Memories in Rust - Exploring the Cloud Museum in Bard, California

The Cloud Museum in Bard, California is a unique experience to say the least. This place has tons of stuff from the early part of the 1900s, from appliances, to garden equipment, bottles, to hundreds of cars. They may even have the largest collection of Ford Model Ts in the world. There is a lot to take in here.
While the museum is only about 10 miles or so north of Winterhaven, California, and about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Yuma, Arizona, it is in a part of California that gets very few visitors making the museum a real hidden gem. Or maybe more appropriately a diamond in the rough?
In this video we explore the museum, its collection of cars, a 1921 motorhome, and take a look at some of the stuff that would have been a common (or maybe even uncommon) sight a century ago.
This place is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Just be prepared to spend more time than you think there, as the amount of stuff here is almost overwhelming.
The Cloud Museum is located at 1398 York Rd, Bard, CA 92283.

The "$850 car" that you looked at towards the end was actually a 1926 Dodge Brothers. In 1926, a Model T would cost around $300-$400 depending upon the body style.

would explain why in modern money that 850 dollar car was a nearly 15,000 dollar car. Although even Henry Fords Model T in 1926 (in 2024's dollars) would of been a bit over 5k

A very good illustration of how far we've come in the last one hundred years! One item I definitely noticed at time index 10:25 was the old ball shaped kerosene lanterns they used to use to warn drivers at night of areas of highway construction. They were still using them in the 1950's when I was a child and when they redid the streets around our home they were something for a kid to see at night!

Two notes about the end of your video. The rusty old round containers (10:25) are called Smudge Pots. They were us ed all around the Yuma area, mostly in the critus groves, to keep plants from frost damage in December and January. I was born in the old Yuma County Hospital in 1953, and during my time smudge pots were a common sight. In later years they were replaced by two-blade aircraft propellers mounted on tall steel poles in the 'Groves' of mostly lemons and oranges. The props were driven by 8-cylinder gasoline engines, and in some cases 3-cylinder Detroit Diesels. Then at 10:44 there is an old 4-door with running boards and no top, lettered as "Red's Scout Car". As a kid we would see this car every year in the annual Yuma Jaycees Silver Spur Rodeo parade, often with the owne driving it. Red Rambo was a local celebrity and business owner. He owned Red's Roost bar in WInterhaven, California, Red's Place and the Birdcage bars in downtown Yuma. Just some trivia for ya from an old Yuma Desert Rat.

The clearance and angles of these early Fords was ideal for "overlanding" dirt roads. A 4x4 built on a Model T chassis with a modern crate engine, suspension upgrades, and decent brakes and wheels would seemingly rival or surpass the capability of a modern Jeep.

Interestingly, a young man named Jesse Livingood designed, manufactured, and marketed a 4X4 conversion kit for the Model T in 1914. His son started manufacturing the kit in limited numbers again in the 1980's. It's actually a very sought after accessory for Model T collectors.

Spent tons of time around this place in the '00s, when work was taking me to Yuma almost daily. One of my"T"s had a bunch of parts come from Cloud's "overflow storage" a couple miles up the road. Model "T"s are an absolute BLAST to run around in, and late models so freakin boring to drive, I can't even imagine why cars evolved much beyond them. To this day, (I'm 58) I've NEVER owned a car newer than '64, or that I didn't build myself. My current daily driver around Phoenix is a '29 Ford Model "A" pickup, slightly modernized to keep up with the trafic today.

There was a gas station near Mille Lacs lake in Minnesota, In 1965 my Grandfather and I stopped for gas. the pump was an old tower flask type. If you wanted 5 gallons, The attendant would hand pump 5 gallons up into the holding flask, then with the filler hose in the tank open the valve and the gas would gravity drain from the flask into your tank.

I have an old picture of my granddad and grandmother with my mother's older sister standing next to my granddad's model T coup. His dad (my great granddad) sold the car to my granddad. It was supposedly the first Ford model T in Itawamba County Mississippi.

Thanks for the great video! I didn't know of that museum and now I'm just going to have to visit it. My brother lives out by the Salton Sea and this place isn't too far from there.

Back in the day they used "Honey Pots".... That was a porcaline pot with a lid and when used, someone had to take it to the community bathroom to dump it or a hole that they dug. I think I saw one or two REO Speed Wagons in there.

Wow, a lot of vehicles....Reminds of a place in Yuma, AZ, late 1980's. The Family had an RV park/Antique store/pet store & some shops to rent out. I sold collectibles there for one "season" in Yuma (Fall/winter). The elderly gentleman collected everything, and in the "back" he had old wooden buildings filled with all kinds of old stuff. His intention was to put together a little town, complete with a train....I don't think the project ever really got started....at least this collection is open and available to see. Interesting, as usual.

Yuma is an interesting town, no other place like it. I spent a lot of time in Yuma over some five decades. Just came across a vintage Hotel Key fob from the Stardust (Yuma) in one of my boxes Met a lot of good local's there. I'm an Big City (LA) guy, who found Yuma fascinating.
