Much of this development is overrated by Propaganda driven media hype.... 1. 5 th largest economy, will become 3rd largest soon, blah blah blah.... Look at per capita income hardly any growth. Even Bangladesh per capita gdp is better than India now. 2. Earlier government used to conduct National sample Survey ( NSS) every 5 years, one of many outcome was, used to measure poverty in India, now no survey in last 6 years... Joke --- Last 2017-18 NSS survey results were abandoned by government by saying there is too much discrepancies in the survey. The survey results showed for first time since 1991 poverty was increased in India... no media coverage nothing. 2017 gdp growth was 4.5%. 3 . government stopped publishing unemployment data... Jobless growth... No official government unemployment data since 2015. Development is more of hype than reality...

My niece is born and raised in USA. Certainly she did not go to a Gujarati medium school. But she can read and write Gujarati. Her parents - my brother and bhabhi were born and raised in India and went to English medium schools also. Gujarati was not the medium of instruction in schools. It was taught at home by the parents. It is not just language but classical music, classical dance are flourishing not just in India but among Indians in US. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi movie industries are flourishing. Regional language newspapers flourish in India. Gujarati theatre is thriving.

Regional languages are taught in English-medium schools as well, so it's not true that your brother didn't learn Gujarati at his school. As an Maharashtra, I attended an English-medium school as well, but we were required to learn at least four languages-Marathi, English, Hindi, and we were given option to choose from sanskrit/german/french , and people in Pune, like myself, are also multilingual and can speak many other languages too like My family has large influence from konkan so i can speak kokani too and my mausis husband is Bengali, so I can speak a little bit of Bengali, too.

I had recently been to gujju momim Muslims household in Canada.. we were a couple of Brahmin families being invited for lunch.. I casually mentioned that we had spoilt a weekend for them by having a vegetarian only lunch.. they retorted saying that they have a non vegetarian meal only twice every month because they are majorly vegetarians.. was surprised that they sing both Ramayana and Mahabharat in their offerings.. was pretty eye opening view point

Gujarati Muslims are nice in general especially compared to UP, Delhi, Mumbai etc. Muslims. I am from Ahmedabad, living in the USA currently. When my mom was a child, their neighbours family were Muslims. My mom used to tie Rakhi to that neighbour since they were kids. That tradition is still going on and I call that uncle MAMA. Him and his entire family is invited to all our festivals, celebrations and events etc. and vice versa. Whenever I go to India, I go see them too.

As an Indian punjabi we love our culture . Every Indian have two identities one is state identity ( punjabi or Gujrati ) and other identity is out common identity(indian ) we call ourselves punjabi Indian . If someone told us to choose one from both identities we will refuse it . Because we are proud Indian and proud punjabi so choosing between two two identities is equal to choosing one parent between mother and father . I can speak multiple languages but Punjab is still my mother tongue and we are proudly speak punjabi but in Pakistan Punjabi thinks Urdu is superior than punjabi and punjabi speaking people are pendu .

Well interesting is that before partition in Punjab there was a census (think 1941) people where asked to declare their first language. Muslims wrote Urdu, Hindus wrote Hindi only Sikhs wrote Punjabi. So only Sikhs really owned it although ALL three spoke it at home. So the politics of this right upto now can be seen in Pakistan but also in India

Gurmukhi is based on Brahmi-which forms the basis Tamil Sanskrit Pali Prakrit Saka- region in NWFP and proto sinaitic- Ancient egyptian and standardized post Guru Angad 2nd Sikh Guru in 1525-1530 while Shah-mukhi is based on Persian. Urdu is local to Lucknow yes it is influenced by Persia has Persian script but is developed from Apabramsha prakrit and Sanskrit roots then Hindustani ; Brijbasha while script is Persian- Arabic. Even pre-Islam Ancient Persian has immense similarity with Sanskrit. Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast.- Amir Khusrau on Kashmir; Ast is Old persian; Asti- to be/being in Sanskrit and Old persian. India and Iran have contributed immensely to the development of language in Central and South Asia

My daughter lives in uk with me and she can speak Sindhi and English but not Urdu. I preferred Sindhi over Urdu because I never wanted her to suffer from identity crisis. She is now very clear who she is, what’s her culture and where her roots are.

