format is disjointed and less enjoyable to watch - even if the camera person was more adept at catching the full movement/attempt instead of focusing on a foot. Experiment is done - let’s stick with the 4-minute format please

The new format drops the climbers down to 3 on the last problem. The new format is a test and was just that a test. This format will not be used for the world cup points.

Interesting format. And - of course - as always awesome commentary! BUT: awful camera! Can maybe someone make these guys aware that it is not helpful to randomly show only the feet or hands while the climber is on the boulder? I suppose they don't know anything about climbing/bouldering and what the audience actually wants to see. It is a bit like watching a soccer game, but the camera always focuses on some random player.

Could someone explain this format? Commentators said they have another 2 minutes after first 2 minutes,but no one took another 2 minutes for M1,2,3. Just 2 took another try for the last boulder. What does it mean? If they take another chance for M1,does it mean they have to give up the chance to try M2?

They have two tries on each boulder. Each try is 2 minutes. You try once, then go backstage and come back again after the rest of the climbers took turns.
