@@martinwhite418 That is your opinion. I do not agree with it. My opinion is that if it is a case where it is very obvious who committed the crime, and it was a crime where the perpetrator intentionally killed the victim in a brutal, violent, sadistic way, then I feel that the death penalty is appropriate. The victim does not get to go on living, and she was only 20 years old. The criminals shouldn't get to go on living either. I am sure they won't get the death penalty though, not in this case, but they should. They'll get some extremely weak sentence and then they'll be back out by the time they're 35, free to go out and commit more crimes, and leech off society. Edit: I don't think the death penalty should be used unless it is a case where there is so much evidence that there is no question as to who committed the crime. Those guys in this video are definitely guilty. There are cases where there is more of a question about the guilt of a suspect. In a case like that I would not want them to get the death penalty either.

@Nikki C So we punish people who are "really" guilty with the death penalty, and we send people who are "probably sorta guilty" to prison for life. Sounds fair, that's not what U.S. law says, but we will just go with your version.

If you actually believe in the nonsense then your god did, in fact, let this happen. Oh.... I hear ya "the good lord works in mysterious ways" but prayer is less than useless. Make a casserole for them or something... at least that's real and takes some minimal amount of effort. True story: one of my sons died when he was a few days shy of his 19th birthday... some god freak said this to me "Well, he's now in a much better place... there's some comfort in that." I'll admit that it wasn't my finest hour but I punched him several times in the face and body... hurt my hands quite a lot. Was arrested, detained but released about 10 - 12 hours later. No charges were followed through on.... bit of luck, that. Thank god, right? 🤣🤣🤣 Be careful what you say to people who are grieving... particularly the grief experienced by the loss of a child. My daughter was hit in the head at a school bus stop by a palm sized rock. A crazed girl decided to throw a handful of rocks in the air every time a car approached... on the first day of school, no less. One badly aimed rock came straight down on my daughter's head and caused a nasty injury. A similar incident occurred a few weeks later, when a different group of kids were throwing rocks at cars while standing on a street corner. It's funny how quickly that behavior stops when you press charges. Real quick. Cops said the kids were practically crying when they showed up. But this is what you have to do. Word gets around quickly, and kids change their behavior. But society is too concerned with feeling sorry for the perpetrators as the first reaction.
This reminds me of the time when I was driving home from high school and someone threw an unopened can of Coke out of their car at my windshield. Our cars were going around 45 mph in opposite directions. The can went completely through my windshield. Fortunately it went through the center of the windshield and landed on the backseat of the minivan, where no one was sitting. What a mess. I, or my passenger, would have been seriously injured if that pop can had actually hit one of us. So dangerous. Also, the can was still full when it hit the seat, so it's not like it weighed significantly less after it went through the windshield. My mom was so pissed. First at us, thinking that we did it, and then at the asshole who did it when she realized it wasn't our fault.

Excellent as always. Dr Grande is the only commentator I’ve seen who has given any attention to the nature of the stone. The term “teenagers throwing rocks at cars” can give someone with just a passing glance a wholly incorrect mental image. The “rock in question”..from the one photograph with a scale that I saw..had about cubic size of a large brick but being granite considerably more weight…5 or 6 pounds. See how far YOU could throw that. So no, their vehicles passed close together, however briefly, at night, and this great beach cobble was launched specifically at the windscreen of a car going perhaps 70 miles an hour. Viewed in that way the death of the driver was clearly a realistic possibility… either being struck by the stone in the head or upper body…almost instant death…or causing the driver who was NOT struck to nevertheless lose control of the vehicle at high speed and crash, again with a realistic risk of death and almost certain risk of serious injury, including blindness from flying glass causing them to,lose control and drive into oncoming vehicles, possibly killing others. I agree with Dr GRANDE…a long prison term is called for and if the prosecutor is going to have trouble getting a “.murder” conviction then charging them with each crime separately and ordering consecutive terms in prison is the way to go. How is this different from shooting at cars with a long gun “just to scare em” and hitting the driver in the head?
This is sick. What is happening to our youth today? Rock throwing when using a six pound rock sounds like murder to me. They would not want me on their jury.
Excellent points made, Dr. Grande. Just because a motor vehicle was involved should not mean that they did not commit murder. I also agree with your point about people who wittingly drive under the influence and cause death and/or injury of another. I hope justice is served in this case and the sentencing of these men is appropriate to the crime they committed.

Given the other incidents where they were throwing rocks at windshields AT the drivers, it's unlikely her being on the phone hands-free or not had much to to with it, and I am not a person in favour of messing with distracting things while driving.