@@user-rh5jp2sh4s I would argue English is also an Indian language at this point. India has one of (if not the) highest number of people speaking English in the world. If you include English speakers from the entire subcontinent, certainly it's the highest. Indian English is studied by linguists at this point and has characteristics not found in other versions of English. The thing is...once some things enter from "outside" and are accepted into a culture they become the cultures own. Food gives us some very good examples of this. Where the Samosa or the Pav are now widely recognized as "Indian" dishes, they originally came from Persia and Portugal respectively. Does that mean they're not India? NO! Because they have now become a part of the culture and tradition. Likewise, English, with its many speakers on the subcontinent, and it's body of literature from anglophone speakers in both India and Pakistan, can and should certainly be considered an Indian language. One last thing---people can speak multiple languages you know? Just because I typed this in English...इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि मुझे हिन्दी नहीं आती. نہ ہی اسکا یہ مطلب ہے کہ میں اردو نہیں جانتا. So... You know...maybe we can all learn more languages and learn to appreciate each of them?

@graffitiabcd Nice comment 👍 appreciate it. Well, most of us speak multiple languages and have multiple identities. Issue is when one language dominates. Or one is considered superior/inferior to the other like Urdu/Punjabi. So, using any language is primarily just a means of communication, but one can not deny there is a certain power dynamic involved when English is used. This is true also in Pakistan but much much more in India. One can not deny that there is a mindset that an English speaking person is considered "parha likha" well, and the rest are "gawar" and that is an overhang of British Raj...

@@user-rh5jp2sh4s yes that's so true!! Unfortunately, the speaker of English is perceived as "superior" to the speaker of other languages in India. While you're absolutely correct in pointing out this is a colonial hangover, I think another aspect of this is the economic condition brought about by globalization much later, where English speakers get better jobs etc. (arguably globalization is a tacit continuation of colonialism, perhaps even a kind of neocolonialism) Which all...kinda sucks. There's also the issue of "correct" and "wrong" English. While as a linguist, and as most linguists would, I absolutely deny the idea that there can be an "incorrect" way to speak a language as long as you get the point across, a lot of people in today's world are obsessed with grammar policing and taking pride in their correct usage of English. A lot of my pakistani friends also police "proper urdu" the same way. This is another way that people reinforce class and caste hierarchies, because what's considered "correct" or the "standard" is often the dialect of those who were already rich and "educated" etc. (also seen in the case of AAVE) Perhaps we should figure out how we can get rid of all kinds of social hierarchies, not just of languages but also of people! (because honestly this is where linguistic hierarchies come from). And that's going to need not just holistic education (sciences and humanities both) but also solidarity across gender, race, and national lines, as well as abolition of superficial divisions such as class and caste.

Our country has always been diverse and i love how despite being different we all celebrate each others food, culture and languages.

No, Maharashtra is really safe. Recently I visited Tamil Nadu and I felt like they were mocking me whenever I tried to speak in Hindi . One lady even went to an extent to say that you should learn Tamil and then come here. I personally feel south India is becoming next Bangladesh.

I would like to make one very interesting point here. When I first came to bombay ( mumbai) in early ninties, I had a friendship with a mumbai born shetty ( a tulu speaking community from karnataka). He was a business men and I saw him speaking fluent gujrati with few of his client's. On enquiring, he made one simple statement. If you want to do business in Mumbai, you have to know to speak gujarati.

Barabar chee. Another interesting observation I ( a punekar) have about Mumbai is, the majority Maharashtrians very often speak Gujarati, indeed are rather proud of their Gujarati speaking skills. The gujjus on the other hand, despite living in Mumbai for 100s of year's claim that they don't speak/ understand Marathi. But when you give them a few " greetings " in Marathi, they miraculously understand the language. Me Punekar. And in Pune, every ( local) Gujarati and Marwari knows Marathi. And we admire Veer Damodar Savarkar. Bal Gangadhar Tilak. And Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Well, I lived in a small town of Maharashtra but I knew Gujarati and all Gujarati shopkeepers traders knew Marathi. For me Gujarati is a second language as Gujarat is the neighbouring state and since it (Vadodara) had Marathi rulers who freed the land from Islamist regimes... There is a hoard of the Marathi-speaking population there. I am proud that I can speak Marathi, Gujarati, Hondi, English. Can understand almost all dialects of India, can understand Punjabi, Haryanvi. I am a proud Indian.

09:36 I have a Gujarati friend whose forefathers had emigrated to Uganda. Idi Amin threw them out and they landed in UK. Next generation landed up in Canada and my friend's generation are now in USA. So we are looking at several emigrations after leaving India, maybe a couple of hundred years and several generations. But their kids still speak Gujarati and follow their customs like Dandia. They even get a Gujarati newspaper and have a Gujarati association. My observation is that Gujarati culture is stronger than even Bengalis (whose kids cant speak Bengali anymore) or Tamilians etc.

