Memory Games - Insights into Dyslexia

Discover fabulous resources about how to create media in education and examples from across Welsh Universities at www.cadarn.ac.uk.
Learners with dyslexia often have a deficit of working memory that can hinder the processing and manipulation of information. This can be related to a lack of strategies for holding information within the working memory. In this video I demonstrate some memory-boosting activities that aim to develop more of these strategies.
This is one video in a series designed to introduce techniques for the module "Insights into Dyslexia Research Practice".

I just love the way the teacher asks about the strategy the student used each time and takes it as a tool

I love the video! Where did you get your bulletin board materials, particularly the months of the year? I spent 2 hours looking online, and couldn’t find them.

Hi Erin We made these videos for Glyndwr University to be used as part of a distance-learning teacher training course. I'm glad they were interesting and useful to you. Sadly we have finished making videos for the time being. The video series featured Ioan, who was also diagnosed with dyslexia like you. He is one of the smartest kids we've ever met! He is very kind, extremely creative, and is really passionate about animals. I am sure that you're just as bright and you won't let anything get in your way. Don't be disheartened to have dyslexia. We think that people with dyslexia have incredibly creative minds and we wish you all the best for your future studies. Keep learning and developing your talents. You'll do great! All the best The CADARN team.

Can you do a video on how to help with spelling? I have a student who says she can't remember how to spell words. I think this is a great idea to help them improve their memory.

I just watched a KZread by Chris Blanc 'Effective Spelling for Dyslexics 2015'. It is good method and tool. She starts each mnemonic with the word it spells ie. "Because elephants can add up sums easily." or "White houses in the east." She has published a book of over 240 mnemonic chants with the harder common English words.

The video made it clear that memory retention is a problem in people with dyslexia. Can you please tell me if there is proof or research that the specific activities in the video will improve memory retention?

my understanding is that working memory improves with age but memory exercises don't work.

@@lizzielh I have dyslexia and have found working memory can improve with using certain techniques such as visualising things you are trying to remember.
