This week we got a new type of RAM called LPCAMM2 from Micron and Samsung in a Lenovo laptop to replace SO-DIMM, the US passed a weird new Huawei ban on Intel and Qualcomm chips and OpenAI and Microsoft are kinda decoupling from each other.

Just check the Apple U1 chip (Ultra-Wide Band Chip, devices between iPhone 11 and Vision Pro had that chip), but after Vision Pro they announced the Apple U2 with better distance and angle tracking, just like the market comercial on iPhone event when they found each other with the phone.. and for that to work both device need the U2 chip, which means older devices with U1 can't do that.. so how you want to make it backward compatible, if the older U1 was made mainly because of Air Drop, and there the exact position of the 2 decice is meaningless.. but for the pencil you should know it exactly where is the pen, or the menu will showed 10cm away from your pen.. so this is why you can't use it on any device with just U1 chip, it's not enough accurate..

Truth is the majority don't care for such cool things in tech, only us nerds. Because it just makes googling unnecessary in many cases. But if they don’t do it, they might miss out on the next big thing and become obsolete like yahoo or MySpace. It must make more sense to lose money in a long term and figure out how to monetize later than just missing out from the beginning.

I don’t think it’ll be necessary. We’re hitting the limits of SO-DIMM performance right now, so if a manufacturer wants to push higher speeds than 5600mtps (a significant factor for iGPU performance), the’ll either solder, or have use LPCAMM2. It’ll just take a bit before production reaches significant capacities to take advantage of economies of scale and prices on the new RAM can fall at or near the price of SO-DIMMs.

I would disagree that socketed power loss is why builders have gone soldered. I won't disagree it may be a very minor consideration for max efficiency models, but I believe that cost, space, and assembly time is much more the reason for soldering RAM; cost being the most important. In some cases, performance since memory can be directly wired with short traces for higher speeds and less error. So power is relatively insignificant loss of battery life. Even if 64% more efficient, 64% of what % of actual power usage of socketed RAM? 64% of .08%? I don't have that answer either :)

I would say the biggest reason why most laptops dont use soimms is just memory speed. DDR5 sodimms only really go to 5600 mt/s while lpddr5x goes to 7500 and beyond. In addition its less space and easier to make traces for the manufacturer. If you look at sodimm traces they dont go in stright lines but go up and down because all the traces need to be the exact same length for the ra to work. LPCAMM2 solves most of these problems. It takes a lot less space. It is smaller in height and width while also supporting the faster more energy efficinet lpddr5/lpddr5x. Its also easier to lay traces to it than it is to sodimms.

This is wholly inaccurate: LPDDR has major battery life benefits and *it's not even close* . DDR (specifically DRAM refresh cycles) can account for ~30% for standby power losses in a mobile device. LPDDR lowers that to ~3% of standby power drain. This is well-known and public information... Search Google for a Micron presentation: DWF13_AMF_ENT_T1070.pdf (pg 12).

I prefer perplexity as well these days. Now it is Perplexity and Bing on laptop and Google and perplexity on phone. If Microsoft gets it's stuff together on the phone app, just make a Google app clone and make it leaner, I'll use it more frequently. The Huamei bans make more sense when you remember that Intel can whine to the government about too many lost sales - so of course server stuff is not yet getting axed, and of course other bans went in after US companies could not profit from the Chinese one any longer. Also, there is a cost to Chine overall even if a company here or there has started to roll their own. Also, some of that might have been some part of previous talks with China.

Qualcomm can have some M3 killer when an M4 comes out because the main reason to even care about their whatever is how well it might be running Windows, so people can buy products decoupled from Intel/AMD - not "rolfs Apple faster" fanboyistic nonsense. (not call you a fanboy, but the comparison itself is). This whole episode feels a bit lesser vs your usual commentary.

Lots of little things to fill out their portfolio (like the watch, siri, tv, ...) and some technically interesting things like moving to ARM, but nothing interesting. I mean, they were never known for inventing categories, but they would take something that was promising but wasn't making much progress and make it a good experience for most people. I haven't seen that in a long time now, and I wonder how long that momentum will last.