@@user-el2uq8rk5q The people who assume Arab brutal desert culture with burkas and bans (on everything which makes an average human happy) as superior to the local vibrant colorful cultures after forcefully being converted to Islam suffers from this strange identity crisis. You can neither own your own local culture since your lovely Islam doesn't permit you to do that nor you can adopt Arab culture bcoz the Arabs doesn't entertain you to use their identity or to align with them. We Indians from the south love few Punjabi songs (and other language songs too) which sounds too good even though we don't understand the language and many of my friends from North are fans of some South songs and they ask me to recommend some good Telugu movies and songs.

Well, that is true upto an extent, especially that regional languages weren't given officially the role they deserved. But it is also true that in India, especially the younger urban middle class uses excessively English to communicate, at the COST of ALL!!! Indian languages. This can be seen in the lack of fluency and vocabulary, especiallyin the younger generations. That's simply not the case in Pakistan, ofcourse English also has its role, but no were to that extent. In that manner, Pakistanis are much more connected to their roots

It's just that I live in pune ( which is a kinda big city and lots of other states people live here that's why we use English for communication)We all North Indians, west Indians ( Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa).... Knows 3 languages ( Hindi, English and our mother tongue) . We don't learn it From our schools .... We talk to our parents in our mother tongue. And it's very imp as every state of India has their own culture,language....we can't lose our culture because of Hindi or English.

I have neighbour who moved from Multan to India at the time of partition but they still speak multani Punjabi which is bit different from normal Punjabi. It is upto the people how to remain connected to your roots irrespective of the place you are living in

I usually don't comment i am from south India and after listening to malnutritment in Pakistan i feel bad for innocent kids, i distinctly remember mid day meal program in india which is the largest in the world , was implemented to tackle this issue,the food menu is balanced and kids are regularly checked and supplements are given if needed. Government provided all the basic necessity upto certain age here..

These indices are prepared by dubious freelance organisations, not by UNO or any standard international organisations. These organisations have axes to grind. Showing India below African countries, Pakistan etc is one of the aims of these indices.

Bhai aap log IIT ka impact bohot over rate karte. Isro has no iit engineers, largest IT companies are not run by iitian. Most of the IIT are useless for India they just went abroad. Only its changing now. Most software exports are not by iit engineers. It's by small town lads who did that with few months of training.

South have economic growth but West India and North States like Haryana & UP has much more growth than South India. But if you see Natural Resources from Jharkhand, Odisha & Chattisgarh are necessary for industries in South. Nehru's freight equality policy is responsible for Less Industries in North & Central despite of being rich in natural resources.

Jugaad is shortcut bypassing safety and other considerations. It works only under favourable conditions and leads to failure and even accidents under unfavourable conditions.

Bohra/vohra muslims have very similiar culture as hindu gujjus be it in gujarat or anywhere else. I had a bohra muslim friend who was born and brought up in Mumbai spoke fluent gujarati and had the same financial mindset a typical gujju would have.

I am telling you as a , modi supporter not BJP supporter , if you ever tarvel Gujrat, you will see what india has become and after 2014 modi changed india , digital revolution, economic revolution , road and infrastructure revolution, everything changed under him . If you come here there is not a single place in India where roads and highways and metros are not building ... There is huge infrastructure development going on india . Search about Nitin gadkari , he is as popular and as respected as modi . He is bob the builder of india .

Bhai they have an ITS CARD system which is like Aadhar card which was started 15yrs before aadhar. And he said they blindly follow their some spiritual leader. Great guy

Bohris still speak Gujarati, they did not leave their culture, even after migration to Pak.

Bhai I am also a sindhi like you and where i live most of the people are pakistani sindhis hindus who have migrated and you are smart enough to know why. i am also a sindhi hindu whose grandfather migrated from khanpur sindh in 1970s. i can understand sindhi well and can also speak it but not fluently. sindhi culture and language is more thriving in India than pakistan

In India every states have their own mother language. In which the students read and write.

In India Sindhis (or any other community) go to English medium schools but learn mothertongue at thier homes. So almost all kids are good with conversing in their mothertongue even for Sindhis after leaving Sindh 75 years ago..

Regarding Gujarati in NRI, my kids speak Gujarati but understand hindi but cant speak… but we made sure kids learn English/Gujarati. All of my Gujarati friends we make an effort to keep our language & culture here. When we get together kids eat Gujarati food if we do & also we celebrate all festivals & speak Gujarati with each-other & all kids..