The difference/analogy of a drunk person in a car and a drunk person with a bat is of course its intention. These men absolutely knew there was a VERY high probability of serious injury or death. Also, I did not know that you could use the “find my phone” feature to find someone else’s phone. But thank goodness Alexa’s friend did. Otherwise they wouldn’t have found her as quickly as they did. I wonder if these kids through another rock through the rear window once they returned to take pictures?
Good evening, Dr. Grande! Unfortunately, incidents such as these are common and usually remain open and unsolved cases. Usually, they occur when people thrown rocks off of bridges over streets, expressways and thruways, and the scumbags (if caught, which is rare) claim that they didn't mean to hurt anyone. Frequently, the scumbags are children or teenagers, and, if caught, rarely do much, if any, time. At least in Rochester, New York. Fortunately, scumbags usually have cell-phones with which they share their experiences with others, which can be used for their apprehension. Yes, they wanted to cause destruction. And, if it leads to fatalities, should earn them good, several decades-long stretches in a hell-hole of a prison. Now, THAT'S entertainment! Thanks for sharing.

They are a special kind of stupid, aren't they? Poor Alexa and her family and the others affected by these actions. These three require consequences. I hope they meet some serious ones. This is not a prank. People know that people "can" die, but went ahead anyhoo - and as you say, they chose large rocks. They knew something was wrong and just enjoyed that they had harmed someone. I’m sorry, but there have been NUMEROUS fatal incidents Involving someone throwing a rock or some other object into traffic and striking a person in a vehicle, causing the death of the person. The news coverage of these cases was broadcast nationally and repeatedly. The risk of killing a person by throwing objects into traffic is very well known, especially in the internet age. These boys knew what they were doing and what they had been responsible for after they watched that girl’s car drift off the road, and decided to take a photo of her mangled car and possibly her body to keep as a “memento.” IMO, that absolutely shows a grave indifference to human life and the consequences of their actions were not as devastating to them as it should have been. The fact that they all turned on each other is just another example of the lack of empathy and compassion for the people affected by the moronic decisions they made. All of them were old enough to know better, and should have to pay the price accordingly.

These types of undirected faceless crimes stir me up. It´s connected to a feeling of helplessness and "it can happen at anytime" state. Being hit by whatever in the passing is a method to avoid responsibilty and shows extreme cowardiness and lack of impulse control when you think the target is an easy victim. I guess this type of crime comes from people with deep devaluation of like you said human in general, an extreme behaviour that forms in people who probably feeel themselves as the victim and failure in society.

People are horrified and def screaming for blood in this Case. He wouldn't answer his phone so After midnight I got worried tried to drive around to see if I could find him.. after an hour and a half it occurred to me to ping his phone with the find my phone "app" from his ipad... and it worked. the closest thing to the pings map that came up was the police station (for a moment I was afraid it meant he was dead in a ditch in a field NEAR the jailhouse,) so I called and they confirmed he was there. Got a DUI and wasn't allowed to leave unless someone sober picked him up but He was too embarrassed to call. I can only imagine alexas friend's terror of finding her.

I live in an area where bridges/overpasses/underpasses were under construction for years and given the increase in traffic (since the original format was introduced) there were 1000s of residents thrilled with shorter times to work and home. It was great. Then....some smartarses decided the chucking rocks on to traffic and busses below was a great idea. Not sure they felt quite the same thrill following 2 deaths and a bus driver so traumatised, he retired. I can no longer recall what the term was, but i do know they were older teens, and pretty sure they weren't going to somewhere they could terrorise others. Im pretty sure they were separated too. Best idea! Love your work Dr G. Sometimes you really help, not simply educate. ❤xx

I actually heard a program on NPR this past winter about the Stanford Experiment. While I'm inclined to agree with you that mobs empower people to do bad things, the two men who conducted the "Stanford Experiment" were early pioneers of no jail/prisons, and defund the police back in the late 60's and early 70's. Two French researchers went through the exhausting recordings and notes, and found that the violent behavior of the "guards" was promoted and coerced in order to have violent, negative incidents which could then be in turn used as "proof" that incarceration and laws created more problems than they solved. The findings of the two French people can be found with a quick Google search.

@@peteywheatstraws4909 I've worked in a prison and always thought that experiment was contrived. I was glad when it was discredited. Although I'm sure there are sadists in every vocation, in reality, prison guards are hugely outnumbered (1 officer per housing unit of 99 inmates, usually) and can only do their job with the inmates' cooperation, which tends to encourage mutually respectful behavior from custodial staff and inmates.