It’s mostly because India focused more on using the money to improve the military, infrastructure, welfare and education instead of Pakistan which their money on the military and terrorist groups, this lack of spending on education meant most people wouldn’t end up getting good jobs and wouldn’t make much money not helping the economy, India on the other hand, focused on the country and the people, that’s why Indians are making tons of money and India is the world’s fastest growing major economy whilst nearly 2/3 of Pakistan lives in poverty and the country is on the verge of dissolving. India spends 9% of it’s GDP on education, Pakistan spends 3% on education, India spends 360 billion on education whilst Pakistan spends less than a million, 855,000 USD to be exact, Pakistan doesn’t even spend 1% of India’s expenditure on education, India spends 13% of it’s GDP on infrastructure, 520 billion USD in terms of money, and in 2023, many major infra projects in major cities and developing cities are going to be completed this year such as the Delhi-Mumbai expressway which will pass through 7 states and be 1,350 km and has costed 125 million USD to build, India has spent more on infra than Pakistan’s GDP, talking about Pakistan, they spend 2.2% of their GDP on infra or 6.3 billion USD, that’s 1.2% of what India spends on infra. To answer you question simply, the reason India is way better than Pakistan is because we spent on things which would help developed, Pakistan spent it on what they thought would get them developed. True there are issues no doubt. But upto 2006 the per capita GDP of Pakistan was higher then India... and also now in Indian provinces like UP and Bihar (which have huuuge populations) it is lower. Again not saying that there are no challenges in PK, but so HAS and HAD India

1 Disagreement With Uzair on the Iranian Oil Smuggling Tax Issue Pakistan is not Allowed to Import Sanctioned Iranian Oil Legally ( But USA Looks Away ) Pakistan Army Gets Huge Discounts on this Oil , And the Faujis Use This Oil. If your Army weren't Smuggling this Oil then Petrol Price Would be Much Higher in Pakistan.

It would be nice to have a casual podcast of these guys and a few Indians together.

One solution for Pakistan, Fundamental change in Pakistan can happen only with economic and also "cultural" ties with India! Period.

I think one of the most pressing issue of the subcontinent that is just around the corner is climate change and how it is going to impact agricultural produce. In India we are trying to do a lot of things like changing few agri practices, use of novel fertilizers (FICCI developed it), switching to millets (very drought resistant) and many others that I might not know. If you can bring in some agricultural expert from India he will talk to you.

I listen to uzair and i realize that it’s so important to be in integrity for the world to work.

India have 3 language policy in schools . English ,hindi and the local language .. although in north its misused by north indian bu using Sanskrit as 3rd language .. this policy helps strengthen local languages . Thats one of beauty of Indian democracy

Jab wha ki local language nhi h to Sanskrit hi option h misuse kha hua wha per. Ab wha dusre state ki language kyo lagayenge. Rajasthan,Haryana,Delhi,UP, MP ,Bihar ki konsi language h mere bhai. Sirf boli h bhasha nhi. Ab boli or bhasha ka farak nhi pta to hum kya kre.

Islam is the problem as its not updated and muslim simply look everything through Religion. Science and religion shud go together. See do you see any Muslim country which has grown based on knowledge and research. All developed countries are based on science and research and innovation. Indian religions always support Science and freedom for knowledge for all. thats he reason India developing faster. And finally Our PM Modi and his team which has clear intention for Growth along with Culture which binds people.

The nonchalance in their tone while talking of a common resource market across the Indian subcontinent tells me that they dont realise how serious a threat India sees pakistani extremism as.

If a language has rich literature(poems, novels, movies, drama, books, etc) the language will flourish. In India, there is rich literature in all rigional languages and we youths love to read, understand it. Thats how our rigional languages survive and grow. However in Pakistan, I doubt if the literature is present bcoz all the attension is on false religious agenda. Thats why the languages and culture is degrading I guess.

They deserve credit for sure. But Nehru, Indira, Rajiv under invested in primary education. Hence literacy rate was barely 52% in 1991 after 40 years of Nehru/Gandhi. South Korea without an IIT equivalent performed much better because it focused on primary education and ensuring no one was illiterate. Secondly, the economic policies of Nehru/Gandhi were such that they pushed us to IMF 7 times. They also kept India in a low growth rate. What was derisively called the Hindu rate of growth was in realiry the Nehru/Gandhi. So while they certainly deserve some credit, they have a lot to answer for.

They set up an institution and forgot about maintaining, progressing and uplifting it. Give credit to horrendous economic policies of theirs also.
